I have heard of the hairdryer trick as well.

One more question... Was there any indication after that the adhesive
decal had been there... different paint fading or ...?

I have successfully removed the Swiss Motorway sticker with a hair
dryer. Takes some patience and good will ;)
Getting the rests of the glue off might take some fuel or WD40.
