Silky White/Silver 1989 FJ1200 3CV (Updated: 2004.5.31)

Location: UK -- Fife, Scotland
Experience: Nearly 40 years of riding, Scrambles Sidecars, Enduro, Road
Bikes Owned: 50 plus
Accessories: None required, Mr Yamaha did it right!
Modifications: None as yet, but may consider extra lighting up front later if I keep the FJ, as it gets dark up here!
Problems: Bought stolen and recovered but unstarted! Alarm kept the bike so safe that I couldn't start it, but my AutoSpark sorted it out! He binned the Alarm as it went haywire and had a mind of its own! I'm busy fitting new tyres and fork springs (OE) as they were sagged, and a new rear disc, and have replaced the seat cover and locks, and the crook-damaged seat hump and side panels. All match nicely, and bought from E Bay sellers. BUT why do the bars need raising to make it comfy? I'm six foot tall and my wrists ache after 150 miles or so.
Comments:
Fabulous, comfy (except for the bars) and superbly reliable fast, fast tourer but oh! so! heavy! Will blow away big BMW's for speed, comfort, all day riding ability and lower costs in insurance, spares and fuel. Such a good bike I'm surprised that there are not more left standard. My only regret is that through my off road years I've got myself a dodgy right knee and manouvering in and out of the garage and in traffic is becoming a pain. I'll persevere for another month or so of the summer and if things don't improve I will reluctantly have to consider selling for something lighter. Or fit a sidecar?? And I know what you're saying "Too old, get a car" I have one but the bike is for fun!
For Sale: Possible sale, at around £1200, or consider exchange for something with a taller riding position and less weight! The FJ has all old MOT certificates, will have brand new tyres fitted, new rear disc, new un-sat-on seat cover and OE fork springs. OR does anyone have a top yoke conversion to take 'normal' bars clamps, or bar raisers to take the standard FJ clip ons?

Problems: Bought it 3 days ago with leaking fork seals and limited disc brake pads so handling and brakes are putrid. Rode it from Worcester in the Cape to Mossel Bay with no further problems.
Comments:
My 1 WJ elsewhere on this site handles like a dream. This one seems heavy, but will rectify in time. Will be fitting a 160 Michelin rear this afternoon which will also improve matters. Have already repainted the engine gloss black, removed unsightly stickers and need to remove original pipe and fit 4 into 1. Overall this bike compares very well with my 1 WJ that is being repaired and will live up to the legendary repute as is expected of these stunning bikes.

Comments:
An excellent bike to ride and enjoy. Can handle any type of riding, whether scratching footpegs in mountain passes, on a highway at 180km/h, in town at 60km/h. Had a slight collision on the 14/3/04 into a cliff face, but nothing serious. Just bought another 87 FJ1200 to tide me over while mine is being doctored.

Location: USA (NorthWest) -- Portland Oregon
Experience: 32
Bikes Owned: 6
Accessories: MotoLights Corbin Gunfigher/Lady.
Modifications: Dynojet, K&N,V&H SS2R, SuperBrace, Progressive Springs, Belray 10wt, Penske 8987 shock, EBC pads, 1 smaller on the countershaft.
Problems: Fairing a little buzy. Gas tank sings a bit after stopping when really hot, but never a problem.
Comments:
Brought new in May 95 with 50 miles after a 30 mile test ride from Boulder Yamaha (Colorado). Really hard to find any fault with the J, especially after the modifications. Originally felt very heavy (to be expected since my previous bike was a Daytona Special) but dropping the stock exhaust and the Penske fixes most of that. Is confortable 2up (80 - 90% of our riding) in a sport touring mode and capable of "running pretty good" when pushed a bit. At least that's what the others say when we take a brake, just normal to us...
For Sale: Not Likely.

I had sold this bike a few years ago because I needed the money but was recently able to buy it back. This bike is in cherry condtion and has never been down. It will not be for sale again. There is nothing like pinning the throttle in 2nd gear on this machine and feeling my eyeballs sink into their sockets about a half inch from the G-force. Man, life is good. Everyone should have a FJ1200. Rock on!
