Still think the 3CV was the best (mini-bus on wrong side of road put paid to that). Now celebrating 10 years of FJ ownership. Best lesson learnt - only trust "the Doc" (try http://www.f-j.cx/ )(UK owners beware of bike dealers with crap mechanics giving bodged repairs and/or bullshit advice).

Problems:
Yeah, just one! - Not enough $ to work on my pending page long list of mods!! But seriously, aside from a minor traffic accident in `94, I've been very lucky. Other than little stuff, the bike remains reliable. Past problems included very hot engine temps when bike was stock, poorly fitting Supertrapp and D & D exhaust systems (both units were promptly returned), corroded/leaking front brake master cylinder, careless motorcycle techs working on my FJ. I've just recently noticed a shuddering feeling coming from the front brakes while braking with a passenger at highway speeds. I still have to investigate, but I read in one UKFJOC newsletter that this can be caused by dirt/corrosion forming on the non-rust resistant caliper pistons (Harrison calipers have stainless pistons).
|
|
Comments:
>>>> HI DOC!! GLAD TO SEE YOU ON THE REGISTRY. <<<< ....This award winning showbike still has the original paint. Its primary function is short/medium range blasting. My "FJR" (vanity plate ID) was dynoed last year at 126 rwhp & 82 ft lbs of torque, which was accomplished with the original pistons, valves, cams and carbs. The new gearing I'm using (16/43) may be a bit radical for the street, but I`ve only added @ 600rpm in 5th gear, improving acceleration, engine braking and overall sportbike feel. It's not the way to go for long distance riding, but it's "free horsepower" for the taking. I`ve been using 100 octane unleaded fuel ($2.65 gallon) for the last few years because of its high purity, consistency and cooler running. Also, the 100 octane fuel damn near eliminates that annoying whine coming from the tank lid! That's almost worth the extra $ all by itself. NOTE - Higher octane wil not increase power unless compression is raised (sourced from Kevin Cameron's SPORTBIKE PERFORMANCE HANDBOOK - highly recommended reading!). I already have lots more stuff in the works regarding installation of - Ohlins rear shock, Mocal 10 row oil cooler kit, Harrison and/or PFM brakes (ALL and more are available through the UKFJOC catalog at a big discount!!) and eventually new saddle leather, inverted front suspension, more cc's and compression, custom paint, etc... >>>>>>ADVICE>>>>>> To avoid tranny problems and optimize lubrication I strongly recommend using 20w50 motorcycle oil, especially in HOT weather! Automotoive oil is obviously cheaper, but in theory you will need to change it more frequently. The FACTORY shift kit mentioned above is a MUST to help prevent tranny damage & provide very positive shifting (no more missed shifts!!) - the clutch basket must be removed to install. If you are having problems with your gears, give FAST BY GAST a call (ph# listed on their website). A carb kit will do much to help an FJ run cooler as well as employing less restrictive intake and exhaust mods. Cam degreeing at 104 to 106 degrees (stock is @ 110 to 111) will also reduce engine temps while creating a measurable power increase up to 3 or 4 hp! Valve clearances need frequent adjustment for peak performance. Also - change your fork, brake & clutch fluids!! Metal in fork oil from break-in can cause seals to eventually leak - been changing fork oil in my bikes regularly for 17 years and have yet to replace a fork seal! A quality hard anodized aluminum rear sprocket will wear just as well as steel if properly aligned, tensioned & maintained (I use Simple Green & chain wax) - more teeth in back, more torque. A louder exhaust increases sonic vibration - I use foam grips, they help. Chapparal (great catalog) is a good one stop mail order shop. Any nationally recognized speed shop can help you get more from your motor ie: Vance & Hines, Dale Walker's Holeshot Performance, APE Racing, etc... Many thanks to H. Marc Lewis for creating such a great place to share info!! Keep your rubber side down and enjoy!!

CB750F (first bike); then a 900 Ninja in '84 (?) (only new bike i ever bought $3400 - the good old days...it kept overheating in city traffic and dumping coolant - not fun to constantly slide in coolant); then an '81 R100RS - AMAZING tourer - still have it (approx 85k miles on it); then an '85 V65 Sabre (Black/Blue/Silver) - a GREAT UJM (stump puller) but i never put a fairing on it and should have (rifle used to make a nice fairing for these but i don't know now) - would like to sell it (see below); now this FJ. always loved them - a friend sold it to me for $3000 this year.
