Problems: Just bought the bike and it appears the tires need replacing - the rear is quite flat in middle. Anyone tried Pirelli Diablo Stadas or Avon Storm ST's? Also, any tips for adjusting the suspension? Twisting the knobs a half turn at a time doesn't seem too scientific - I'm not much interested in the "error" part of trial and error. Ohlins must be crazy expensive - are they worth it?

Accessories: The bike came with an additional Ztechnic titanium exhaust (off the bike) that I will be installing to see how it sounds. I like the sound of stock exhaust, so I don't think I will necessarily like the change.
Modifications: Bike came with fender eliminated, and rear turn signals replaced with short stalk ones. Actually looks pretty sharp.
Comments:
Having owned many sport bike v-twins including 01 SV650, 03 SV1000, 02 Superhawk, and many inline 4's including 03 CB750, 01 katana, 02 F4i, 03 R1, 04 1000RR, I am enjoying this bike very much. There are some characteristics that is unlike other bikes I have owned, like the slight rocking to the right when you blip the throttle, the shaking of the engine at idle, etc.... but overall I am very pleased by the workmanship and condition of this bike, the only sportbike that BMW offered in its line up in 02. I bought the bike with 9800 miles on it on 5-9-07, and changed the oil/filter, transmission and final drive fluids on 5-13-07 just for my own peace of mind, and the bike is ready to go anywhere. It has plenty of power for my purposes, even though it doesn't come anywhere close to the R1 or the 1000RR that I owned and loved.

Comments:
Love this bike. It's very suitable for everyday use, looks good, fast enough, different. The minor flaws it has, I call it 'character'. For me a smooth, perfect bike would become boring within a few weeks. I'm not really interested in weight/horspower ratios, maximum leaning angles, 101 suspension settings a.s.o.: most bikes outperform their riders, so you shouldn't worry too much about that. Not before you start draggin footpegs. I wanted a twin cilinder, reliable, no-chain drive bike, which handled well on secundary roads while still being able to travel a long distance and take some luggage. The 'S' does all that, and it does so very well! Took it to the track and it performed well. Sold it in 2007, 135000 km's, €2750,-

It came with ABS, Heated grips, Clear turn signals, Touring suspension, Raised (touring) handle bars, Accessory plug, Black engine, Wide (5.5") rear wheel, Centre Stand. Corbin saddle with smuggler. Rear CF hugger. MRA carbon-look windshield. Stealth license plate bracket from R1100SGoodies.
Modifications: I added some custom decal work to break up all the blue paint. I modelled this after the boxer cup bikes. For looks, added a rear wheel BMW logo plug (fills that whole in the centre of the rear rim, and adds a touch of class) and BMW valve stem caps.
Problems: None to date.
Comments:
This bike always gets looks and comments, particularly the shaft drive and single-sided swingarm.

Modifications: Dealer installed Vanderlinde Exhaust and ECU chip. This upgrade realy makes my bike behave at low RPM. Got rid of the surging. Not to mention the sweet sound that really turns heads!
Problems: I too have suffered the broken Lic Plate bracket thingy. I did install 4 screw this time as I feel the plate breaks because of the lack of plate support. Finally removed the rear plate and made a new replacement. Run Synthetic oil and have switched back to standard oil. DO NOT run synthetic in BMW Oil Head engines. Rear main seal cant hold the thin synthetic blend!Synthetic oil has started to seep from everywhere! Bike only gets better with age! OEM shocks finally crapped out. Bought used replacments off of Ebay. Tore down winter of 04/05. Rear main Seals (2) leaking, probably the synthetic oil I ran for a while. transmission splined shaft seal leaking BAD. Replaced and relined clutch locally. Pretty impressive engineering I must say, whole job took me 4-5 hours to complete. Be carfull and pay close attention to rear swing arm needle bearings. Mine were toast, seems the GS guys say they only last 40-60K and they are right! Make sure slines are properly serviced/ lubricated as well! Not as reliable as the old airheads, but I still love her anyway!
Comments:
Of the 3 BMW I have owned... Man this has been the best!(In addition to my R1100S) My next one will be a R1100RT due to the fact that my wife wants to ride too! Real crowd pleaser, even people that don't like bikes comment on this one! Best purchase I have ever made. Big improvement in handling after tossing the Dunlop D205 tires. Man they were horrible! M1 Sport-Tecs made a Big Improvement. Like a new bike! 18K service life with the M1's in the front, 7-9K with the rear.

Modifications: Don't need a Fuel Nanny! (See comments)
Problems: The front wings of the Corbin seat are slowly grinding the paint away due to a poor fit. Still! Replaced dead battery with gel-cel type abt 50-60,000 kms. The bike stopped at 80,000kms - dead! Turned out to be a duff hall effect sensor. Only $500 to have repaired ... sigh. Tyres - put on pair of Viper Venoms abt 85,000kms - great tyre! However, picked up a nail in the rear after some 6000 kms and had to replace with a new tyre ($270 - ouch !) Tyre still had manufacturing dags not worn away. Memo to self: avoid gutter crawling at traffic lights. Clutch push-rod actuator failed at about 100,000kms on the way to Procycles (bikeshop) for repair. Waited 3hrs for pickup van on hot summers day. More sighs. Paint (?) corrosion on lower front forks slowly getting worse - been like this for over 80,000 kms. (Why ?) Put the old seat back on as Corbin wrecking paintwork. God it hurts the crown jewels ! Had rear Paralever bearing replaced TWICE (once at 70k and then at 90k). Slackness at torquing by the bikeshop ?? Rear wheel bearing now has 1-2mm slop/play (107,000kms). Going to bikeshop for opinion today. Expect to need replacement anytime soon.
Comments:
After about 50,000 kms, all surging appeard to stop and it's now a "different bike". Amazing. Still uses oil at an alarming rate if revs kept high (~4k - 5k) Still using Dino oil though. Still goes like rocket at 107,000 kms (67,000 miles) although I expect front & rear shocks must be buggered by now !

Accessories: BMW paniers. Heated grips (after market). Radar detector
Modifications: Extended front mudguard. Acrylic headlamp protector. Cigarette lighter power point for Passport 8500 radar detector (still have my license). Remus exhaust system.
Problems: Loss of seat cowl fastener. There must be a better way / fastener to secure this item. Speedo wobble was eventually found to be a poor contact in right, rear wiring loom. Rattling cat recently by-passed with Remus system.
Comments:
Purchased the bike after 10 years of having a Moto Guzzi Le Mans mk 5. How technology has moved on! I had considered buying another Guzzi but the r1100s seemed far superior in every way. The r1100s looks and goes like no other BMW. The engineering and components are a joy to behold after having an Italian bike for so long. The riding technique requires more leverage on the handlebars than the Guzzi but exudes confidence without drama and is far smoother and forgiving. Even though I will miss my Guzzi and its quirks, I feel I have finally moved into the 21st century and so far have no regrets. The rear wheel needs a hugger as the underside of the seat and some of the wiring are readily caked in water and dirt. The engine is enormously flexible but the transmission is occasionally clunky (albeit not as much as the Guzzi). It is deceptively fast and unfortunately have lost my license twice for accummulated speeding tickets. At lower rpm there is the familiar surging as I see other owners experience but this is a minor complaint. New Remus exhaust system sounds & looks great, eliminates the cat, must weigh several pounds lighter and gives the impression of a freer reving engine. I am finding the MEZ4 tyres skittish and would like recommendations for a stickier street tyre. Now have Metzler Roadtec Z6 which are much better tyres.
For Sale: Just had 60K service with no problems (59245Kms). In excellent condition. Selling as have purchased a R1200S but will be sad to see her go. Absolute reliability and meticulously maintained. Asking price NZ$11000. A bargain.
