Starting to leak (from cam cover gasket, I hope) and burn (rings? valves?) a bit here and there. Tank paint beneath tank bag starting to peel/scuff. Haven't quite got the handling dialed in how I like it.
Comments:
The phrase "Grace, Space, and Pace" was coined for Jaguar, but it applies to our beloved FJ as well. In 1984, I sat on a friend's dad's brand-new FJ1100 and thought, "Some day, I'll have one." In 1990 I bought a leftover Midnight Blue Metallic '89 FJ12 as my first-ever new vehicle and rode it 10,000 miles in a year. This bike was stolen in autumn '91 (keep an eye out for serial # 1241!) The same friend's dad who used to own the '84 now owned an '89, white/silver/red, and was selling it with low (1,600) mileage. How ironic! Over 60,000 miles later, and I've enjoyed it immensely. I've done a track day on it, I rode it 1,000 miles the following day to go to a party, and then I rode it another 1,000 miles to come home at the end of the weekend. It does a good job in the twisties, allowing me to keep up respectably with a friend on a new YZF-1000, even though his girlfriend was with me on the FJ. I take my six-year-old son to school, run errands, sport-ride in the mountains or cruise into town (solo, or sometimes with a date.) This is one bike that can do ANYTHING pretty well (as long as you stick to pavement) and it does some things (sport-tour) wonderfully. I'll ALWAYS have this motorcycle.

Problems: new fuel valve, fuel gauge needle over-the-top (needs pin), missing some dash lights, new battery, new choke cable, new seat cover, back 1/2 of front fender needs 3 of the four mounting holes repaired
Comments:
The FJ is my first "sportbike," tho thank god the insurance industry classifies it as a "sport-tourer." There used to be any number of new motorcycles I lusted after - now there are maybe two; the FJ is that good! Update: one of the two is the 1200 Bandit - I bought a '97 in November, and regret to sell the FJ, but can't justify keeping both.
For Sale: Listed in the local papers and the Cycle Trader (print and online) for $2500, which according to Kelly and NADA is just under book.

Blue 1986 FJ1200S (Updated: 2000.3.17)

Location: USA (NorthEast) -- Ohio
Experience: 15 years
Bikes Owned: 5
Photo: Photo-Link
Accessories: Givi luggage (rarely on the bike because it is ugly stuff)& tank bag
Modifications: Vance & Hines SS exhaust, Earls 15 row oil cooler, Dyna coils, Dyna ignitor box, braided steel brake lines, Progressive 1700 rear shock, Zero Gravity windscreen (blue), pair of Hella horns mounted up inside of the fairing, YZF600R rims, forks and brakes (a work in progress right now).
Problems: Ignitor box was bad when I purchased the bike (had entire ignition replaced) Carburators were damaged when previous owner installed jet kit. They were replaced. Replaced individual filters that were designed for a CBR900 and therefore did not fit with the stock airbox, Fork seal blown by previous rider. Rear shock is worn out due to the long miles and the weight of the previous rider.
Comments:
I am in the process of making a lot of changes to the old beast. It is getting new running gear this spring and new bearings, collars and bushings in the rear end as well as new steering head bearings. I am also looking at a 1250 kit and a different exhaust. Once all that is finished I will be putting a full lower fairing on and prepping to paint. See my site for more details.
For Sale: I have a GSXR rim that I intended to graft onto my FJ. The swap is proven and very simple. The results and details about the swap can be seen here: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~fjman/GSXRrear.html Contact me via email if interested.
