Modifications: Chopped rear fender, dash mount clock), Painted rims and number plates now are in a yellow/with pearl green pigment. and other stuff as above.
Problems: O.K. I love this bike the torque the sound the torque. The tank was replaced (leaking at seal), the computer (stumbling and stalling), replaced the clutch cover gasket (leaking), plug caps shorting out, but the big one is the frame had cracked two times (Where the damper unit bolts to the frame) Suzuki keeps replacing the frame no charge to me, but also with no solutions. UP DATE..... Ohlins shock fixes it.... works great, Do it........
Comments:
The 16 tooth sprocket makes good changes to the power, less clutch to get it moving. seems able to rev out a little higher in top gear. TRE is a good mod as well it changes the power in the lower gears.....Suspention, brakes, damper, Foot controls, all great mods not cheep but well worth it!

Comments:
I owned small Yamaha V-Twin in early 80's,so I had exposure to twins. It was fun sort of fast and I could even "tour" on it,but there aint no replacement for displacement!!!!!!!!!! This has got to be the most fun bike I have owned,I've owned a few but ridden almost everything out there from A-Z. When I heard of it I knew I had to own one.It was 14 years scince I bought a new bike and I have not been dissappointed at all, even after seeing the R model I like my hooligan bike!

green 1997 TL1000S (Updated: 2006.4.8)

Tires: Bridgestone
Owner: Jim Moy           Phone: (414) 272-7255
Email to Jim Moy
Location: USA (NorthCentral) -- Milwaukee WIsconsin
Experience: 35 years
Bikes Owned: 20
Accessories: Heli bars, Yellow box, Yosh remap, Scott oiler (on trips) & Suzuki gel seat.
Modifications: My TL has had all the U.S. recalls, (Steering damper, Third generation ECM, New gas tank). Switched to synthetic oil at 3500 miles, Installed 40 tooth rear sprocket at 3900 miles, Removed steering damper at 4000 miles (made steering too heavy,) installed K & N air filter and removed airbox flapper valve.
Problems: Rising oil level during first 1800 miles, Minor stalling and stumbling with second ECM, Minor rattling in upper fairing, Front brakes clunk, Half tank bra for TL collects more debris than on other bikes, Awful gas mileage with old ECM (25 to 30 mpg), Stock bars and seat uncomfortable after 2 to 3 hundred miles of riding, At 3900 miles the bike had a electrical short near the turn signal relay and was blowing fuses, Luckily I found the short quickly thanks to Larry Moore and the TL mailing List, Air box seems to collect lots of debris. UPDATE 4/06: Clutch went bad at 11,000 miles. Replaced with Suzuki HP clutch and Barnett springs. No problems since except for slightly heavy pull. Around 20,000 I got the other notorious electrical short by the steering head. I was at the Gap when it happened. Frame cracked both front and rear in Fall of 03 around 29,000 miles. Suzuki replaced the frame Spring 04. Rear shock went bad last summer.
Comments:
The TL is much easier to ride fast in the corners than my old cycle, (90 FZR1000) but it consumes gas and tires faster too. I haven't had any real problems with my bike except for the short. My bike is very stable and can ride no hands with or without damper. I've ridden other TL's that oscillate when you release the handle bars. I'm running without a damper now and the bike is quite stable. Gas mileage is better with new ECM, 35 mpg and 40 mpg if I drive like an old lady. No more stalling or stumbling with new ECM. When new ECM was installed idle went up 150 rpm? Best sport bike I've ever owned and is a absolute scream to ride, I love it. I can power wheelie in first, second or third and have ridden into fourth gear on one wheel. This bike is great for balancing wheelies. The 40 tooth sprocket makes leaving from a stop easier and accelerates much faster, I highly recommend this mod. Heli bars and gel seat are way more comfortable. There is a camaraderie among TL owners that I didn't have with my other bikes. UPDATE 4/06: Most of my TL friends have traded them for other bikes. Some of them are understandably disappointed with the TL's reliability. The TL is no longer the bomb it once was. Almost any current inline four will out perform it. Though I have had my share of problems my bike's engine still runs strong at 39,000 miles. The bike still has the original chain and battery. I also never had the gas tank, clutch cover and water pump seal leaks that all my friends had. One of my friends used to always joke and say I had the best TL ever made. I've had my share of problems but I still like to ride the bike. When I bought this bike new my goal was to get 50,000 miles out of it. Now it seems strange that it's just around the corner.

Problems: Leaking Clutch cover, repaired by replacing gasket,Replaced Fairing with race fibre glass Copy, much lighter and simpler, caused by hitting a Kangaroo at 110 Kmh {65 Mph}, managed to keep hold of bike and pull it up, speedo, headlight and fairing was smashed to pieces but rest of the bike was salvageable, stupid part was that i was not insured, fixed it now and better than new,one Problem taht didnt exist is the tank Slapper that i have heard so so much bad reports about, i ride some real rough aussie roads out here where i live and its never miss behaved, but i still laugh at the nickname- HEAD SHAKER HEART BREAKER- Ha I had a bad Problem on Decelleration under no Throttle in which it would back fire and shoot Wicked Blue Flames, nice for a while but sick of it now, sounds like a fucked harley,Re saeled gasket under rear cylinder head, no more backfires just a nice V twin purr
Comments:
These machines are a cult bike, there the kind of bike the owners fall in love with, with the nut case bottom end grunt and the never ending wheelies holding a drivers licence is gettin hard, i break the law each and every time i ride it, ill never sell it now, i just sold my HSV Holden ute that had approx 450 bhp at engine so now the TL is my daily ride,i love it, Also would love to get my hands on the TL Engined Barracuda, On my Win lotto Wish list QUESTION= Where do i Look to inspect The frame for cracking that i have heard reports about. Please Drop me a Email brentonchrimes@yahoo.com.au Cheers

Bikes Owned: 60+
Accessories: double bubble screen, hugger apart from that pretty much standard, for now! ART CANS NOW FITTED WHICH ARE VERY LOUD-EXCELLENT!!
Modifications: Rear mudguard cut away and indicators fitted onto the bungee clips- they fit very neatly in them and it saves leaving un-necessary plastic on guard Am on lookout for fairing lowers and also some loud cans so if any spare, please e-mail me.
Problems: Leaking clutch cover which was quickly and easily cured by fitting washers behind securing screws- this has the effect of pulling the cover down over the metal spacers that the screws pass through and therefore creates a tight oil leak free seal. Poor running on light throttle, this was due to the butterflys being out of synch which cleared after balancing by local suzook mechanic.Tankslappers a plenty on hard throttle but I do not have a damper fitted yet. Only other prob is that of rapid tyre wear and fuel consumption but I gather all TL owners experience this!!
Comments:
Had lots of other sports bikes, Blade, GSXR 11, GSXR750's, etc but this one beats them all for all round good blasting. Cracking bike and well recommended if you like loads of bottom end grunt. CAN ANYONE ENLIGHTEN ME ON AIRBOX MODS,PLEASE EMAIL ME.

I'll give more details on mods later and will be selling some stuff (fairing, etc) later, but for now could anyone tell me if the swing arm from a TL1000R will fit the TL1000S?
