Usage: 175 miles, Street/Sport.
Owner: Thom Chichester
Email to Thom Chichester
Location: n/a -- Woodbine, Md. USA
Accessories: Purchased with second generation ECU and steering damper.
Comments:
Still breaking it in. The more I ride it, the more I like it. Definately needs Heli Bars. And I'll probably spring for an aftermarket pipe. I've been running at Suzuki's recommended rpm limit, but the bike still screams. This is going to be fun.

Dark Green 1997 TL1000S (Updated: 1998.1.31)

Location: n/a -- Lynden, WA
Accessories: Yosh RS-3 Cannisters Tank Bra Ugly Steering Stabilizer
Modifications: Replacement ECU and all related adjustments (adjustments done 4 times!) Finally (after 7 months)the 3rd "generation" ECU
Problems: The dreaded 4k & under stumbles and occasional backfire. Hard cold starting (frequent backfiring when cold)
Comments:
A new $9000 motorcycle should function better than this! Suzuki says to "put miles on it" to seat the rings! Huh? Is it just me, or does this sound like a large load of fertilizer? I must admit that under throttle loads, this "does not suffer fools gladly". What a hoot! 11/17/97: After all I've been thru, being treated like a "hypochondriac", I'm rather tired of this. Anybody want to buy one? 1/31/98: I hope the new owner has a better experience than I did!

Usage: 2,100 miles, Street/Sport.
Owner: Carl Bennett
Email to Carl Bennett
Location: n/a -- Stillwater OK
Modifications: 3rd generation ECM Removed steering damper. As long as you hang on it is not a problem, does help in fast bumpy corners though.
Problems: Trouble w/ starting for the first 1k, now it's fine Had stumbles at first, now only occurs at fuel light ON condition.
Comments:
If you can get your hands on the diagnostic switch and the EFI tape from Suzuki you can deal with any fuel related problem!!

Modifications: Tuned suspension ECU fix Steering Damper
Problems: Two tip-overs in parking lot stalls Clutch slipping when rolled on between 5.5 and 7K in 4,5,6th gear. Shitty paint job on tank (same with my Gixxer) Very serious tankslapper when braking while going into a corner at ~100mph. Gritted my teeth - opened her up - and leaned hard. I consider myself lucky to have made it. Happened after the damper was installed. I am a WERA expert and have 37 years experience on and off track. Occasional misses up until 1000 miles. Chainguard bolt loosened and guard rubbed against chain. Lost front reflectors. Something leaked brown fluid onto left silencer. Clunks when going over steep bump in parking lot. Weave fixed by suspension tuning but still unstable in high speed turns if bummpy.

Modifications: Later design of clutch hub with Suzuki spring kit, (all replaced on warranty - 'cos it used to slip) The recall bits : Steering damper, ECM, Thermostat
Problems: Clutch Slip (see above). The single seat unit used to vibrate and damaged the top of the rear panels, these were replaced by Suzuki, the new panels have clear plastic pads on them. The battery had to be replaced after about 4 months as it no longer held a proper charge. No problems with the new one so far.
Comments:
I think its an excellent bike that has had far too much unwarranted bad publicity. I have done nearly 6000 miles in 6 months, and have not had any real handling problems. Sure it shakes its head now and then, but then, so did my CBR1000. My only real gripe is that it unhooks the rear too easily, but the tyres seem to have a huge effect on this. I have a set of HI-Sport Race 3's on it at the moment and although they have more grip than a very grippy thing on a grippy day, they make the rear end feel horrendously unstable whilst banked over, (compared to the old Metzelers). I hope some further suspension changes will fix that though. (A pillion actually improved things about 1000000% !)

Modifications: Powercommander module (3hp gain) Airbox Modification (3hp gain) Yosh RS3 stainless exhaust (10hp gain) 133 rear wheel hp on dyno at Bloomington Powersports!
Problems: The usual....Plug fouling when cold, oil dilution, slight surge at 4000 Dirty looks from harley owners when they hear a big twin coming only to realized they've been TLerrorized! I question my own sanity as I am actually begiing to like the looks of the solo tail....
Comments:
Never thought I would own a twin before this bike came out....Made the decision between TL and GSXR (1996 carb). I also own a GSXR but LOVE my TL!!!!. I question the need for the TL damper (keep in mind I also sport ride an H2...). I have dropped the forks 2mm and have never had a problem. I think the reason for the bad rep is because the the front end can get so light at relatively low revs. Ride a GSXR back to back with a TL on a tight road with lots of elevation changes and theres a night and day difference...TL wants to wheelie off of every rise while the gixer feels relatively planted. I've found the same holds true for corner exits on the throttle! Behavior is a lot closer on the track when you get the revs up on the GSXR...I might get brave and remove the damper this summer. Haven't tried it yet, but I heard a 180 rear lightens up the flickability...going to try on next set of rubber. Happy Duck Hunting!

Modifications: Rear tyre: Bridgestone Battlax 180/55x17 Replaced back with Pirelli Corsa - much better
Problems: Handling Clutch slipping from 7000RPM to 9500RPM Head shake at 200km/h in wind (steering damper fitted). Lately even with no wind, it simply does it under power, it picks it head up a bit and shakes it like a bull chasing flies off it's neck while running at 200 km/h - only funny afterwards Clutch slipping again at 6000km @ 7000RPM- 9000RPM
Comments:
The engine is awesome! and riding position very nice, but the bike has never felt confident even after numerous suspension setting according to the revised factory specs. (Don't try to take a pillion on a Sunday cruise, rather jog - this bike is strictly for solo riding Price R53,000
