Accessories: Bike came with seat hump, fairing lowers, ART race cans and very small numberplate.
Modifications: Use loud exhausts occasionally and taken off the horrible steering damper. Last back tyre was mez3 190 now using d207 180 which I find much improved.
Problems: All the usual recalls were done before I bought the bike. 1'st service the dearler said the top end rattle was too bad and needed investigating. He had the bike 2 weeks ish managed to get 4 new cams from suzuki FOC and even got his labour paid for. Not bad for a bike out of warranty and not even sold by him. Sounds a bit quieter now.
Comments:
I really like the bike and with new tyres it handles ok.
For Sale: Bike now sold and replaced with SV1000s. For sale Black seat hump £50, Double bubble dark tint screen £30 and ART carbon race cans with brackets £100 all ono. Email if interested.

Modifications: Endless fiddling with the suspension. I changed the headlight dip to the UK side (and the 57 other countries which drive on the non-Napoleon side) It was quite easy, and details can be mailed to any one who needs this doing. Mine can be converted back in about 30 secs for riding abroad. Being unwilling to pay for a new set of cans, I have just modified the stock ones by drilling a 25 mm hole inside each one. The sound is much more manly but I will drill another when I have time. If you look in the engine end there is a plate across the silencer. I drilled this with a hole saw on an extension arbor. If you drill in the 10 o'clock position it lines up with the perforated outlet pipe and daylight can be seen. (A Good Thing) Note: both cans are the same hand inside. As the cans weigh a portly 3420 grams each, I may try to rip out all of the redundant internals. What can you do if you remove the end plate with the 3 welded socket screws? Will the insides come out? UPDATE: I have at last found some time to tear the much maligned damper apart. It was quite an easy job to remove the unit and retire with it to the kitchen. The damper comes apart easily apart from needing a good quality allen key or an impact driver to get the socket screws out. It was not possible to test the nitrogen pressure inside as the volume is so tiny, but my electronic tyre gauge, which has a very small internal volume, showed 62 psi the first time and 24 the second go so it must have been over 100 to start with. The internal arrangement is not as portrayed in the diagram from the article in RIDE magazine and reprinted on the net. I have redrawn the schematic and will try to post it when I have time along with a more detailed description of the mods and an appraisal of the effects when I have got some more miles (and humps and Derbyshire potholes) under the wheels. I also have some VGA quality photos of the unit in bits. The nitrogen presses against a nylon piston in a bore which has the damping oil on the other side of it. The piston is always on the 'low pressure' side of the circuit whether in compression or rebound, unlike the RIDE diagram. I assume that the gas pressure has no effect on the damping, but allows tiny volume changes to take place as the damper moves, which would otherwise cause an hydraulic lock to occur. I have pumped it up with air from a foot pump for the time being. I have removed 2 of the 3 0.3mm shims from the compression valve, and 2 of the 5 shims from the rebound valve, having looked at the test rig graphs from the RIDE article which show (as my butt knows) that the comp damping was far in excess of the rebound whatever the adjustment of the brass needle valves. Then, ignoring Rule 1 of Fault Finding and Development which states that only one thing at a time should be altered, I changed the taper on the needles so that they came to a point, while leaving the base diameter the same. I also changed the oil from something around about SAE 20 to Silkolene Fork Oil SAE 5. Basically I was looking to have the unit under-damped with the needle valves open perhaps one turn, so that I could experiment with the oil viscosity to get it into a useable range. Refilling the unit is a bit of a bugger, because of all the internal drillings, but I took some sequential digital photos of the orientation of the unit so that I could tip the unit around and get the air out to the bleed holes. It was a bit fiddly and I can only assume that in the factory the unit is evacuated and the oil is sucked in. (There are two fill holes with 8mm X 0.1 thread plugs) NOTE: Before anyone as daft as me decides to tear their damper apart, there are a couple of traps for the unwary on assembly, so drop me a line first. ALSO, DON'T MOVE THE DAMPER ARM BY HAND past it's usual range of movement before you have looked inside because the seals will pass over a hole in the chamber and will be sliced off. (Voice of experience...). IMPORTANT BIT: with the comp. adjustment turned out 2 turns, and the rebound out 1 turn, the damping feels fine to my ageing squigey arse bearing in mind that I am not a suicidal, snake the back end out of corners type of rider, but I do know what feels right and what doesn't. I need a few more outings around the Peak District to assess it properly, but it really does feel fine. With the adjusters screwed right in,(when they pass no oil) the damping feels as bad as it did before (bouncing up and down on the seat, watching the swing arm movement) so I am not convinced that removing some of the springs in the damping valve has done anything at all. Aug 2003: Still totally happy with the damper, it runs a lot cooler now and I assume also puts less strain on the frame mountings, so less chance of a breakage. I must do something about the bars as I now have an inflamed tendon on the back of my hand (my mother told me that I would...) and a recent trip to Kemble was agony below about 85, so I went on the Fosse and stayed at 90 ;). I had a disaster with the sidestand and the whole plot fell over for the 3rd time (once when some kids climbed on it in Bolsover, pity it didn't squash the little bastards) The tank was badly dented were it hit a wall, but I'm having grief finding a spare one in the matching 'orange'. Any ideas welcomed.
Problems: The steering damper makes the bike dangerous to ride because it removes all feel from the road and actually destroys the castoring at small steering angles. I threw it off and it hasn't thrown me off yet. The TPS and throttle sync is so important on this motor; done properly, by yourself so you know how well it has been done, it transforms it from a stumbling monster to a sweet little hooligan.
Comments:
As said before in these pages, it is a shame that Suzuki seem to have abandoned this bike and its few foibles. If anyone has torn their damper to pieces I would be glad of any forwarnings.

Problems: Touch wood no real problems!!! It did have a problem of surging at low revs but remapping cured that

Accessories: Tank bra don't use it! Double Bubble Windscreen.
Modifications: K&N airfilter.Just bought Hindle 2-1-2 system and Powercommander.(Let you know how that all turns out)Steel bradied brake lines. Air Box mod. Hindle system is UNREAL!!(LOUD & LIGHT)Dropped forks 5mm. Remove grates over Srad intakes. May be time for some Head work. Ohlins shock on its way! 39 tooth rear sprocket. Installed 1mm oversized exhaust valves. Head cleaned up casting flaws and polished throttle bodies. Air box top cut off plastic welded sides to fit up to bottom of gas tank(can't get any more volume than that!) Painted wheels black. Made my own TRE mod cost $6 well worth it! Thinner oil in stock steering dampner.
Problems: Low rpm sputter and surging at steady throttle. Fixed with recalled ecm. False neutral between 5th and 6th. The powercommander has to be in the bike while maps are uploaded from a computer.(not a prob. for you rich people with a spare computer in your garage) Rotary Dampner SUCKS!!! Clutch cover leak replaced with newer unit.
Comments:
Love the bike, hate the fuel inj. problems! Much better with new ecm. But feels alittle less punchy. Got the Hindle pipe. Just installed it. It was harder to install than the pipe on my F3. Lots of springs but over all quality is great. The powercommander was so easy to install.(If you can't figure it out don't worry there is alittle video for you on the cd rom supplied with the unit) Sucks to adjust with a computer. But other than that no prob. Just fired the bike up for first time with new exhaust. Amazing Sound!!! Came up with my own air box mod(put alot of thought into it). Email 4 more info. Got some nice weather finally!!! This bike rips gonna dyno it in Mid-Ohio. All mods were a big pay off. I inhale the road it's awesome! Now to improve the handling!!DYNOED at 123.7HP was running alittle rich. Well shock is on the way along with some new sprockets and chain. I also have a double bubble wind screen on the way. Should improve this riding season!! Let you know how it all turns out. Holy Shit all the engine mods rock!! Little trouble getting the fuel inj. right with the new airbox mod. I'm dynoing this weekend let you know how it goes! Well I got some interesting results on the dyno run. Same Dyno as last time but Temp and elevation was different on my print out. Anyway I made 125.6 hp about 2 more on top. The dyno guy said I was lean on top. I made 5hp more from the same starting point 10hp more in the mid range it seems like more on top than just 2hp.(I'll email you the graphs if you really want to see them). From my stand point I got to really test the TL against my buddies TL.(97 also) I now really out accelerate him and I can pass him easily at top end even if he gets on the gas first. All in all I'm pretty happy with my bike. I going to build tis thing. Cams, pistions, rods crank. fill u in when it's done!
For Sale: Make an offer if you want the rotary dampner

Problems: Right hand engine cover leaking oil. Stumbles every now and then at low idle. The Suzuki dealer said there was a recall for the cover and Suzuki will cover it under warranty only. Suzuki said the leaking oil was not a "safety" issue. I don't know too many riders that like oil getting on the back tire.

Problems: A few outer gaskets failed on the original 1997 engine. Biggest problem was the recent failure of the final drive bearing, which resulted in heavy gearbox damage and a huge crack in the crankcases! The 1997 engine has a narrower bearing than later models. Don't use fully synthetic oil in any bike! It doesn't lubricate/protect the gearbox as well as semi-synthetic oil. You probably won't notice any problems if your bike is under 3 years old, but sooner or later, you will encounter problems! I have recently fitted a 2001 engine and she now runs as sweet as a nut! Like new!
