Safe water level for freezing overnight?

You're obviously on the right track.  Do yourself a huge favor and don't
take the frozen water idea lightly.  I did, and while the cases didn't
crack (freeze plugs actually work), there are still residual issues even
after flushing my coolant system more than 10 times.
