Sticking carb slide.

Hey Randy,
It could also be a "lazy diaphragm". Over time the rubber can absorb solvent
from the fuel and swell, in effect making it oversized and flabby. This can
cause it to react differently than as designed. Pull the offending slide and
(at least) one of the others and compare them very closely. The size and
shape of the rubber should look exactly the same on both. If one looks more
flabby, even a little bit, you may have a swollen diaphragm.
Cure - Send your wife shopping, then set the oven for 225ºF. Place the
flabby diaphragm/slide in the oven for 15 minutes, then 10 additional
minutes at a time until the solvent has been driven from the rubber and it
is back to the same shape as the other three.
I had this happen to me once on an '87 Magna. Couldn't get it to run right
off idle. When I pulled the airbox and blipped the throttle, three of the
slides moved in concert, the fourth one was lazy, barely moving. The oven
method cured it and it ran like a raped ape afterwards.
------------------------------------------------------------
Note for future reference: you can also "add" solvent to a diaphragm that
has shrunken over the years and will no longer fit in the grove of the
vacuum chamber. I do this by spraying the rubber with Berryman's carb and
throttle body cleaner just enough to swell it back up to original size.
Works great.

Hi Randy.
Have you checked the diaphragm for damage? My understanding is that the
slides are vacuum-actuated and the diaphragm must be in tact and have a good
seal for this to happen.
Thanks.

Hi Guys,
I would be grateful for your advice on a problem I am having while doing my
yearly spring tune-up.
When I restarted the bike after checking valves and changing plugs, and was
hooking up my carb-balancer I noticed that on blipping the throttle three
carb slides were not moving.
I pulled all the slides (carbs in place; I had totally dismantled and
cleaned them less than 2000 miles ago) cleaned with lacquer thinner,
replaced them and fired up.
All started moving except no. 4 carb.
I have pulled that sucker maybe 10 times cleaned, sprayed WD 40, removed WD
40 rubbed the hell out of it with lacquer thinner and still the freaker
won't move. Pushing it up with a screwdriver through the throat it slides
up easily and falls back down smoothly. The resistance registers no
discernible difference compared to the others.
I don't want to use any abrasive, even the finest paper since these slides
are plastic.
Any advice?
Thanks
Randy from New Orleans
