Sounds scary, I really like my .357, but have been thinking about a used .44
for a sidearm during Elk Season.

You familiar with the Sherpa?
If not, it is a pistol grip 12g w/ 12" barrel. about $500. You need to have 
a trust own it, which I have for reasons other than guns.
Only drawback is it's a 3 shot.
Would be perfect for use on a bike.
