Accessories: BMW Accessories: BMW windshield, engine crash bars, kick start, Krauser bags, tail rack, magnetic tank bag for day tripping, head light rock guard, throttle lock, extra brake lights each side of licence plate, radio/pager theft alert, Air Hawk seat cushion (highly recommended), aircraft slip/skid indicator. 2017-added a DOD HD dash cam on windscreen cross-brace. Use it in he car as well. Highly recommended.
Modifications: I've kept it standard, except if you consider the extra brake lights noted above, installed in the interest of safety. I wired a toggle switch into low-beam wire in the headlight bucket so that I can turn the headlight off for starting.
Problems: Front snowflake wheel replaced under warranty due to warping. Transmission splines wore out twice, rebuilt once under warranty, second time a year after warranty expired. Wear determined to be from warped transmission case from factory. Tranny rebuild in new case at 40,682 km. Even though it was BMW's fault "due to heavy stamping" (mechanic said) they would not honour cost or work/new transmission case-no thanks to you BMW Canada. I replaced clutch plates at the same time just because everything was apart, even though there was minimum wear on original plates. I did the tranny removal and the dealership did the tranny rebuild. Speedometer replaced under warranty at 5850 km as trip meter quit, a recurring problem since, with mileage numbers slipping out of allignment but still recording. I've had the speedo apart and partly solved the problem with a backing spring installed to brace the little row of digits. Alternator windings replaced at 74,300 km, a break in one three windings. Problem diagnosed by 1/3 voltage drop off alternator. Electronic ignition trigger unit (bean can) internal centrifical advance mechanism seized. New bean can at 96,660 km. In tracking down the ignition problem I replaced the electronic ignition module (computer) at same time. Great price with two free spark plugs off eBay from Euromotor Electrics, Colorado at 25% BMW price. If you do a yearly or every two years maintenance schedule it is a good idea to lift the computer module from its base and apply new heat-sink-compound Radio Shack or Source Store. Rebuilt carbs with new needles, seats and jets, new floats at same time as bean can refit. I installed new Hagan shocks at 103,152 km from Dave Quinn in Connecticutt. It didn't know how crappy the original shocks got over the years. Bike let me down entirely with trigger unit problem 60 miles from home and bike was trailered home. One other let down with tranny splines pushed it 3 blocks home. The bike goes through a battery every two years. By half way through the second year the solenoid chatters on start. I went to a gel battery and to date have got 4 years from it. Recommended.
Comments:
Done a lot of on-going preventive maintenance. Mufflers rusted badly and replaced at 68,468 km. I've replaced clutch cable, clutch throw rubber boot, shaft rubber boot, front disc brake pads, rear brake shoes, carb diaphragms, float bowl gaskets, alternator brushes, salvaged a good supply of H4 bulbs at wrecker yard, bought a spare (used) coil, spare diode board, I keep spare throttle cables handy on bike, assortment of spare bolts washers, bulbs and spark plugs. I have a tool box full of new and used parts because prices keep going up and up. Proper greasing and oiling of cables, oil and filter changes every 3 to 4,000 km, changing drive oils same schedule, tranny oil every 10,000 km, spline lubrication with every rear tire change by moving tranny back 3/4 inch (width of a toothbrush). Fork seals replaced, fork oil changed regularly with Type F automatic transmission fluid so forks will bleed red if there is a problem. I keep all bearings well greased. Clunky tranny on shifting since day-one. This is a one-owner-bike and I have a comprehensive maintenance record since new. I've looked at maintenance and problems as puzzles and I've never been frustrated with the bike. The R65 is a unique beemer, a great one up machine that can hold highway speed all day long. The bike just never seems to get old, never feels like it is tired or wearing out, the new shocks made a world of difference in the feel on the open highway. The centre of gravity is so low that you can cruise up to a stop sign, do a full stop, pop the clutch and go, no feet down. I've had Michelins, Continentals and Metzler tires and these Lazertecs are the best (although the Continental K-112 rear tire was a great rain tire-used 2 of them, one Michelin front tire felt like it was sliding out even on gentle corners. Nearly lost control in a start of a wobble due to shaft/swing arm flex, highway surface, shock pre-load. Never felt any tendency since installiing the Hagan shocks. Lots of interesting moments with animals: momma bear and three cubs (nearly hit the third one crossing a road in Washington, cat, porcupine, dogs (bit by one), huge buck with big rack of antlers. Missed by half a foot and I've pondered whether any biker has ever been impaled on antlers. I've had the bike for almost exactly half my life and I have no intentions of parting from it. Like some other owners on this registry have said, even with their descriptions of problems greater than mine, I (and they) plainly love the motorcycle. (And I get a kick out how this old Beemer turns a lot of heads). UPDATE May 4, 2014 - like a Timex watch, just keeps on ticking. Pardon the long narrative, but I'm proud of and pleased with 1/3 of a century of bonding experience. Update: June 15, 2019. 39th summer atop the same bike since new. Replaced neutral switch a year ago. Still my daily runner, average about 5000 km a year.

Accessories: Hepco & Becker 'Gobi' panniers, with rear rack - not good - poor quality panniers and racks had to be welded 5 times! (now removed), crash bars, cruise control, pot-racks, Sure-foot sidestand, super-comfy seat, tank-cover.
Modifications: Unleaded valve conversion, progressive fork springs, Koni dial-a-ride shocks, ATE brake caliper exchanged for Brembo, cast iron brake disc (single), Goodridge stainless steel braided brake hose, stainless steel exhausts & silencers, spoked wheels, 'comfort' seat, 400W alternator upgrade, modern coil, updated regulator (ha ha - see below, back to old one), new diode board, Odyssey battery, sumpguard, powder-coated frame, swing-arm & headlamp bracket, harder-wearing re-machined bevel gear splines (which seem just as hard wearing as the originals, i.e. last about 50,000miles!).
Problems: Lots with this mileage. Broken con-rod destroyed the first motor at 36,000. Leakage from rear of engine for years turned out to be a microscopic hairline crack in the oil pump cover. A waste of oil, time and clutch plates. Occasional charging system problems seem cured with Odyssey battery. This battery, among other things, was then destroyed by the "new improved" 'regulator' not bothering to regulate. Not all the upgrades are good. Luckily I kept the old one, which was fine. Headlamp bracket not strong enough to hold a large windscreen (over bumpy roads).
Comments:
Perfect bike for every occasion. Excellent tourer, despatcher and commuter. It's a dirt bike on dirt (but less fun in mud!), a 250 on the twisties and sits at 80mph all day on motorways - what more could you ask? This bike is better than it was when it left the factory - one of the great things is that BMW keep supplying upgrades and replacement parts are readily available. Ridden 55,000miles from August '06 to May '08 rtw (see blog). Africa was fantastic, S America, Central America quick but interesting, US surprisingly fun, NZ cool, Aus . . . hmm, SE Asia was hot, Nepal was cool, India was nuts, Iran was friendly but cold, Turkey was beautiful but frustrating - home now!

Accessories: Leather Tank Cover (Custom), BMW Multivario Tank Bag, BMW Engine Protection Bars (never used), Rectangular Mirrors set in white plastic casing to match mag wheels (bought in Japan - never used), Helmet Bra.
Modifications: Only the passenger hand grips have been painted black. The rest of the bike is factory original.
Problems: Paint on white mag wheels proved too brittle and began to flake at 500 Km. BMW Canada generously covered the cost of wheel removal/repainting after determining the problem was attributed to a lack of `flexible agent` in the paint. I learned that the composite alloy mag wheels flex and therefore needed a flexible paint. The 'vibration thing' and the tendency to `nose dive` which are both well documented problems. Poorly designed/positioned round mirrors (stock) which provide rear views that are obstructed by one`s forearms. Rusting exhaust pipes (serious around the baffle seams of the mufflers).
Comments:
Minor problems aside . . . this `little red rooster` is agile in the city and steady on the highway.

Red- 2013 rebuild to silver 1983 R65 LS (Updated: 2016.4.23)

Tires: Conti Super Twins
Owner: Tony Shaw
Email to Tony Shaw
Location: UK -- Lake District
Experience: 35 years.
Bikes Owned: 20 odd
Accessories: BMW panniers, Twin horns. Bought it with a pincher fairing
Modifications: Pretty much standard except for a better headlight (off a Yamaha.) Progressive springs in the forks, standard R65 rear wheel, aftermarket discs and a homemade wiring loom. Fork brace.
Problems: Seems to need engine work every 80 thou. I've just done its second full engine rebuild, had the heads off about five times when the valves needed attention. The O/E wiring! On its third set of coils and tends to eat spark plugs. (Could be caused by the wet weather as I live in the Lake District UK. September 2012, after 24 years of hard miles, age finally caught up with my lovely old lady and the frame failed at the swing arm mount, taking out the gear box. A full strip down and a paint strip revealed that her frame is rotten and cracked in to many places to realistically consider it safe to repair. Although the engine bottom end is still in reasonable condition, thats about all. The cam shaft is badly worn and the barrels are verging on worn to oversize. As it stands just now, the bike is dead. March 2013. A doner R65ls frame from an abandoned project R65ls has been sourced from ebay, and the bike is undergoing a comprehensive rebuild/restoration. Since the new frame has come with a valid logbook, the bike will be built into this identity and once it is running and road legal I'll see if its is possible to transfer back to the old reg no. January 2015, It's alive! The engine has just run for the first time in since the original frame died, whether she can be classed as the same bike is a moot point, but as everything that was salvageable from my original R65 had been built into the Mk2 version, as far as I am concerned its close enough! My restored R65 has been running now for over a year since the rebuild and is a little gem, although its been superseded by a R1200r as my main bike, I now use her mostly for navigation rallys and last year she completed, a few local event, the UK 3 Nations Challenge and an Iron Butt so I think I did a pretty good job on the restoration.
Comments:
My Beemer has a personality! Reminds me of an old Triumph twin except you dont have to tighten up every 200 miles! Orignally bought as a reiliable bike to see me through collage and ten years later I've still got her. Although I would like one of the new boxers I like the ease of self maintance and the functional logic of her design. In standard trim my R65 is reliable regardless of the weather. Except during rebuilds I've used her every day as my main form of transport for both short and long distances.

Modifications: It came with the twin disk ATE front brake, like for R65LS. Nice brakes after I rebuilt everything.
Problems: Valve Face Plastic Deformation? I had to open up the exhaust valves some after only 2,000 miles. I failed to measure how much they had closed, tho. I need to replace the push rod tube seals, I'll check the valves then. 5/4/05 No sign so far of the problem. Update 1/12/07 Hope I don't jinx myself, but so far the valve clearances have not changed again. The tranny went out though, am having it rebuilt. 5/2007 Clutch went out, so I replaced all the parts except the throwout bearing with the upgraded (post '81) parts. New valves, guides, and rings in 2009. Steve Prokop did the work. New valves, guides, rings, and seats in 2013, after only 30,000 miles. Replaced timing chain, but it didn't need it.
Comments:
Nice running bike, handles fine, want headlight so I can remove the Windjammer for the summer. Full VIN on tag hard to read: WBM 0364 B 3855 where blanks = illegible characters Expect to update that mileage every year or so....

Accessories: BMW OEM Touring cases, Oxford tank bag.
Modifications: Alpha Ignition system, Stainless steel braided front brakes lines.
Problems: Last owner had incorrect fuel lines installed on the bike, I replaced with OEM, carburetors were leaking and dirty, cleaned and adjusted them. The push rod tubes weeping slightly, The last owner had about a pint 1/2 too much oil in the engine! I drained the oil to the proper level. The fuel tank over flow vent tube missing, I installed new vent tubing to prevent fuel from leaking on the top engine case. After installing the new Alpha ignition system, I got it started and running fairly well. I then changed the oil and oil filter. The engine would not rev past 4,000 r.p.m. and was very quite. The valve train should be making more noise than it was, found out the valves were adjusted too tight, engine couldn't breath! Got the timing about right valves adjusted, now it revs freely to red line, more like it. The engine has a valve clicking sound which is normal operation for an old BMW, which is better than the valves being too tight. The drive shaft gear oil was empty, looks like no one ever filled it. Topped it off with Mobil 1 70/90 gear oil, changed transmission and rear end to Mobil 1 gear oil. Changed engine oil to Mobil 1 20W50. Got everything straightened out with no damage to the engine and is running good with no further issues thus far. Cosmetic problems, scrapes on fender/fairing and chipped paint on the rear cowl. Fuel tank needs bottom black trim painted to match factory paint scheme. Paint coming off the wheels.
Comments:
The Henna Red, with white wheels R65LS is a really fun bike to ride, handles nicely and it is kind of rare, don't see many of them. The bike grows on people and I can say this is true. With clean aggressive lines and functional components, Hans Muth got it right!
