Problems: FI stutter @ 3500. 2Bros C4 can was empty and LOUD. Repacked 1000 miles ago, and it is getting louder already.
Comments:
A prior owner traded this in to lease a Hayabusa. He said it has had a FI remap, and dyno'd at 118hp, with tire slippage. I am taping off radiator to raise temps until I complete the thermostat plumbing and sender upgrade.

Problems: Cold starting problems as the TL is known for, plug fouling . front brakes chatter with bad vibration. Also has the few problems we all known to see with the early 1997 TLS.
Comments:
First ...I love the bike , ask any TL owner and they will tell you that it will put a big smile on your face , no other jap bike can hit the gas and come out of a turn as nice as the TL can , this bike can wheelie in any gear , the sound with the after market exhaust is crazy , The Tl can turn heads and will be a bike for the history books ! If you have one , dont sell it , they will not make a bike like this anymore.

Accessories: NWS Carbon Fibre Hugger & RADGUARD radiator cover.
Modifications: April 2002;-"Double-bubble" screen fitted, can now see top of instruments ! *Ohlins rear shock fitted May 2001, wish I'd done it earlier:- better feedback, more reliable line through the corners, more confidence on my part. Looks like it's gives longer tyre life, also. *HyperPro steering damper fitted in March 2001. Note:- if you have Heli-bars fitted, you need to make up 2 spacers. *New ECU/thermostat fitted by dealer on 22 Oct 1997 No problems between 3 & 4000 anymore. Temp now 71 deg C, instead of 57 deg C. *St/St Goodrich hoses fitted to front brake. Lever travel reduced, a little more feedback. Forks raised in yokes by just 6mm, seems to be more neutral at entry point to corners. * June '99 ;- Fitted 180/55 MEZ3 now even more easy to turn in on the twisty stuff. JAN 2000;- * Seat foam modified(added some holes), to make more compliant.*Heli-bars fitted, no more painful wrists or pins and needles in the right hand. August 2007: Fitted iridium spark plugs. Wow wish I'd done it years ago; Engine is much smoother below 4000RPPM, it will even pull from 1500RPM in 3rd
Problems: September 2002:- Fuel leaking from the usual place again, and this is with the new tank fitted under the recall ! June 2002:- Oil leak from clutch cover, fitted new type from TL1000SW, seems to be oil-tight now. With the old cover, the metal sleeves protrude though and stop the O-ring being compressed properly. New cover has plastic sleeves. The new O-ring seems a little thicker also. Another item Suzuki should have recalled the bike for;- Oil all over the rear tire is no joke ! *Oct 2000:- Side stand fell off ! Bolt only retained by micro-switch.* September 2000, replacement petrol(gas) tank leaking from pump/filter housing. Ordered new gasket, took one month. Wrote to Suzuki GB, they replied after 6 weeks, told me to F. off, so will NEVER buy other Suzuki ! *May 2000:Exhaust pipe cracked around weld, near silencer. Had it welded locally. * New tank and new clutch(to eliminate slip) both fitted under warrantee, but lever action heavier. July 2006: Fuel leaking from the water drain pipe(the one starts by the fuel filler and that runs right through the tank), so got a replacement tank from e-bay
Comments:
Serious fun bike, that still puts a grin on yer face, even after 9 years ! But since getting an Aprilia ETV-1000, it's now mainly used for mad dashes and track days. No handling problems, now the Ohlins rear shock is set up, and the rear tyre does exactly what is was supposed to do! Pity Suzuki ever allowed it to be launched with that rotary damper, it would not have got the bad press and would have sold in greater numbers!

Bikes Owned: 3
Accessories: Built my own rear maintenance stand from a bunch of 1" square aluminum tubing that I got for free. Used inline skate wheels for the rollers. Bolted it all together and it works great.
Modifications: Didn't like the stiffness and low speed steering effort from the stock steering damper so under consultation with my Suzuki dealer, I removed it. Steering is now effortles and high speed stability is still great. March, 2003 - K&N Air Filter. Grab-On Foam Grips. April, 2004 - Homemade magnetic belt buckle and knee pads for my tank. They have a Carbon Fiber overlay and look and work great to protect the tank. I actually put them on last summer and am just updating now. July, 2005 - Back to stock Suzuki TL Grips. A Throttle Rocker for over a year now. What a great little gizmo! Sigma BC 800 computer for more accurate speed. Thank you Dave from www.canyonchasers.net . Sept. 2005 - A buddy at work said that my bike was too quiet and suggested opening up the exhaust a bit. I had heard of a simple technique of removing the end covers and simply drilling three evenly spaced holes around and close to the exhaust stack. This is supposed to give some free flow and a little more sound. I had been told 3/8" holes but didn't want to go too big for noise and tried 1/4" holes instead. With all bolted back on and tested out, I was pleased with the increases both for tone and flow and am leaving it at that.
Problems: Engine buzz in the throttle grip numbs my hand nearly dead after about 50 kms. The same to a lesser degree for my left hand. A set of Gel Grips helps out with the buzz. March, 2003 - The Gel Grips helped some, but still not enough, so this year it gets the Grab-On Foam Grips. April, 2004 - The foam grips helped a lot. The best help of all came in the form of advice. "Grip with your knees, unlock your elbows, and take the weight off your wrists." As soon as I tried this I found my whole riding style altered. No more numb hands and I could ride like this all day (if I had any place to go that took that long). I had always been afraid of scratching my tank with my knees, so hadn't even thought of this. Thanks to a kind Triumph dealer in Regina, Saskatchewan who took time to listen. July, 2005 - Now that I've learned how to straddle this beast properly(see previous)it's back to stock Suzuki TL Grips. No problems.
Comments:
I really like this bike! Great straight line stability (not many twisties out here on the Canadian Prairies). Awesome torque, can't get over the roll on power this thing has. Just the one problem as mentioned with the throttle buzz. March, 2003 - The roads in Saskatchewan are not the smoothest and I found the stock suspension settings too rigid. I checked out the TL1000S/faq page on this site for advice and came up with settings that work for me. Front: Preload - 6 turns out; Compression - 1&1/2 turns out; Rebound - 3/4 turns out. Rear: Preload - Factory setting; Compression - 4&1/2 turns out; Rebound - 2&3/4 turns out. Maybe this will help someone else who doesn't like to buck over bumps. July, 2005 - Finally wore the rear tire down to the quick. Putting on a Metzeler Sportec M-1 as the best match for the Mez1A on the front. Sept. 2005 - After about 2000 kms. of riding with the new rear tyre, I would have to say that Metzeler has a very good product in the Sportec M-1. It has better feel and turn-in than the old Mez-1 it replaced.
For Sale: Feb. 2007 - As of this date, SOLD along with all my riding gear to a young fellow that used to work with me. I hope he has as much pleasure riding as I did. Severe Osteo-arthritis has taken that away from me.
