95%+ of the world doesn't use gmail, nor should anybody wanting to be on a email list be required to do so. Just because gmail is nice enough to automatically include a visual hack to deal with people who don't know how, don't have regard for others, or are just plain too lazy to behave properly, doesn't excuse the offending behavior.

Ctrl-A, DEL. It's that simple. Or quote a couple lines if context is desired.
