RED 1999 TL1000S-W (Updated: 2000.2.1)

Usage: 3,500 miles, Street/Sport.
Tires: METZELER - MEZ1
Owner: Andy Purchon
Email to Andy Purchon
Location: UK -- Wakefield
Experience: 4 years
Bikes Owned: 2
Accessories: Carbon fibre tank pad, rear hugger and front fenda-extenda. Stainless steel 'Quill' end-cans. Suzuki lower fairing to come for the winter. Very small number plate c/o those very nice roadside cameras!
Modifications: Shorter rear damper bolt to lower the rear end and make the thing slightly less nose heavy. Front preload set to '2 rings' setting and the compression set to one full revolution from maximum so as to dial out po-going whilst fast, tight cornering, it was too soft at the front and the transfer of power between rear and front was a bit worrying, its now hard as nails but much more stable. Slightly increased the front rake to make the steering more stable. Steering damper fitted as standard anyway but the above points solve it for my 14 stone(196lb) frame (fully leathered up).
Problems: With the end cans it hunts around for fuel at low revs. Remapping may be the answer. A slightly taut chain tension can make it very snatchy at low speed. Rear seat hump scratching the paint work, fixed by screwing lemonade bottletops onto the black bungs, this raised the hump about 3-4mm and made it miss the paintwork, you have to force down those tops though..its works and who can see 'em!
Comments:
A fantastic overall package. I did nearly 800 miles in one day in August and it was brilliant, apart from my old knees! Had a reputation in the UK for being a widowmaker but the 1999 bike is just ace.

Problems: 3k - 4k Stumbles. Cured with new ECU. Smileage has increased greatly. Oil coming out the weep-hole, found that the impeller was also broken off of the shaft.
Comments:
The Lindemann suspension work is incredible. The bike sits taller, because of correct preload, flicks quicker, and is more controllable. No tankslappers since the damper was installed. Kuel ride, the most fun I've had with the rubber side down.

Green 1997 TL1000S (Updated: 2000.1.30)

Owner: Andrew Peek           Phone: (604) 527-8555

Location: Canada (Western) -- Maple Ridge, BC
Experience: 20 years riding dirt and street, 3 years racing motocross
Bikes Owned: 28
Accessories: Tank bra, electric vest, Hindle exhaust
Modifications: Dealer re-programmed EFI for smoother throttle response. Dealer installed replacement tank and steering damper on recall.
Problems: A few. I have not experienced any clutch slippage, or fuel leaking to the oil, however I have been changing oil frequently so maybe just haven't noticed. The bike has stalled a couple of times decellerating to a stop, and I have had some oil seeping from clutch cover and around drain plug. Also the bike seems to run a little hot in stop and go traffic. It doesn't take long for the fan to kick in and cool things down a bit on warm days, but I don't live in a particularly hot climate. More of a gripe than a problem, but I find the bars a little low, and the tank-seat-pegs a little confining. Although at 6'-2" I feel a bit crunched up on most sport bikes. I also have trouble with keeping the front wheel on the ground, and with not going into the garage to look at it in the middle of the night, and with neighbours when I warm it up early on Sunday morning.
Comments:
Love the mean aggresive looks of this motorcycle, and with the Hindle pipes it sounds like a day at the races. But as good as it looks, and as cantankarous as it sounds, the power is the best feature. This thing wheelies as easily as a dirt bike. The motor has the torque of a twin, but winds up like four cylinder. Awesome. It is not without a few quirks though to add some character to the mix. A few mechanical annoyances, a stumble or two, abrubt throttle response, and less than comfy ergos. Still, a great bike, but I will be looking into some Heli-bars (I must be getting old)
