Drew,

I had that exact same symptom and it puzzled the hell out of me for a
while. A 'knock' from the driveline that could be felt through the left
footpeg (excessively).

Turned out just to be time for a new chain. The time served had stretched
it enough that it was kinking on the hard turn around the countershaft
sprocket, or just stretched enough that it wasn't meshing perfectly on that
hard turn. Cleaning and lubing didn't fix it, but a change of chain and
sprockets cured it immediately.
