From carlp at wetleather.com Sun Jan 15 13:50:49 2017 From: carlp at wetleather.com (Carl Paukstis) Date: Sun, 15 Jan 2017 13:50:49 -0800 Subject: Micapeak change of Spam filtering provider Message-ID: Dear Micapeak e-mail user: For the past several years, we have used a service from (first) MXLogic, acquired by McAfee, acquired by Intel... for filtering Spam and viruses out of our inbound email. The providers of that service have decided to cease operation of it, effective January 17th, 2017. They gave us plenty of notice; we were happy with their service. We are changing today, in the next few hours, to a different service. I hope it will provide a similar level of filtering and Spam rejection, as well as reliability. As you might imagine, our mail setup and traffic configuration doesn't fit the typical mass models; we're not like a business or school with a bunch of employees or students, nor are we a commercial advertising sender, nor really much like a "newsletter" or targeted communications outfit like ConstantContact. So there's not a single tailored-to-order solution for our needs. There are some differences in details, and a lot of features we didn't use anyway are no longer available, but I think it's going to work out well. CHANGES YOU WILL NOTICE: none, I hope. Unless you're in the habit of perusing 2nd-level SMTP headers like me, you might never notice a thing. OUTGOING MAIL IS UNCHANGED. If you send mail FROM micapeak.com, it just isn't related to this change. WORST CASE: Some people will start having their mail to address at micapeak.com (or our other hosted domains) rejected, with anything from no notice at all (silently discarded) to a notice that your sending domain or use is blacklisted, or the mail contains Spam or a virus. Pay attention to the rejection message, check it out, and contact me. If your FIRST attempt to contact me carlp at micapeak.com fails similarly, use one of my two outside, independent mail services listed below. Let's hope that doesn't happen much at all. Cheers, and now just forget about this until & unless you see a problem. -- Carl Paukstis E-mail and mailing list admin for micapeak.com Spokane, Washington, USA http://www.micapeak.com/ postmaster at micapeak.com listmaster at micapeak.com Independent contact ON A SECONDARY, PROBLEM-TRIGGERED FALLBACK ONLY, PLEASE!: carlp at tuffmail.com 2nd outside contact: cpaukstis at gmail.com From marcl at micapeak.com Tue Jan 24 12:48:02 2017 From: marcl at micapeak.com (Marc Lewis) Date: Tue, 24 Jan 2017 12:48:02 -0800 Subject: 2017 micapeak.com pledge drive Message-ID: <201701242048.v0OKm2IJ030829@micapeak.com> Once each year we remind folks how they can send gifts for the upkeep of micapeak.com, which powers this mailing list, assorted Web sites and other services. It's that time! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gifts (in US dollars) can be made in two ways. The PREFERRED WAY is to use PayPal. Log into http://www.paypal.com and click 'Send Money', then put "marcl at micapeak.com" in the "To" box and fill in an amount. Under 'What are you sending money for?', choose "I'm sending money to family or friends" so PayPal will give us the whole amount (instead of taking a small percentage for themselves). We prefer US dollars, but other currencies work too. That's it! The far LESS-desirable method is to send a check in $USD payable to "H M LEWIS" (not "micapeak", the bank doesn't like that) to: H M Lewis 4923 S Bellaire Ln Veradale, WA 99037-8220 USA NOTE: We gave up the PO Box we used to use a couple years ago. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's the request. The providers of that service have decided to cease operation of it, effective January 17th, 2017. They gave us plenty of notice; we were happy with their service. We switched to a different service on January 16th, and it seems to be providing a similar level of filtering and SPAM rejection, as well as reliability. While there was a fair bit of behind-the-scenes work involved, most subscribers apparently didn't notice anything different -- which is exactly what we had in mind. That's the news for 2017. If you're still with me, however, I'll be a tiny bit more verbose about what the Pledge Drive is... The collection of domains (micapeak.com, wetleather.com, FJR1300.info, gpdndg.com, and a dozen other sites), mailing lists and hardware which we collectively call "micapeak" is running well. 2017 marks the 22nd year we've been doing this. So far, so good. :-) We renew our long-standing promise to keep micapeak.com, et al, running and free of charge, no matter what. But if you'd care to throw us a few bucks, we'd be grateful. Carl and I know that some of the folks for whom this mailing list is an important part of daily life would like to show their appreciation with a modest gift. We encourage you to think about how much time you spend each day following this list, or using micapeak's other resources. If it seems worthwhile to you, then please consider sending something. We will continue to operate the mailing lists, micapeak.com and other Websites for the foreseeable future (we even have sections in our wills to make sure the online stuff survives us). There is no obligation for you to send anything, and you'll continue to get the email and Webpages we serve for free. But we'd appreciate it if you'd help out... Thanks in advance! --hmarc & Carl SPECIAL NOTE: Let's not make this a topic of discussion on the mailing list, OK? Send us a gift or don't, as it suits you, but we have neither the time nor the energy to discuss the subject further than what you see above. And we're sure your fellow subscribers would rather not have the list itself cluttered with more than this notice on the subject. Thanks! Message-ID: I've been thinking I'm coming up on 20 years of ownership with my GPZ. It's been a lifetime of adventures that have involved four trips to the Pacific Ocean, including two to Alaska and one across western Canada. There have been many trips around Colorado, a trip to Arkansas and rides with some of the wonderful people I have met on this list in New England and eastern Canada. I'm actually a little sad as I write this, as its become time to sell the GPZ and move on. At 60, I'm not getting taller or stronger and that last trip to Alaska on a big, heavily loaded bike made me think it's time to get something smaller. I looked long and hard at the BMW 800GS, but the seat height along with the top heavy feel made me think twice, and as this may be my last big bike purchase, I want to get it right. Although Kawasaki makes some nice stuff, I'm not over the long distance trips yet, and comfort combined with storage and lighter weight over long distances is an important factor to me. So, with that in mind, I went out today and purchased a very clean, low mileage 2013 BMW 800GT that has all the nice factory accessories already installed, including all three hard bags, an Akrapovic exhaust, the BMW comfort seat and ESA, or Electronic Suspension Adjustment. It is located in Illinois, so it will be a few weeks before I get it to Colorado. All that said, in the coming months I will be working on selling the GPZ and all the spare parts I've put in the basement over the years, and I have a crap load of them though all the body parts are long gone except a scratched up right lower and a dirty but usable front fender. I'll be putting a list up in a few weeks of all my spares, and trying to figure out a price to sell my much loved, but well used, 95 GPZ which has a salvage title thanks to the POS that hit and run me a dozen years or so ago. If I can't sell it at a decent price, I'll keep it and just ride it around when I feel like having some big bike fun. Potentially I will sell it and my WR450 and buy a KLR650 for those off road trips, I certainly saw enough of them on the roads to Alaska. Though the list has mostly gone silent these days, I will be staying on the list for the foreseeable future. And, since my ex has moved to Florida, I have two empty bedrooms should anyone come through Denver and need a place to stay, and I'm always willing to act as a guide if anyone needs one. Time really flies, like a fast black GPZ on Michelins and Castrol oil. ;-) I still have Esmeralda in the garage, but sadly not much riding these last few years. I blame age-related laziness and the Jaguar. Mostly the Jag. I can't see me ever selling her, though. She's been such a large part of my life for so long now and she's worth so little for anyone else. And yeah, the list ebbs and flows. People stay, people go, people come back. It is the way of the world. Beemers are very good bikes, you can't really go wrong with one. I've wanted an GS1200 since I saw The Long Way Round but it hasn't happened yet. Besides, I saw Top Gun first. ;-) / Richie On 2017-01-29 00:41, Charles Scappaticci wrote: > I've been thinking I'm coming up on 20 years of ownership with my GPZ. > It's been a lifetime of adventures that have involved four trips to the > Pacific Ocean, including two to Alaska and one across western Canada. > There have been many trips around Colorado, a trip to Arkansas and rides > with some of the wonderful people I have met on this list in New England > and eastern Canada. With insurance at $750.00/year this kind of pissed off my wife. I'd like another bike a little lighter and a little lower but at 70 the Suzuki may get turned into a cab for my Kubota tractor. I'm finding it too top heavy. And the seat is at the limit of mt 30" inseam. I dumped it in my yard after a ride last year. My Labrador retriever was jumping around in front of me when I came down the hill. I stopped the bike to keep from hitting him. Unfortunately I was stopped over over a rain wash out and neither foot touched the ground. I went over like the guy on the tricycle on "Laugh-in". Fortunately It was soft sand so there was no damage to the bike. Levi (the dog) had the presence of mind to make himself scarce until I cooled down. Guy flew it to Nunavut. Same deal, paying insurance to leave it parked. The boat is my new money vacuum. I had fuel delivery issues on it and Pratt diesel in Carp finally got it sorted out. I can get close to 40 mph out of a 30' boat which is not bad. We were at the Toronto boat show last weekend looking at the 55 footers. Not to buy just to look. Surprisingly many deals wee being signed as people feel wealthy in Toronto with house prices rising 10% a month. It won't end well. Same as in '89 didn't for housing. Oh yeah -- Dec 1st Dan Brideau (VTX Dan) hung himself. Booze and drugs got the better of him. My Suzuki vstrom will probably belong to someone else this spring. I didn't put 500 km (300 miles ) on it last year. Between the move back to Alabama and multiple malfunctions that need to be corrected, the bikes have been idle. I suspect the GPz needs an ignition coil, as the misfire recurs after it warms up and two carburetor cleanings and a tank draining have not corrected the issue. It is very heavy for my 5'4"/27" inseam build, but it's a dream once I'm rolling. If I sell all three bikes, an FZ07 or FZ09 appear to be my happiest choices. Or I go minimalist and get a 390 Duke! All three feel like dirt bikes, which is very comfortable for me. Maybe this year I get all three bikes running and just ride them when I can, since none of them will get me much cash... (micapeak powers this mailing list, Web sites & other services) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gifts (in US dollars) can be made in two ways. For most of you, this note is a familiar reminder. You know what to do, or not do, and you need read no further. NEWS: For the past several years, we have used a service from McAfee for filtering SPAM and viruses out of our inbound email. Thanks!
