Reminds me of long ago in the late 50's.... I was riding pillion on my
friends 500cc Royal Enfield Bullet when a car driver tossed his still lit
cigarette butt out of the car window (very affected... butt between the
first two fingers and with a flick of the wrist). It hit my friend in the
chest with a shower of sparks and stuck there on his jacket. 

 

F#!k1ng Custard (or words to that effect) was what I heard and then the bike
speeded up until level with the care and my friend tossed the butt back into
the car and I had the pleasure of seeing the driver doing all kinds of
threshing machine maneuvers trying to catch the lighted butt... Aaahhh
wonderful memories..... 

 

And much later on I was in Canada in a parking lot near a busy intersection
and there was a big guy in a panel truck drinking beer from cans and tossing
the cans out of the window onto the grass and he was obviously much the
worse for wear. There were about 6 cans already on the grass. 

 

I remonstrated with him about the litter and he came back with [Mind your
own f...ing business. F...k off or I'll punch your f...king lights out.

 

Usually, I have a very long fuse, but the tenor of his reply had the effect
of pulling the pin out of my mental hand grenade. I bent down and picked up
a can, which surprisingly was about 1/3 full. I let it go as hard as I could
at his head and he just moved enough for it to whistle past his left ear and
then I all I could hear was the can ricocheting around the inside of the
van.

 

Mr. Van-Can was ½ way out of the van to make good on his threat and I’m
thinking, Oh F#!k, I’m in for it now. Suddenly, something seemed to pierce
his alcoholic fog and he must have come to realize that a charge of
littering was going to be the least of his worries. He got back into the van
and roared off. 

 

I collected his beer cans and dumped them in the nearby trash can and I must
confess that my heart was thumping and my legs a bit wobbly at the thought
of my near escape.
