Today one of our number had a bot spew out a message on his behalf. No
harm to us as the list software flagged it as suspicious and the
victim (whose good name is being used by the spambot) immediately sent
a warning to avoid opening the message. That message was blocked as
well, but the intent to warn is appreciated.
It is, however a good reminder to continue to use good Internet
hygiene. Be moderately suspicious, avoid opening just any old web page
or file, keep antivirus current and consider using an alternative
email application/OS. (Without getting into the religious wars there
are no 'email' viruses. There are, however about 100,000 outlook
viruses. 50 or so of those can attack other windows email clients,
none are known to attack a Mac or Linux client, although that may
change as current trends mature.) And remember if you get something
your system MAY be compromised; in some cases (thankfully rare) the
only certain cure is to completely erase the drive and reinstall from
scratch.
