THE BMW R1200GS

The 2004-?? R1200GS

R1200GS January 2004 in South Africa, BMW had presented a completly new GS oilhead, the R1200GS. The main changes regarding the R1150GS are:
  • the weight!!! that new bike is around 30kg lighter!
  • new engine (lighter, bigger, with equilibration weight,...) with sophisticated electronics;
  • new gearbox with helical gearing (that seems to be "the softest bike gearbox ever made");
  • new frame;
  • cast alloy wheels (spoked ones are optional);
  • smaller tank;
  • a paralever swingarm with parallelogram bar in upper position;
  • and off course, the dress.
Here the official presentation text:

The new R 1200 GS - The fascination of freedom.
25 years ago BMW Motorrad founded the travel enduro segment and has been its clear leader ever since. Now it's time to set new standards again - with the BMW R 1200 GS. This motorbike continues the tradition of being the truly ideal on and off-road bike. At the same time it launches a completely new era of dynamic performance. The BMW R 1200 GS differs considerably from the previous model: weight has been reduced by a tangible 12% and engine output has been increased by 15%. Combined with numerous new features such as the new BMS-K engine electronics, Single Wire System and Info Flatscreen it will easily become the best BMW travel enduro of all time, just as it will easily reach the very remotest corners of the earth. It's precisely controlled power output makes it shine off-road. On-road, its agility will take your breath away. Experience freedom with no compromises - on a test ride.
