Comments:
Re-call tank assy. installed 09/98 - gas - in - oil problem gone after 3800 mi./new ECU (water pump leak apparently went with it - linked to oil level??) on 2nd battery . now using motul petroleum 10w/40w - 2,000mi.intervals does'nt use any oil.Service manager sez I have an early production model - surprized that it's doing so well-- still an outstanding ride - good for all-'round use - dyno shows 110 w/PCII (up from 106) uses up a rear every season - front lasts 2 yrs. - Pirellis last longer than metzlers, stick just as well..

realy nice bike.ohlins rear damper makes a huge difference.dropped triple clamps 5 ml-helps turn in with no side fx.probably go to 180 rear tyre-they dont seem to last long!!.Holeshot motorcycles in takapuna set up the fueling for the pipes & filter-doesnt try to launch you off from closed throttle any more-much smoother.200 ish kms a tank when going hard but over 300 when cruising.

Accessories: 1)Scottoiler. This has been recently modified with a dual feed. The inside nozzle had to be cut back, because the centre hub on the rear wheel is quite large and doesn't leave a lot of room for the nozzle to rest against the rear sprocket. 2)Frame protecting mushrooms. 3)Viper oval cans. Loud enough for me! They come with noise reducing baffles, but these are crued and look pretty awful when in place.
Modifications: 1) Ohlins rear damper. Well worth getting. 2) Dynojet power commander PCII with mapping for the Vipers. Haven't tried it yet, but hopefully this will smooth out the low rpm jitters. 3) 180 width rear tyre, rather than the stock 190. Whoever said that the bike turns quicker is right. I'm going to try Dunlop 207s next, maybe the RRs.
Problems: 1)Original rear damper started making creaking noises after about 9 to 10,000 miles. Hence the Ohlins replacement. This turned out to be the cheapest option, bar a breakers (I think not). Much better tyre wear, even though suspension set-up is not my strongest point. Only problem now is that the spring is too soft and adjusting the preload without taking the shock off appears to be too much bother. 2)Fuel tank leak. The drain pipe that runs from the filler neck gutter, through the tank, to drain water, etc onto the ground split. This meant that fuel leaked onto the ground until I capped the bottom exit point of the tank. The warranty didn't cover this (Dutch import by the way), but had a new tank fitted for £150 by the dealer in Feb 2003. 3) Nearly lost the sidestand. Lost one bolt and only the micro-switch was keeping the second one in place. They've been replaced and are now regularly checked. 4) Valve stem seal failed in summer 2004 (front cylinder, exhaust valve), resulting in a good impression of Del Boy's van. Bike's been off the road ever since, but have stripped the bike and the seal's been replaced. Hopefully have it running again by the spring.
Comments:
Even though it's had a few problems (not as many as alot of owners have had), I love the bike. It pulls like a train and I've had no real handling problems. I've done several trackdays on it and loved every minute. It's not the most comfortable bike, but I have taken it to Italy and back without too much pain involved and lets face it, the bike's not designed for too much comfort anyway. I'm only 5'6" so my legs tend to get forced apart by the wide(ish) tank which is where the problem comes from. It's got snatchy fuel injection as standard and the usual stalling probs, but I've learnt to ride round it. Now I've got the Power Commander, I might get this sorted at last.

Owner: Gavin Gaynor

Location: Australia (Eastern) -- Wagga Wagga
Experience: 15 years road riding
Bikes Owned: 6
Accessories: Tank bra, grabrail, Bagster tankbag, paddock stand
Modifications: Stock mufflers debaffled by Andrew Mcnay in Melbourne. Racetech fork springs & Gold valves fitted 27/1/99. Goodridge braided brake lines, pads & discs. Tingate Racing highrise bars ($135). 79,601 kms fitted Bitubo spring/damper unit where original spring was. Pretty good value for $A900. Wow. What a difference. The original rotary damper has been removed and consigned to the dustbin of history, probably where it belongs. The grease-filled steering damper has also been removed, as it is no longer needed. The rotary damper can be improved with revalving, but if you can afford it do yourself a big, big favour and fit a Bitubo. Worth doing for the improvement in ride quality alone. Ridden hard over rough roads it is very stable & confidence inspiring.
Problems: All the usual- slipping clutch fixed with TLR unit, stalling fixed with ECU fitted under warranty. Riding in torrential rain it began running on one cylinder (intermittently!). Turned out to be a wet spark plug in the front cylinder, caused by a blocked drain hole from the plug recess (hornets). 15/12/02 74,180 kms- Well it's finally happened- the frame has cracked at the upper bolthole for the rear damper. Suzuki Australia will be supplying the new frame and also paying for the labour(12 hrs). 24/1/03- The beast is back! This frame appears to have a much better finish than the original. It was good to have the swingarm etc thoroughly cleaned as well.
Comments:
I love this bike! Much better machine now than when it was new. Has never used any oil. Not a bike for the timid or inexperienced. Will be keeping this one for a long time.

Accessories: Heli-Bars. Gel Grips (no more numb hands) Memory Faom Seat. DoubleBubble windscreen. Started riding with a throttle rocker and love it. Use the Tour Master Cortech integrated system. Works really well and has not damaged the paint (yet).
Modifications: Use a dremel and a lot of patience to cut the inner nipples out of the exaust cans. Made them much louder and deeper sounding. People say it sounds just like a Ducati. The Michelin Macadam Rear Tire is Terible So far - 5000k miles - Grips mediocre for street riding but its keeping its shape well even after many straight roads. Maybe try MEZ4 next time... If I live that long with this rear tire... I changed the fork oil after building a homemade spring compression tool. Made the job very easy! Finally got rid of the Macadam rear tire before it was wore out at 11,500 miles - (a lot of life for a "sport" tire). Even though it never let go on me, I never felt confident with it. But the Metzelers are awesome. The soft sidewalls really fit my style and builds a lot of confidence. Finally got around to remapping the FI. Dyno'd the HP. 108 stock, 118 after remap! Mileage also increased to 50+! Best modification to date! Love Metzeler tires. They work fantastic on the bike! MEZ4's grip better than the Pilot Sports!! Decided to go with a 180 on the rear. Seems okay. not a very dramatic difference. I also replaced the chain and sprockets at 24,000 miles. Went up two teeth in the rear, and kept the same size front sprocket. The change is perfect! It gives the bike a bit more pull out of the corners, making it more fun to ride, but it is not wheelie prone and very little change is made to the top end/cruising speed. Also the speedometer seems to have retained its accuracy. The Metzeler didn't last as long as I hoped, but wonderful handling! Details on the Ohlins upgrade availble at: http://www.canyonchasers.net/shop/tls/index.php
Problems: It steers a little heavier that I would like. The rear dampner is starting to dissapoint me. I keep turning up the rebound dampning and the bike still handles poorly in corners over 100mph. The adjustments help, but don't eliminate the problem. I may have to upgrade this component. The rear suspension linkage is starting to squeak constantly (and loudly) when I'm riding. Would like to find a way to solve this. Tried Penetrating oil around all the joints, but no luck. Finally disassembled and repacked the needle bearings in the linkage with white lithium grease. The bearings were totally dry! Bike is only one year old! But the grease solved the problem. This winter I think I'll repack the swingarm bearings. I does go through rear tires, however.
Comments:
Its much more graceful bike in corners than many other sources have claimed. Really looking forward to improving upon cornering abilities. The engine that just keeps giving and giving. Never have I enjoyed a bike as much as this one. Still love this bike. I can't think of one I'd replace it with. Friend who rode my bike then the Ducati 996 couldn't say enough about how much more fun the TLS was. I just replaced the rear tire and installed a 180 M-1. The rear tire is awesome but wears out really fast. The 180 seems to allow for a quicker turn-in. I am now considering putting a lighter weight oil in the steering damper. At 25K miles, Clean and straighten the Radiator and clean all the road grime/Oil off the bike. Its amazing how fast and thick it accumulates.

Problems: Gearbox has seized on me. 70 mph, in the dark in April 04. Did not drop the bike! Friends on www.tlplanet.com took pity on me and supplied me with a gearbox to fit. Will be doing this ASAP, presently I have no garage, so not able to do the job.

Fookin 'ell, 11000 miles and it wants to rear up on the back wheel at WOT in 1st and 2nd. Can't say I'm disappointed.. Seems to be gettin madder as the miles go on. Will wheelie in second off the throttle. Rear MEZ1 replaced@2200 miles. Front looks worn@2300miles. Dropped it in the CP at work and did £700 worht of damage. BOllox. Dunlop D207's are the best mod yet.
For Sale: I want to trace this bike. Sold it in 2002 to a bloke from Milton Keynes called Preston. I now wown another TLS, 97, in red. Gearbox has blown on that. No garage to rebuild it in, so bought a 95 Gixer for now. If you know where the bike is, V 425 DHR, please let me know!

6.5 years ago when they we're new I couldn't afford one. this summer I bought from Basingstoke UK a perfect one owner original minter, in green, 5055kms - folk can't believe it's not new. I will keep it in this condition and enjoy. Massive smiles for £3100!!!! My brother has a 916 in the same nick and struggles to keep up. On final thing - th emax speed limit on Guernsey is 35mph - so lots of dobbies spent on the ferry trips to old blighty!!
