Red & White 1986 FJ 1200 (Updated: 1999.8.13)
Purchased: Aug. 1986
Usage: 22,000 kilometers, Street/Sport.

Location: Canada (Central) -- Oakville, Ont.
Experience: 32 years. Now, just sunny Sunday mornings.
Bikes Owned: 9
Accessories: None
Modifications: F1 exhaust. K&N filter element. Otherwise stock.
Problems: Originally an erratic idle when hot; seems to have disappeared with switch to synthetic oil. The usual dead fuel gauge. Eats rear tires (OK it's not really a "problem"). Vibration puts my hands to sleep in about 20 minutes - if anybody has a cure, please tell me!
Comments:
I have sometimes been tempted in the 13 years I've owned it, but (so far) no newer bike has yet to lure me away from my FJ!

3SK00644:

Modifications: CBR900RR rear shock w/FJ spring, FZR1000 EXUP rear wheel w/170/60ZR17 tire, mild head work to remove casting imperfections & increase compression.
Problems: Aluminum rear sprockets wear out fast & take the chain with them! V&H SS2R pipes have a poor nickel plating job on them, they rust out quickly! The mirrors are too close together, gee I wonder why I have had this problem on all of my bikes? :-)
Comments:
I love this bike, & so does my passenger =:-)

Comments:
Just bought the bike Dec '98 from private individual. He rode almost all year round, and had clocked up about 60K miles. I think that he bought it used. The only reason he was selling was because he had just found a used "bike of his dreams". Bike is in great shape, a few scratches, but mostly the kind that come from kicked up rocks. Stops one a dime with the braided brake lines.

Comments:
I would like to get a newer bike (R1?), but will never sell this one. I just like it to much, the power, comfort, reliability, handling for a heavy bike. It goes to red line every time i get on it, and has never really left me stranded anywhere, even when i put 3,000m in 1 week (Daytona "94").

Modifications: Changed rear sprocket tooth count from 42 to 41. Replaced rear shock with a Fox Shox.
Problems: Case developed a crack in the engine case at the upper rear motor mount at 35K miles. After two attempts at welding the crack, had to replace the case. Alternator self-destructed itself at 52K miles.
Comments:
The FJ never liked Dunlop tires - the profile is too triangular, making the handling characteristics non-linear. Best (so far) with Metzlers.

Best bike ever owned. Great dual purpose mount fits well when riding with my wife on her kz-440 and my buddy and his 68 triumph bonnie. Or when im riding with my sport bike friends ie zx-11 zx-6r etc she fits right in. With them im usually the last one through the extreme twisties but, for a 14 year old bike she can out accell anyone with the exception of the zx-11

Comments:
I owned this model when it first came out in '83 and loved it. Put 20,000 miles on that bike in little over a year. Traded it off an regretted it. In '94 my wife said she'd buy me a bike for my birthday and I immediately went to the paper and picked out my present FJ 1100. I came out of the box in '89 and has been well taken care of. Best all-around bike ever made (I think).

Comments:
FJ 1200 THE ONLY BIG BIKE I'VE FOUND THAT CAN BE SO DOCILE FOR A BEGINNER, BUT A ANIMAL FOR THE MORE EXPERIANCED BIKER. EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE FASTER BIKE/LARGER TOURERS THE FJ WILL GO JUST AS FAST LOADED THAN UNLOADED AND YOU GET OFF AT THE END OF A RIDE READY TO GO AGAIN.
