I bet that, if you're bombing along on some congested Japanese superhighway:
a. You cover 1km in a hurry
b. You can't really take a second to look at your foot so you make your way
to the next junction to check it out.

Gory but plausible...

I call BullS***.  I look at my leg when I get hit by a shotgun shell

And how do you ride for 1.2 miles after losing a leg and not bleed to death?
