Problems: currently and suddenly I experienced a loss of power, and it seems as if its running on one cylinder. I've first changed the plugs, air filter, check and cleaned the carberator bowls. Next gave it a compression check, both sides nearly identical. Next I check for spark by holding plugs against the metal head and applied starter button, viewing the spark in the dark it appeared that the right spark was significally brighter than the left. ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT TO REPACE OR CHECK NEXT?

Comments:
It's a great bike for commuting to work and riding around town. Although it's no sportsbike, I was able to hang with a K100, Moto Guzzi Daytona and Yamaha FJR1100 for 300 miles on a recent trip to Willow Springs (yes, they could have dusted me in a heartbeat had they choosen to).

Gearbox overhauled, rear main seal replaced and a new clutch friction plate fitted as amatter of course after 200.000km.
Comments:
A value for money bike, unfortunately the R65 is a much underrated bike here in Australia. I have covered quite a ffew long distant rides and it has only let me down on two occasions, the wiring loom melting in the headlight and problems with electrics as aforementioned. As a solo tourer it is fine. Compared to my R100RS the R65 is very nimble and far more fuel efficient,( 32mm Bing Carbies do have their advantages. The R65 has its limits when used for touring with a pillion and load. Obviously you can tour on most bikes provided you modify them to suit your needs, and the type of riding you do. I am selling my R65 as I have purchased another bike and cannot afford to keep both. I purchased this BMW from new and over the 16 years of ownership I consider it to be value for money bike.It is useful as a commuter much easier than the RS and I have ridden it for long periods of time from the west coast to the east coast of Australia and the motor keeps on ticking over nicely. It does what you expect of it, obviously it is slower than the bigger CC bikes but as a 650cc air coooled twin, I have found it to be a very reliable motorcycle capable of covering vast distances but at a slower pace, it will run all day and all night if need be.

Bikes Owned: 8
Photo: Photo-Link
Accessories: S fairing, BMW hard panniers/carrier, tank bag, tank cover
Modifications: converted to wire spoked wheels front and back. converted to twin disc brake up front Fork gaiters, steering dampner, uprated H4 Globe 100high/55low beam, Headlamp protector, kangaroo whistlers, Koni rear shocks, progressive forks front. Use 10 weight fork oil, and NGK spark plug caPS ( RESISISITOR TYPE ) Staintune header pipes and mufflers fitted. I have found a friction screw , helps when touring all day. I have had to brace and well the pannier frames as the original one cracked I also made up a cross over to join both pannier frames and use straps around the panniers to keep it all together.( behind the back of the rear mudflap) I also have had the headlamp retaining plate braced/ poweder coated The addition of BMW Fork Baiters has helped as I have not had to replace as many fork seals, now that they are fitted.
Problems: resistor caps in original BMW leads burnt out and also the twin dual coil.Original light cast alloy rims kept cracking, were replaced under warranty, however continued to have problems so fitted wire spoked wheels as brought out by the 1978 and early 1979 R65. It vibrates at 110kph which is our outer city speed limit. Does not run to0 well on lead free petrol nor ULP Unleaded petroleum or Gas as you call it. It prefers standard fuel that is rated at 98 Octane level. The electrical wiring that connects to the H4 Globe burnt out on me late at night in South Australia on my way back to Perth ! Scary , when you are doing 110kph and suddenly the lights go out, on an unlit road in the country. Have replaced the single roller cam chain 7 times, they last about 50,000km from my experience. It has had a top end rebuild, the rear main seal has been replace and I replaced the friction plate in the clutch, had the gearbox overhauled and the Diff. These things have worn out over the years and as a result of high milage rather than being a problem. From my experience it is the electrics which is the archilles heel of the R65, they should have stuck to points/condenser rather than fitting halls effect electronic ignition to the R65. Fitted new switch blocks left and right as well as the rubber bits . Had to replace and then brace and strengthen these pannier frames so that they would not crack as the original did.
Comments:
A very good motorcycle for solo purposes, fuel efficient, servicing the bike is straight forward. Able to cover long distances, even in the higher rev range and sit on these speeds all day , I can attest to this having ridden from Port Augusta in South Australia back to Perth a few years ago, even as I rolled down our drive way and got of the bike it was still idling well, me I was completely stuffed, yet the bike would have kept on going. I have owned this bike since new and overall it has served me well. I have found that by converting it to twin discs, replacing the front forks springs with heavier progressive types, using 10 weight fork oil instead of the 5 weight typ and usung a slightly small 90/90 tyre up front has greatly improved the handleing of my R65, also adding the front dis has not only improved in the braking department , i find that the front wheel does not float or lift as much when on tour out in the country. I have found Metzler tyres to be the best tyres overall on this bike, particularly in wet conditions. The steering is quite light and I have found that adding a steering dampner has helped some what , particularly when riding in soft sand/ soft dirt. It is quite a light bike and a lot easier to handle in these situations as compared to my RS , which is sunsatntiallt heavier. I bought my R65 new and whilst it appeared to be expensive to purchase , it has served me well over the years and as a small sized air cooled twin has been a very economical bike to own and run, it is good as a hack to get to and from work and able to tour over long distances I have toured over to the eastern sea board through Victoria and New South Wales as well as most of Western Australia. and have found it to be a reliable bike capable of doing most things, it won't keep up with the bigger cc bike, such as the 1000cc boxer beemers, but it won't be left too far behind either. It is now for sale as I have purchased another beemer.
For Sale: BMW R65 1985. One owner bike, well maintained and in very good original condition, has lots of extras, twin discs, wire spoked wheels front and back, fork gaiters S Type faiting, new springs front and back, Progressive Front/Konis Rear stainless steel exhaust system, Tank cover tank bag/ Panniersand rear carrier, licensed, recent top end overhaul and carby rebuild. Comments:
The bike was bought over the internet and delivered from Texas. It had 8500 miles on it and hadn't been registered for about 2 years prior to my purchasing it. When I took it off of the delivery skid, I quckly realised the steering was locked up. I thought the lock was jammed but it was due to the grease in the steering head bearings being dried out. I cleaned the old grease out, repacked the bearings, changed all of the fluids and the bike has been running fine ever since. It had the original tires on it. Until I learned how to start it, it started hard in cold weather.

Refit pistons into new seals patiently using only finger pressure or seals will be damaged.
Problems: Just the usual when buying 18 year old bike ie fork seal, some flooding and dripping carburettor, carbs out of balance. Previous owner had stripped a few threads.Just replaced exhaust valves because of stories of valve failure;didn't bother with lead free conversion.New coil - old one cracked at 45000.New timing chain 49000 miles- probably not needed, old parts pretty good condition.
Comments:
Very pleased with bike even if vibration and valve noise appear to be necessary condition of ownership.Took bike around North West Scotland in September 99. Cruised well and a handy size on the passes and hairpins.Good overall engineering quality outweighs a bit of noise.

Accessories: Memphis Shades Hellcat Windshield, Chase Harper Stealth Saddlebags, Tour Master Tailpack
Problems: The pushrod assembly for the clutch replaced. Very noisey valves between 3,000-3,500 rpms. Odometer failed at 52,000 miles. After repair of odometer, speedometer 5-7 mph slower than actual speed. Dash replaced. Shift linkage broke, replaced with the new linkage setup. Seems to be better than the original design.
Comments:
I always wanted a twin after owning a single R 27. The bike is very easy to ride, and has more than enough power. I really do not know anything about the bike's history other than the previous owner bought it from Brown Motor Works in Pomona. The bike is in excellent condition, and does not look its' 21 years. A joy to ride.
