Accessories: Heated grips, saddlebags, BMW luggage rack and bag mounts, G/S repro seat/rack, G/S hand guards, Heinrich leg shields, fork gaiters, dual Fiamm horns, GPSr mount, blade-type fuse block, LED taillight from Moto Elektrik, Hyper-Lites LED brake/running lights.
Modifications: I unplug the turn signal beeper until I forget to cancel a turn signal, then I reconnect it for a while. Being a U.S. import, I had European handlebars installed at the 500 mi service. Hagon shocks at 75,000 mi (overdue!).
Problems: It used to be a hard starter in cold (cool) weather. As a result it was hard on batteries. In the Spring of 1994 I was riding the interstate at about 80 - 85 mph. It started loosing power. I just thought one of the carbs was acting up or one of the coils. So I just kept on riding (basically on one cylinder) hoping it would clear itself up. Then I came upon a slight incline (this is central Indiana) and it died completely! I got it home and because I had other priorities (like moving to PA) it sat untouched for 1 1/2 years. Finally I opened the motor up and found the following: the left connecting rod twisted and broken, both cylinder skirts had pieces broken off, the camshaft was broken in two, there was a hole about the size of a nickle in the top of the crankcase near the starter and I think the right piston skirt had some damage also. Both heads are in good shape, it doesn't appear to have dropped a valve. The oil level was up to spec. I have never figured out what caused this catastrophe. I added up the cost of replacement parts and went out and found a used motor. There was 53000 mi on the clock. I change my oil every 3000 mi. Blah blah blah. **11/99** This year has been very enlightening. After almost twenty years together (my R65 & I) I finally bought an aftermarket (Yuasa) battery. This helped eliminate the hard starting I had experienced for a long time. I sense it will also eliminate having to replace the battery every other year. The other learning experience I had was admitting that I am not a great mechanic, and a good mechanic is a great thing to have access to. Not to mention spending the money once a year to make sure it is in top shape. I took it out after over a month of not riding, and it started right up, and settled down to a nice idle rather quickly.
Comments:
This was my first BMW. My third bike. I have enjoyed it a lot. From Indianapolis I have ridden it to Arkansas, Georgia, and New Mexico. It has always been a faithful friend. It has been stolen once. The thieves kept the battery (fools) and the Tracy sport fairing. They sure had to work to get that battery :)

Problems: Bought it with 18,000 miles in 2007. At 30k the floats sunk on a ride 600 mile ride home. Squared up the cv tops at that point. The rear drive seal and a complete clutch/pressure plate/spring was replaced years before i bought it. At 35k the rear seal started to leak and the clutch begain to feel really weak. At 38k bought new seals and had 2 new friction plates cut. I'll clean the old clutch and rebond the new friction plates myself. Looking for a better gear ratio. The stock one is fine for giddy up and go..but want to lower the RPM's per mile. The rpms at 65MPH is higher then my other Bimmer's and Beemer.

Comments:
Bike was my father's. He taped it to repaint the frame in 1993. Things got in the way and it never happened. He sold the house in 2006 and delivered the bike to me in pieces that fall. Got it running but ran out of time to finish. Hauled it to Dallas for completion. Now riding it a day or two at a time until the next thing breaks. I really enjoy the bike but working out the bugs on a 30+ year old bike that sat for almost 15 years is trying my patience. Persistence will triumph.

Location: USA (NorthCentral) -- Milwaukee, WI
Experience: Riding since 1981, no car since 1998
Bikes Owned: 4 currently, 9 BMWs, numerous UJMs
Accessories: Pichler Uni-4 fairing, Krauser bags, Reynolds backrest/rack, Corbin saddle, engine protection bars. Just added factory heated grip kit.
Modifications: Added fuse block and relays for headlight & horn. Steibel compact air horn. Stainless braided brake line. Working on custom top brace for top of steering stem.
Problems: I am the third owner, and the PO had neglected some of the maintenance. Had to replace the steering head bearings and front brake master cylinder due to moisture intrusion and corrosion damage. Luckily found mouse nest in air cleaner BEFORE I let him attempt to start it for me... Otherwise, she seems to be in good order.
Comments:
I am suprised at how readily this little Beemer revs. I am used to the longer stroke versions of the engine, from my old R75s to the current R100RTs that are in the stable. The short stroke really makes her feel more lively on the throttle than I expected.
For Sale: The Krauser bags are in good shape, but I would like to trade them for a set of the BMW touring bags for uniformity across my stable.
