Front sprocket replacement tips?

Take a length of steel pipe, angle iron, or strong wood (2x4 or similar), wrap in in some rags for padding, and then place it through the spokes of the rear wheel, resting on top of the swingarm, perpendicular to the long axis of the bike.

This will hold the wheel in place.  If memory serves, I left the trans in neutral.
