I am also having problems with my carbs. I have one the the float sticks and gas leaks out the over flow.
Comments:
If anyone has got any ideas that could help me please let me know. I am also looking for a used tank that is in good shape. Any info about this would help.

Bikes Owned: 6
Accessories: Krauser bags, fork gaiters, BMW voltmeter and clock, Reynolds center stand, Brown side stand, and engine protection guards.
Modifications: Replaced mufflers with stainless steel aftermarket replicas. Installed Boyer Bransden electronic ignition, Koni shocks, Progressive Suspension fork springs.
Problems: Rear transmission seal lets driveshaft oil leak into transmission. Seal probably deteriorated due to long storage period prior to my purchase. Clutch grabby. Possibly due to oil leakage from bad transmission seals. One carburettor diaphragm was torn when bike was purchased. Did full carb rebuild using Bing rebuild kit including new slides and needles. Just completed (Jan 1999) installing new clutch plate, pressure plate, and clutch spring (probably wasn't necessary, but as long as I had it apart ... Also replaced the transmission output shaft oil seal. Haven't yet had a chance to roadtest extensively, to determine whether or not this solves the disappearing drive shaft oil problem. Also installed new steering head bearings. The steering head had been overtightened somewhere along the way, so wanted to start with a clean slate. Rebuilt the forks: new seals, "O" rings and Progressive Suspension fork springs.

Accessories: I would love to put a fairing (cafe style), any sellers out there? It also has a rack and touring bags
Problems: Front end tends to vibrate annoyingly, anyone else have this trouble? The VIN falls between the numbers associated with both the 1980 and the 1981 production years. The tach claims electronic ignition but the ignition has points???
Comments:
I also live in Canada for part of the year (Montreal).

Experience: 29 years street riding, with some periods w/o a bike
Bikes Owned: 8
Accessories: Luggage rack, handlebar muffs (for Winter) sport fairing, extra tool box, bates hard bags(not mounterd yet)
Problems: I suspect my diode board is not grounding completely, as the red light glows at rpms of 1000 or less. Fuel milage at about 35mpg is not good, but this is a lot of short trips. I would expect to get about 50 on the road at moderate (70-75) speeds, but time will tell.
Comments:
This is my first BMW and I found it rather clumsy and crude,engine-wise at first. After a few months, though, I suppose I have acclimated and enjoy it greatly. The quality of the engineering is remarkable, and sometimes overdone, such as the twist grip operation, which has the advantage of putting a straight pull on the throttle cable, though at the cost of the complexity of the pinion gear mechanism. The quality of hte paint is outstanding, still looking like new after 17 yerars, except where nicked, scratched or dented. Although BMW does not caarry any touch up paint, I have found that DupliColor Truck and Van Bahamas Blue is a near perfect match, whether sprayed or applied with an artist's brush to nicks. When rubbed out it is indistingushable. However it is not as practical for daily commuting as is my 75 Honda 400F, which is much smaller, lighter and probably quicker. However the greater physical size of the BMW does give better comfort even though I am of pretty average size. I will used it also to go on 125 mile trips to my vacation home in Delaware, which I have not done on the Honda.

Experience: 4 years street riding
Bikes Owned: 2
Accessories: BMW hard bags
Modifications: Progressive rear shocks, stainless braided front brake line, ferodo brake pads. front lowered by approximately 1/2" to match progressive rear shock length.
Problems: Suspension was too soft with stock shocks. Replacement with Progressive shocks made ride firmer and more secure-feeling. Front braking was too soft--15-year-old rubber brake line. Braided stainless replacement made front brake feel crisper.
Comments:
I really like this bike as a general purpose all- rounder, especially with hard cases. It's easy and fun to ride, it handles pretty well on back road curves, haven't had any mechanical problems. But it's a little light at 407 lbs. dry for long distance highway work.

Comments:
Bike was purchased new by the previous owner. She put 6,000 miles on it and and parked in the garage in 1984, where it rested till I came along in 1994. I bought it setting in the garage uncranked (yes, I stole it!). I changed all the fluids bought new tires and a battery, blew out the idle jets and it fired and settled into a nice idle on the first try!! I rode it to the gas station and back, and with 2.7 test miles on it I left on a 2,000 mile trip (don't try this on a Norton).

Problems: Electronic Ignition Trigger Unit: At 40k miles, the magnet on the Hall Effects sensor fell off and mangled up the metal revolving "cup" that it spins arounds. Letting my local electronics guru give it a try, otherwise new part costs $330 US or $175 rebuilt.
