Painting a gas tank

I picked up a spare gas tank and would like to paint it white with
rattle cans for my next race.

I have been getting good results with Krylon Fusion on the body
panels, but that is meant for plastic.

Any suggestions on a paint brand?

Also, what's the minimum I should do to prep a secondary tank for a
new coat of paint and also for racing? (The tank has the factory
finish on it and is in good shape).
