Location: Australia (Eastern) -- Brisbane
Experience: Grew up with my father's 7 Triumphs, rode some trail at 12 then picked it up again turning 22 and have now been riding for 6 years (2007).
Bikes Owned: 2
Photo: Photo-Link
Accessories: Tank bag, Oxford Panniers (Great!)
Modifications: None, stock as it gets.
Problems: Fixed the famous 2nd gear (AUD$1000), spends a battery a year and wears tyres fairly quickly. Some valve ticking which is normal for this bike as long as valve clearences are adjusted.
Comments:
In amazing condition. No one believes it's an '85; the paint job still gleams in the sun! I have used it every day since I bought it and use it for commuting, camping and touring. The missus likes the wide seat and we frequently pack the tent and bedrolls on the back with the panniers. Sports tourer of the decade! (80s)

Experience: 9 years, 80,000 miles
Bikes Owned: 5
Accessories: Givi hard luggage - E52 trunk and E42 saddlebags; Rear shock protector; Front fender extender; Corbin Gunfighter & Lady seat;
Modifications: D & D 4 into 1 full system; Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit; K & N clamp-on filters; Lindemann Engineering modified forks; 18-38 sprockets; Odyssey Drycell battery; aftermarket mirrors; RK XW chain; Scottoiler chain oiler with HCR; Technoflex rear shock; R1/R6 front calipers; PFM front brake discs; braided steel brake lines; Dynatek 2000 programmable ignition; Dynatek 2.2 ohm coils; Dynatek DW-800 plug wires; NGK Iridium spark plugs; custom wiring from battery to ignition system (lower resistance than stock); Electrical Connection headlight relay kit, power accessory bus, and ground kit; Fiamm's horn with relay; Candlepower 100/55 headlight; Barnett 6 spring clutch mod and Barnett clutch plates.
Problems: After putting bike on dyno (G-Force in Santa Clara), found that it was very lean down low and up high. G-Force recommended that I move the needle up one notch, turn the mixture srews out 1/2 turn and go up two sizes on the main jets. I backed the mixture screw out, which helped, but when I went to remove the cap to gain access to the needles, the top of the first screw I tried to turn nearly got stripped trying to crack it, so I think I'm going to get some steel screws of the correct size before removing the old screws, and I don't want to not be able to get the carbs back together - I'd be screwed! Scottoiler had leak in HCR, but when I told Scottoiler they sent me a replacement HCR at no charge. Stock FJ master cylinder with R1/R6 calipers is a little weak, but still far superior to stock calipers. I just got an EX500 master cylinder, which is 14 mm bore, that I'm going to install that is supposed to fix the problem. Mirrors and fairing buzz something fierce. Givi luggage mounts to rear passender pegs, which is the same as the D & D mounting point. I had to make a new bracket so the pipe could mount to the stock exhaust mount (which is better anyway because it is a different part of the frame than the footpegs are mounted to and it is rubber-mounted).
Comments:
The ignition upgrades and replacement of the V/H with a D & D I recently performed have made a huge difference in the bike's performance. Not to mention that I no longer have to remove with exhaust system to do oil changes, which is probably the best thing I've done to the bike yet. In fact, I don't have to remove anything at all to drain the oil! Of course, filter removal is another issue... It took ten years to finally come out with a bike that is probably a better sport-tourer than this one (that being the ZZR-1200). But the FJ still offers the greatest value of just about any bike on the market. I highly recommend joining the FJ Owners Club and the Yahoo! group yamahafj. You can find them at http://www.fjoc.com and http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamahafj/. I'm planning keeping this bike to 100,000 miles and then upgrading to whatever the best brand-new sport-touring bike on the market is, which will definitely be something that is fuel injected.

Everything I have read about this awesome bike appears to ring true. This things pulls like their is no tomorrow. After not having ridden for over 20 years, I bought the bike and took an 800 mile road trip over two days to get her home. Couldn't have picked a better machine. People are still impressed 20 years later.
For Sale: I don't think so..........

Modifications: Corbin Gunfighter/Lady with backrest, MRA VarioTouringScreen, heated grips w variable control, stainless hex head fastener conversion, K&N filter in stock airbox, 18/38 sprocket conversion, Givi integrated rear signals, RK gold X-ring chain....
Problems: finding time to ride, and insurance in BC is based on displacement (not risk) so it's really expensive to insure here. That and it's hard to resist the temptation to upgrade suspension, power etc...
Comments:
A rare blend of power, comfort, stability and nimble handling. Great all around bike. Easy to work on, too - I love a bike that's accessable enough to let you adjust valves, synch carbs, change plugs etc.... by just pulling the tank with 2 bolts.
For Sale: The insurance is killing me - I would consider a trade for a smaller displacement bike similarly well set up for sport touring - VFR, YZF600R, FZ1 or ???, happy to email pics to any interested parties or entertain suggestions.
