Suction values

If you remove the Clean Air gubbins you need to block off all the hoses,
carbs, air box and cylinder head.

 Would it work to just place a plug in the tops of the suction values
in place of the hoses to block it off? Could you just leave them open
or would they leak exhaust at some point?
