Comments:
2/6/97 - I have had the bike on the road for only a couple of weeks and really haven't had too much of a chance to put in any long rides. It is great fun to ride however. 1st to 2nd gear change could be better. 21/12/97. Bad day today. Dropped the bike while riding with some friends. We had just completed the Black Spur here in Melbourne on our way to Marysville when I lost concentration and didn't make a sweeping right hander. Oh well! broken left ankle with ligament damage will keep me off the bike for about 3 months. That should be enough time to get it fixed. Looking forwards to getting back onboard though..... 14/3/98. Back on the road again after almost 3 months. Bike seems fine.

Problems: Before purchasing my vtr, I spent a great deal of time reading this registry.I believe that anyone with a vtr knows all about the mushy suspention and the anoying backfiring through the carbs.Other than that,no real problems.
Comments:
my last bike was a `79 kz 1000mkII with a high compretion big bore kit, cam`s,pipe, monster rear sprocket, bigger better carbs and about three years worth of tuning. After that bike, and all that I read about the monster torque of the vtr, I must say that I was a little dissapointed, although I must remember that my kz would only go about 125, but you could barely hang on to get there. I have only had the vtr for a couple of weeks and I just ordered the jet kit and filter today and will pick out a pipe by time they get in, I understand that this will not only help with the backfire problem but will also give the bike a serious wake up call.I love the lightweight feel of the v-twin and the power is verey smooth. If anyone has carb setting tips for florida climate they would be greatly appreciated "Update 4-30-00" Now that I have had a chance to put on some miles, I have a different opinion of the vtr. A friend if mine who also owns a 98 vtr reminded me that this is a v-twin, not an in-line 4. I have found out that searching for power way down in the rev's yealds a whole lot of torque.I am verry pleased to report that I now know why everyone calls this bike a wheelie monster. I haven't mastered the second gear airborne transition yet but I have been practicing every day.I have the pipe and jet kit but have not installed them.

Goodridge steel braided brake lines. 4 degree ignition advancer. 16-tooth Renthal drive sprocket. Speed Bleeders. Michelin Pilot Sport front and rear.
Problems: Small coolant leak; seems to have self-corrected. 6/29 Nailed for doing 125 in Placerville, CA!!! God damn CHP planes!!! Mandatory court appearance and all!!! Wish me luck! Ticket update: Got off light, $170 fine and 10-day restriction, a walk in the park! Never underestimate the power of a good lie!
Comments:
I'm so glad they didn't have any VFR's at the dealer. So I can only get 130 miles out of a tank, so what! The fun factor kicks ass! Going to add a couple more bikes to the stable though. BMW K1200RS for distance, and the new CBR929RR for a 4-cylinder screamer. Anyone know where I can get a '69 CB750?
For Sale: Stock exhaust cans in excellent shape (700 miles on them), go for $700 new, asking $400. Update: I still have 'em and I'll let 'em go for $300 plus shipping costs.

Accessories: Shoei RF-900, Joe Rocket Phoenix, Fieldsheer Diablos, First Gear Kenya.
Modifications: Jardine Polished Aluminium High Mounts (Awesome Sound!), trimmed rear fender, flush mount signals front & rear.
Problems: When riding, I can't hear anything but my new Jardine High Mounts. But seriously, does the headlight on the Superhawk suck or what? My last bike was a 99 CBR1100XX, and I could see for miles. The Superhawk seems to be lacking in the headlight department. I've installed a 90/100W Xenon bulb, maybe this will help...or maybe it will only help melt my wiring harness?
Comments:
I'm looking to buy a K&N air filter, Jet kit, maybe a corbin seat if anyone is looking to sell.
For Sale: FOR SALE: 4/17/04 MY BIKE...I know, I don't want to but I have to. Accessories: Indigo Sports full exhaust system, Factory jet kit K&N filter, Factory 4 degree ignition advancer, Fastline brake and clutch lines, Scotts steering damper, Sharkskins lower , carbon rear hugger, Zero Gravity double-bubble windshield, Buell rear turn signals, Lockhart front turn signals
Modifications: Trimmed rear fender(no-brainer there!) I know, I know, "whats he doing with Buell signals!?", but the smaller units really clean up the rear and look better than cheapy aftermarket ones, the Lockhart flush-mounts look great in the front. If you're taller than 4'5, get a Zero Gravity windshield, it makes longer rides alot more comfortable without sacrificing wind flow to the rider. The Indigo Sports exhaust system with dual canisters on one side and the Sharkskins lower give the bike a sportier look. Installed power port under seat for cell phone.
Problems: None to date, outside of little time to ride
Comments:
I've reached a crossroad, do I continue modifications, or wait until September to see if there really is a hotter version coming down the mountain? Decisions, Decisions Well by now we all know the answer to that question! I have since sold this VTR and have an RC51! So the saga continues on the RC51 registry
For Sale: 1998 VTR1000 stock exhaust canisters $200.00

Problems: None (Rearviews BITE)
Comments:
Gotten used to the sucky rearviews. The bike is feelin broken in. We need more Mountain roads down here...guess I'll have to plan on vacations in Colorado this summer. No problems to date, a little oil overflow through the crancase ventilation. Don't particularly like putting 90 weight oil on the chain every 500 miles. Driving the speed limits is just about beyond capabilities. I love this machine! This baby runs circles around sn 02275 and looks beau coup better doin it! "I CAN'T DRIVE 55"

Red 1998 VTR1000F (Updated: 2003.1.30)

Owner: Dave Gustafson

Location: USA (California) -- Carlsbad, CA
Experience: 31 years riding, AFM club racing
Bikes Owned: 7
Accessories: Shark Skinz lower fairing, Two Bros. pipes, K&N air filters, Dynojet Stage One jetting, Heli bars, Scotts dampener, kevlar brake and clutch lines, BRC brake pads, Corbin leather seat, Carbon fiber fender/chain guard, mirror extenders, tinted and extended wind fairing, second look tank bra, tour master tank bag, billet brake reservoir cover
Modifications: Airbox mod, fender eliminator, flush turn signals, smog equipment removed, smog plugs installed, rear third brake light “bar”. Two Bros Racing pipes were TOO loud for me. I fabricated quarter inch thick aluminum plates, beveled the edges, machined a hole in each for one and one eight inch dia. tubing. Cut tubing to 3 inches lengths and pressed into plate with only one half inch protruding from outside face. Lightly hammer the plate assembly into rear exhaust openings and you’re good to go. Cheap and easy!
Problems: Speedo was off about 15%. Installed Hall Effect black box and used bicycle speedo to calibrate. Original owner had water pump seal replaced at 500 miles.
Comments:
Best motorcycle I've ever owned! Agile, tons of torque, awesome power wheelies in several gears - too much fun. What's with the loud clunks during shifting?

Comments:
I love riding it. i love passing a trooper doing 100+ miles an hour and taking off. Did my first wheelie last weekend. (by accident) some dude wanted to race me in a modified pick-up. needless to say, i was doing 100 mph within 7 seconds.

1st impressions are the huge amount of torque available right accross the rev band. I'm not too sure about the fuel consumption but I've heard some gas guzzling stories. I would appreciate some advice on how to get more miles from a tank.

Comments:
Here in NYC there are potholes that could total this bike. Its so easy to flick it around anything, though- not a problem. Took it NYC to South Carolina in a day (14 hours on the road)- real comfortable for a sport bike.
