My first Beemer! My initial impression after years of riding mostly 400-500cc japanese bikes was it felt different...not necessarily better or worse, just different. More substantial was the phrase I think best describes it.

Neat machine. Lots more inital giddyup than my R75/6. Cleaned up nicely. Could find no mechanical problems during full serviceing, done by me. The tricked out factory engine mods., on this model, are really amazing! ie..Shortened stroke, special cylinders, lightened valve train, big valves, ect...

Photo: Photo-Link
Accessories: BMW panniers 3rd party screen - unknown make - but is effective. Trimmed it with my fine pladed jigsaw!!
Modifications: Changed Speedo head from Km/hr to ML/hr Added bright LED's in indicator lamps as running lights and in tail lamp. (8in each reflector) Low cost mod - e-mail me for further info if you are interested. Added two spotlamps on bars and hazard flashers. Both using the spare accessory sockets - no wiring mods. The hazard flasher mod uses one standard single pole relay and 2 diodes plus a single pole switch. I can send details if anyone is interested a couple of requests to date, so I now have it in a MS Word document. Replaced tyres with Michelin Macadam 50's - this has improved the handling a great deal. Added heated hand grips - pandering to my old age and our cold weather - they sure work well.
Problems: Mirror vibration - still not solved after carb balancing. However I have now replaced the 6mm fron engine spacers with nylon ones (turned them up) and the engine vibes are much improved. Mind you I now suspect that my tacho is out of calibration, so am working on a method to do that job. - Fixed it!! Head bearings were very notchy - replacement transformed the handling. Clutch operation greatly improved by lubricating the tips of the diaphragm spring (after removing swinging arm and gearbox).
Comments:
Bing carbs rebuilt and 2.64 jets fitted - this has improved the performance quite a bit and the fuel consumption has settled at about 55mpg. Despite careful carb balancing with a mercury filled U-tube.

Modifications: Progressive front springs installed by a previous owner, Progressive rear spring/shock assemblies by me. I am presently repairing and fitting a sport fairing from an "84 Suzuki GS400 which suits the bike better than any other I have seen.
Problems: None
Comments:
This bike is pristine in appearance and runs exceptionally well. I have met two of the three previous owners who really looked after it. The third owner dropped it necessitating replacement of the tank, fender, a valve cover and instruments. This was done well by Shail and the bike shows no residual effects, although I was initially suspicious. I was looking for a re entry machine after a 20 year "lay off" and planned to move up to an R100 but this one's got me hooked for a long time!

Stainless pipes into stainless Norton Comando reverse-cone straight-thru megaphones. You gotta see it before making judgment.
Comments:
I chose the R65 as my project bike because of the quicker handeling short wheelbase and quicker reving shorter stroke. I also wanted cast wheels and electronic ignition. This bike is, for me, an ideal sport bike. An attention getter for cruising and yet light and agile when canyon carving. E-mail me for pics.

Comments:
I purchased this bike for $3100 from a Second party who had recieved it from the original owner in Southern California. The bike was stored in a garage for 20 years and was last registered in 1980 ! After an oil change, front brake rebuild, gas tank flushing and carb cleaning it completed it's trip home of 400 miles with no problems except a minor fork seal leak and a tad of grease splash from the rear end seal. The seller had offered it for bid on EBAY and had recieved no bids! Boy did they miss out!
