Location: USA (NorthWest) -- Boise, ID
Experience: 20
Bikes Owned: 4
Accessories: Reynolds rack and bag mounts, Plexifaring III, K1 grips, Lever type throttle lock.
Modifications: Braided steel front brake line, Works Performance shock, Luftmeister progressive fork springs.
Problems: Broken rocker arm (in the rain far from home of course), shorted starter wiring (with a bump starter kicked in at speed, wiring routed incorrectly), rear main shaft seal, fork seals, tranny rebuilt (twice), valve guides, studs helicoiled (twice), headlight relay, alternator brushes. And...sadly, a few self inflicted things I did because I was just a bonehead (e.g. stripped the exhaust nut, eventually had a new stub welded on at BMW Santa Cruz, they did an excellent job).
Comments:
Single shock chassis. Excellent brakes. Good handling when the shock is fresh. Now hits an even 7000 rpm with chin on gas tank in fifth. Used the bike for a little of everything, several track days (one of the few Beemers that touch pegs before the heads), cross country tours, commuting, etc. Wonderfully simple bike. Light and easy to handle. Needs more guts and feels happiest at high speeds when everything smooths out beautifully (~5500 RPM) albeit with pretty bad gas mileage.

Problems: Cylinder heads rebuilt
Comments:
Great little bike. Last owner rebuilt heads. Other than a new battery, has been problem free for me. Just tuned and synched carbs, replaced throttle cables, and a couple of other minor worn parts. Runs perfectly. Ecellent condition. Email me at doug.green[at]community.royalroads.ca for photos and more info.
For Sale: Asking CDN$3900 or US$2800. Trades considered. Includes original tool kit and owners manual. If interested, email me for photos and more info. Can deliver anywhere in BC, Canada, or arrange shipping for farther away.

Accessories: BMW low bars with bar end mirrors; BMW "S" fairing with clock and voltmeter; BMW mounts with Krauser-style bags. Has Run-n-lites installed and a Signal Dynamics LED brake light bar.
Modifications: Needs new tires, will probably mount Pirelli MT08/09 Match Sport Touring. Currently has a 100/90 front and 120/90 rear which seem to work great, so that's what I'll go with.
Problems: None
Comments:
Best handling bike I've ever owned. My other bike is a K75, and is more like an appliance compared to the R65 - the K just doesn't have any character. There's something about the R65 that gives it real soul!n

Accessories: Bare bones except for the front windscreen. I am looking for panniers, side bage either soft but preferably hard ones.
Modifications: I don't think so
Problems: The main one would be that it seems to not be recharging the battery terribly well. That's next season's priority. Other than that, it's a joy

Accessories: Panniers & BMW screen - screen removed
Modifications: Bituro silencers
Problems: Poor Starting. No spark when electic starter in use. Found problems with the whole ignition system and had to replace coil, trigger unit, HT leads. Ran well for a year then had starting problems with it starting on one cylinder only for a while. This was traced to a problem with the choke. Fixed with a secondhand carb. Compression was slightly down, noticable because of oil in the bottom of the air filter housing. The heads were fine when removed and so replaced the rings. Compression is now A1. It sound quite alot but the bike has been reliable and most of the work has been due to old age.
Comments:
The R65 handles okay and is not fast but is fine when wound up. The 65 sounds great, the Bituro's are slightly louder than the standard pipes.

Comments:
I lived on my motorcycles when I was in my 20's. Toured most of the East coast and into Canada. Many memories were had on two wheels, until the day that a person walked out in front of me, at 40 MPH. I decided that I did'nt want to ride anymore. Then I had the old mid-life problem, and this was my 50th Birthday gift to my self. I enjoy the bike almost as much as I did my new 75/5 toaster tank, I just keep a keen eye on pedestrians.

Accessories: Clip-on Eclipse panniers, original equipment luggage rack (rarely used)
Modifications: Painted Black from original Bronco Brown; mounted euro bars, removed jug guards; stainless brake hose, Progressive front springs and Koni rear shocks from Eurotech, R90S mirrors, general removal of chrome bits, LS exhaust to replace rusted originals
Problems: Usual age related leaks and gremlins, none serious or hard to fix, removed jugs to replace pushrod seals and found original crosshatching on the cylinder walls after 48,000 miles! Replaced brushes on alternator and voltage regulator recently. Generally trouble free and very reliable.
Comments:
I love this bike, it does everything moderately well without really excelling at anything. I bought it from an old guy and took it all apart and cleaned it up with minor 'improvements' as above. I would like a little fly screen or maybe an S fairing but have had trouble finding one which wouldn't interfere with the guages. I really can't imagine selling it. Update 10/01- Found a fairing very similar to S-Type, cleaned, painted and made mounting brackets - Looks great and added about 10 mph!

Comments:
This is a lovely bike and looks as if it just rolled out of the shop. This is my sixth BM including Rs & Ks.age of 50 ,I just ride in the summer these days and my partner also rides. She is yet to ride this machine - a real bike. At present the coil is giving trouble but I have a replacement to fit. I do have pics of the bike but no page setup. This is my next job! I can mil pics if anyone ants to see her (the bike)

Experience: From 1982 to 1887 then 2001+
Bikes Owned: 36
Accessories: Screen. Stainless steel exhaust system. I am thinking about getting a tank cover for the winter.
Modifications: The previous owner has fitted retaining screws to the side panels, a useful mod from what I have read elsewhere. The bike is a pre 1981 model with twin ATE front brakes with a post 1981 engine and gearbox.
Problems: Since buying the bike I have replaced the shocks with Konis (dial a rides). Fitted new fork seals and gaiters. Had the seat recovered and resprayed the rusty seat cowl. Replaced the Speedo. Replaced all 3 BMW Badges. The next job is to get the exhaust valves replaced as I have read elsewhere that they are prone to failure at around 60,000. It is more of a preventative measure as I do not know the milage of the engine installed. I am sure that it is less than the rest of the bike as it just sounds so sweet and uses no oil at all. Although I get the occasional drip from the centre of the oil pressure switch, I'll replace it next service but I have also read elswhere that this is a common problem.
Comments:
The bike was off the road for a year before I bought it so I have had a few problems but most are sorted now. I have spent hours cleaning and polishing the thing and it is now looking good for an 19 year old bike. The bike is a joy to ride and handles well following the suspension refubishments mentioned above, it was bloody scarey before hand. I walk to work and I am sad to say that I almost wish I had to travel further so that I could ride the R65 more.

Problems: None
Comments:
Starts on the first try, settles down to a nice smooth idle, and keeps the battery nice and charged. Good, strong performance too. It does vibrate a bit at mid-range RPM, but smooths out very nicely at 5,000 RPM (so smooth it feels like you're gliding!). Over-all a pretty satisfying cycle.

Newly purchased from NJ. It sat for 14 years. I bought this as a wedding gift for my bride. She was too uncomfortable on my 86'K100RS. The R65 is great for 2-up riding. I mostly ride the K for commuting to work, about 88 miles a day. I just got the Gerbing's heated liners with sox and gloves. Let me tell you this is good stuff. I came to work on 11/22/00 at 5:30am. It was 15 degrees F with a 30mph cross wind. I was toasty warm at 70mph.

Accessories: Vetter Quicksilver fairing, Krauser hard bags, Ride-off center stand, Black Vinyl Tank Cover, Dual horns, Bob's BMW sidestand
Modifications: None.
Problems: Carbeurator tended to race to high RPMs when hot. Rebuilt carbs and replaced original diaphragms. Seems to have solved problem, although it tends to idle at a slightly higher RPM when hot, but does slowly drop back down to regular idle. Side stand was weak, and had a bend which leaned the bike over too far. Replaced with Bob's model. Saves havng to use the ride-off center stand all the time.
Comments:
Great sport bike. Very maneuverable with the low R-engine cylinders. Mechanical items easily accessible. After sitting for over a year, bike fired right up. Gearing is such that R65 runs faster than my big cruiser. Built to cruise the Autobahn, no doubt.
For Sale: I don't ride much anymore. Am considering selling to a good new home. Price? about $2400. Needs someone who appreciates an R65. It has been taken care of for 21 years. Should not become just a cheap utility bike.

Original owner had all engine work done and had motorcycle painted Porsche Guards Red to replace original Silver paint. At this same time the wheels were also powder coated flat black to match the battery covers. This is an amazing bike especially considering it is 15 years old. Everything is in mint condition including the original 5,900 miles.
