Modifications: "Blue" ultrawhite (Xenon) headlight. Four-way hazard flasher. Custom rear luggage rack. Ikon (koni) rear shocks. Handlebar end mirrors. Engine protection "crash" bars. "Givi" weather shield. "Gearsack" tank bag.
Problems: Replaced failed neutral gear sensor and worn original rear suspension units at 80K km. Front suspension reconditioned (steering head bearings and races, front forks and seals) at 85K km. Transmission replaced with a restored unit at 90K km. Timing chain replaced at 95K km. Bing carburettors cleaned and reconditioned at 95K km. Precautionary recondition of engine (rings and exhaust valves replaced, head barrels polished) at 100K km.
Comments:
Versatile agile tourer with voluminous panniers. A great bike for touring off expressways. An underrated motorcycle that performs everything confidently, except at very high speeds (110+ km/h, 70+ mph). The R65 and I logged over 30,000 km together from November 2002 to May 2004, all solo, almost exclusively touring fully loaded, usually with camping gear. We crossed almost half Australia together and camped out many times. The valve seats and inlet valves were in excellent condition and the pistons looked "factory new" when the engine was reconditioned after just over 100,000 km as a precaution before a 3,000 km tour of northeastern New South Wales in October 2005. The R65 has the most comfortable seat for touring I have experienced. Aided by >300 km refueling gaps and comfortable riding position, I made several day rides of 7am to 7pm (>1,000 km/day). The single front Brembo caliper and disc do an excellent job in my opinion even when loaded to the gunnels. It is competent but not impressive on an expressway (where the legal upper speed limit is 110 km/h in Oz) if one remembers to use the transmission. This is solo but fully loaded with camping gear. With application of the gears she easily gets up to 140 km/h or more for overtaking. I have taken her out to 150 km/h a few times. There is a little more speed there. It is not possible to overload the R65. I literally moved "house" interstate twice on this bike. Handling is excellent if I keep the heavier items on the centreline and forward. The R65 is at its absolute touring best on "second class" roads, that is, sealed roads that are not expressways. Australian National and State highways (state highways and county roads in USA) are its real forte. Very enjoyable touring through twisties and mountain roads. It handles unsealed roads surprisingly well. It is very secure in its handling since the front and rear suspension recondition running Metzlers front and rear. Replacement of the timing chain increased low rpm torque which improved riding in the twisty stuff and touring in the mountains. Engine recondition and carburetor service increased torque and power noticeably. Fuel consumption ranges from 17 to 21 km/litre (40-50 mpg US or 48-60 mpg Imperial), about 340-420 km or 210-260 miles per tankful on tour. Riding around eastern Australia we often drew favourable comments. Many riders have happy memories of their time on an R65. Sadly, this is also a memory for this rider as I was forced to sell this fantastic machine after moving overseas permanently. I loved touring on this bike. It was so much fun to ride! Definitely the best bike I have owned. Hopefully I can find another.
For Sale: Reluctantly sold in April 2009. I hope the next owner and subsequent owners treat her well. If he/she does, they will be rewarded with a wonderful relationship with an excellent bike.

Modifications: Progressive Suspension shocks and fork springs...very stable ride. Air tubes removed from air box. I plan to install a San Jose fork brace and Gustaffson windscreen on it.
Comments:
Second owner purchased bike in 1984 and just sold it. It's in amazingly original shape and the paint still shines beautifully... not a scratch on it anywhere. Still has its complete tool kit, original owner's manual, and all of the stickers under the seat. It was built in Dec. '81 and came with ATE calipers instead of Brembos. Searched for months for a nice silver LS (prefer it over the bright red) and lucked into this one. Bought it for a very reasonable price and drove 1,300 miles to pick it up. Also, thanks for your excellent registry Marc...many people appreciate it!!!

Purchased R65 new in March 1981, aged seventeen. 150,000 miles recorded on route to Barton-on-Humber bike event, 9-7-03. Easter Weekend 2004. First trip abroad on my R65. Hull/Rotterdam/Hamburg/Denmark. Fantastic and eventfull. Just returned from a return trip to Latvia via Holland, Germany, Poland, Lithuania. 20-5-08 to 30-5-08, 3000 miles. Even after 200,000 miles the R65 did the trip without any mechanical incident. This bike has given me everything and owes me nothing. A great trip to mark 200,000 miles.

Problems: Replaced left combination switch, replaced mufflers with stainless EPCOs. Too loud. EPCO said "send 'em back and we will make you another, quiter pair. Can't beat that, but I don't have them back yet. Clonk in front suspension. Common I hear. Had forks stripped and spacers installed and rubber dampers replaced. I think they got it. Very difficult to put on and off center stand. Installed a used Reynolds.

Location: USA (NorthEast) -- Grand Haven, Michigan
Experience: Motocross during high school. 10 years no riding. My R65 since 1991
Bikes Owned: 3
Accessories: Very minimal. Like to keep it simple and original. Tank bag is a Black Diamond rock climbers bag that fits as if custom.
Modifications: Shorter handlebars - somewhere between the regular and the LS versions for a slightly more foreward position against the wind. Koni shocks and a front fork stabilizer. Replaced multi-piece headlamp innards with a single sylvania automobile unit - just had to grind off two small alignment knubs on the perimeter of the bulb and it then fit perfectly. Even the harness plugged in without modification. Zip-tied the fibreglass battery side covers on - a must, or you will eventually lose them. After slamming my knuckles a dozen times under the seat, I added a small gas shock from the rear lid of a volks scirroco. Works beautifully. Trimmed a lot of fat off the rear fibreglass fender and mounded it onto the swingarm and incorporated the taillight, signals, and lic plate into the underseat glove/tool box. This overall made the rear wheel appear less ungainly forward and improved the sillouette of the bike dramatically. Replaced all visible fasteners with highest grade stainless steel hex-socket bolts. Will eventually add another fuel petcock to the right saddle of the tank. Installed an OEM Suzuki steering damper 15 USD ebay) and inserted 9inches of steel bar stock into the handlebar ends. These two mods have entirely eliminated the 'shimmies' and greatly increased my confidence in medium to high speed corners. My next mod is going to be a kickstand microswitch to disable the starter button unless the stand is up. The only spill I've ever taken on this bike was caused by the stand.
Problems: Numerous small details. Exterior shift linkage snapped at 15000mi. OEM is just a flimsy rod with bent ends. Replaced with aircraft style shaft w/threaded rod ends. Transmission input shaft splines went soon afterward - had never been lubed. "Clunk" in steering column when hitting railroad crossings is maddeningly undiagnosable. Three trained mechanics, shock disassembly, steering bearing replacements, etc, etc, to no remedy. It drives me insane. Weak recharging system - not good on a bike so well tempered to short commutes. Pop riveted an NAPA 1.5amp trickle charger to the top of the air cleaner cover and plug the bike in once a week. Run out of first gear in a few short feet. Wish I had a better ratio in the final ring gear. I'm light weight and would appreciate a little more reach throughout the gears. Hard to balance these carbs but I recently came across plans for a 'four dollar manometer' on the web and built it. Twenty feet of aquarium hose, a yardstick, and a few ounces of lightweight fork oil. Google "diy manometer" and there are a few plans out there with instructions. It's super easy to use and enables you tune the carbs through a wide range of RPM.
Comments:
I love this bike. Its style and personality have grown steadily on me since the day I bought it. Why would anyone part with something like this? Within a week of buying it I took a friend to Chicago on the main expressway from Ann Arbor, MI. I was sorely (literally) disappointed with it. This is not an autobahn rocket. On the return trip, we chose to travel the secondary byways adding a couple of hours to our time on the road. Revelation! I might never have discovered motorcycling away from the superhighway if I hadn't first landed on a 650cc bike.

Long term design success. Chrome exhausts, silver aluminum wheels and engine, smooth black paint with pinstriping, all mechanicals visible, reliable. Quiet unless pressed. Always starts. Nice clutch. Nimble. Takes as long to warm up as takes me to wake up. Parking attendants allow for close parking due to appearance. Nice motorcycle to ride in country, excellent to ride around city and arrive at dinner clean.

Problems: could use a new paint job, snowflake wheels hard to clean, tach is not accurate anymore. A handful of minor electrical gremlins disappeared after cleaning all connections and getting a new ground cable for the battery.
Comments:
I bought this bike in '95 after a hitnrunner destroyed my Yamaha Seca. It's been a real fun bike, great handling on the backroads, good for long road trips. A lot of fun torque for a little 650. Not the speediest bike out there, but gets the job done. Easy to work on, hard to kill. Most maintenance jobs are easily done by a home mechanic - trips to the dealer aren't necessary.

Problems: The carbs are continually needing attention, they a real problem, a very weak component. I was replacng the battery about every year at $100+ it was getting expensive. The last one was a gell cell and it is doing great, showing no signs of trouble. Very much worth the money. Starter switch problem fixed by replacing yellow solenoid under tank). This solenoid has gone out 4 times and is going again. Both speedo and tach have been replaced by PaloAlto Speedometer in CA, they were awesome folks, the new/rebuilt units are perfect. Snowflake wheels shows discoloration and some oxidation. I found a Powder Coater here and will have them do the wheel this winter. A few minor cosmetic issues. Will likely have it painted this winter, considering going red because the funky green/blue will be hard to duplicate. Front brakes stick and lock down (fixed - return hole in master was plugged). This is a recurring problem, a weak design.
Comments:
As much as I love this bike I find it very aggravating with so many problems that keep me from riding it on a regular basis. The carbs, solenoid, front break master cylinder all add up to a big pain in the neck.
