Carbs had wrong jets and had to be rebuilt. Ignition needed tightening up in order to ensure good contacts. Used punch on prongs on back of ignition switch to tighten it up.

When I come to a halt, after a longish journey, at steady speed, (c. 20 miles) no matter how gently I release the clutch lever, the bike lurches forward 'bronco' style in first gear. After this the gears are very smooth again. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has experienced a similar problem. Could it become very dangerous? Is it an R65 quirk? UPDATE: Had clutch (friction) plate replaced. Splines were dry /rusty and plate was significantly worn. Seven hours labour. Problem solved. Fingers crossed! Ah! La belle France! UPDATE: Put up 2006 miles (3,200 kms) on journey to Pyrenees. No lurches (DG)! Many people wanted to talk BMW in France, the R65 being the focus. Spotted many BMW bikes on route with the BMW logo. Counted five/six R1150GS. Experienced slight loss of engine oil through three of the pushrod tube seals. Otherwise fine. 3/07/13: Many hours spent restoring elements of the bike.

Comments:
I am delighted to have come back into bikes again after twenty years via an R65. Qualifying for Classic Insurance means that it won't break the bank. Footman James offer a good deal. This particular bike has been well cared for and is in good original condition overall. I don't intend to let go of it for the forseeable future.

Modifications:
Slide-mounts for 20mm ammo cans used as saddle bags, my own design. Work out much better than anything from BMW, and are lockable. Mount for license plate version of EZ-Pass to instrument cluster, my own design.

Problems:
Original coil of defective design. Replaced with revised factory part. Gas tank prone to corrosion; Welded, fixed with tank seal kit, and refinished. The original instrument cluster is made out of cheap plastic and has deteriorated into a crumbled mess. I am in the process of fabricating a replacement cluster to hold the original instruments. This is no mean feat.

Comments:
Always use the 25AH BMW battery with this machine. Electricals are marginal at best when used with a battery of smaller capacity. Tried looking into transplanting a bigger battery into the bike, but the location is very tight and there is nothing else that will both fit and give full power capacity required. Electrical wiring is a tad light for the current being delivered to the starter. I'm looking into replacing the wiring with a heavier gauge.

Modifications:
The bike was restored to as close as OEM condition as possible. A new set of SS Keihan exhaust headers and mufflers were fitted due to the degraded condition of the original exhaust system. A complete top end job was performed by Ted Porter with updated valves, seats, guides and springs.

Problems:
The bike was stored near the waterfront in San Diego unprotected by the OR. The bike has been completely restored to it's OEM state. It sat for approximately 15 years prior to the complete restoration.

The bike's restoration was completed in May of 2010. It was a complete ground-up restoration renewing it to it's original stock condition with no modifications.

Problems:
its been in storage for the last ten years, so its like an easter egg hunt finding whats gone bad. but nothing major,just plug wires, clutch, cable, batery, and carb gunk so far. All the storage Problems are worked out, leaks from the left side push rod tubes, hope to fix this winter. Broke the damper gear on input shaft of tranny, burnt up rearend gears, my fault no oil.
