Black 1997 TL1000S (Updated: 1998.4.1)
Usage: 2,625 miles, Street/Sport.
Owner: Martin Hull
Email to Martin Hull
Location: n/a -- Australia
Accessories: Indigo high rise system with carbon cans Carbon fibre hugger, tank bra, heel protectors & front guard NWS grab rail
Modifications: Warranty steering damper Replaced ECU Modified clutch Removable pillion pegs for high rise system
Problems: Low rev stalling seems cured by new ECU. Still doesn't like starting from cold. Steering damper fitting is pain & adds half an hour to get to motor as you,ve got to pull it all off to lift the tank. SW model mount is far better! Mucho clutch slip cured by adding thicker plates & beefing up clutch springs. Clutch design appears pretty ordinary!
Comments:
Overall a good bike, great motor & acceptable handling. Pity the bugs weren't ironed out before it was released for sale.

Problems: Has the "stumble", haven't nailed down the exact RPM yet. Somewhere between 2500-3700, and have to remember to "ride around it".
Comments:
My first V-twin sportbike and what a hoot! With over 20 years of nothing but inline fours this bike is a fantastic ride! Just can't wait to get it broke in and see how it really performs.

Black 1997 TL1000S (Updated: 1998.3.28)
Usage: 3,750 miles, Street/Sport.
Owner: Jay Henry
Email to Jay Henry
Location: n/a -- Perth, Wertsern Australia
Accessories: Locally made (Roo Racing) carbon cans. Goodrich kevlar brake lines. Dark tinted screen. Single seat unit.
Modifications: Replaced pathetic 'pushbike-type" steering head bearings with tapered needle rollers, over the counter NTN items. They go straight in and steering stability is 200% better. Have fun getting lower bearing race off stem though.
Problems: Fuel leakage under tank. Dealer says tank is cracked from overtightened flange bolts and is ordered me a new one. Old one is temporarilaly fixed. New ECM fitted but still ccasionally dies and oil level rises. Front wheel seems to rise uncontrollably under heavy accelleration in first and second.

Modifications: Two Brothers Slip Ons...loud but cool. New Computer Module (Suzuki fix)
Problems: Purchased with 1200mi...as I drove off the lot I turned right back around and headed for service...they replaced the computer and now it's much, much better under 4k...but who stays there :-) 1. returned for new ECU and oil leak from clutch cover. 2. returned 2nd time for coolant leak from 'weep' hole. 3. returned 3rd time for shock bolt that backed out and fell into chain, and oil leaking from 'weep' hole and the clutch cover. 4. returned 4th time for oil leeking from 'weep' hole. *getting the idea this oil leek is beyond them. (SD House of motorcycles)
Comments:
Thanks to this bike: 1. I'm getting much better at wheelies 2. I get to work REALLY fast 3. I get home from work Even Faster 4. I'm going to be spending lots of money on tires the rear is almost dead at 3000mi 5. I have been without it for over a month due to oil leeks. This bike kicks ass! I'm going to take a racing school class this spring and hopefully get lots of track time with my new "toy".

Problems: I NOTICED THAT I OCCASIONALLY GET A LOW RPM STUMBLE WHEN I HIT THE THROTTLE, IT IS STILL IN THE BREAK-IN STAGE SO I'M NOT REALLY CONCERNED(YET). I HAS HAD ALL OF THE RECALL UPDATES DONE TO IT(ECM, STEERING DAMPNER).FINDING NEUTRAL TOOK A LITTLE MORE EFFORT THAN I EXPECTED.
Comments:
I FOUND IT TO BE A LITTLE HARD ON THE WRISTS AROUND TOWN, ESPECIALLY MY CLUTCHING HAND,BUT ONCE I GOT INTO THE TWISTY STUFF I FORGOT ALL ABOUT MY WRISTS, AND I THEN REALIZED WHAT THE BIKE WAS MADE FOR, I FOUND IT TO HANDLE & CORNER VERY NICELY. I ONLY PUT FIFTY MILES ON IT THE DAY I GOT IT ,BECAUSE IT WAS PRETTY FREAKIN COLD OUT, AND IT HAS BEEN RAINING SINCE(AAAHH)! I WILL HAVE MORE INPUT ON THE BIKE ONCE I RIDE IT MORE,ESPECIALLY AFTER THE BREAK IN PERIOD!! ITS BEEN HARD SO FAR TO KEEP IT UNDER 5000RPM

Goes great! Seems to eat tyres!! Didn't turn as quickly as my YZF750SP, but lighter steering damper oil cewrtainly helped a lot WELL I'M OUT OF HERE - I've traded in both my TL1000S and my YZF750SP for a 10 month old Ducati 748SP. Its absolutely awesome and better than all the others - best wishes to all you TL1000 owners!!!!

Had an R model on order, but delivery kept getting moved out (now is June/July) and I couldn't wait. Coming off a Kawie Concours I can't believe how well this thing does corners. Of course the riding position is a little hard on the wrists. Love the power and torque, it's going to be a great summer.

Accessories: I want a replacement for that butt-ugly marmaduke nose. anybody know where to find a decent looking aftermarket piece? I dont want a completely new tailsection, just a new cover. I like having the storage space, just not the "marmy nose"
Modifications: 1. removed part of ugly black plastic, that lic. plate mounts to. 2. put shortstalk 2 lockhart phillips turn sig's, on rear, to clean up looks.
Problems: no leaks yet, Knock on wood! just the same erratic stumble occasionally, but cured mostly by latest ECU. sometimes takes 2-3 tries to get her going when cold. no-slip clutch YET! buying time I guess. scratches around where "marmaduke nose" fits against tailsection. fixed that w/ clear thick tape. bolt loosened on chain guard, came out, chain guard rubbed tire, ate it up, she's gone! threw it away! no gas in oil yet, got my eyes peeled. I must be really lucky! or it is all going to happen at once? pitty that day!
Comments:
good bike, no slappers encountered, before or aft, recall st. damper. seems stable and planted. I think 3rd gen. ECU might have robbed some H.P though. just a seat-of-the-pants impression, I could be wrong. Interested in aft.mkt Power modules. anybody got some info as to effectiveness? Also interested in 2-1 exhaust, do they sound diff? and what do they do to the power-curve, seems like they would give less flow. Definately lightest set-up though. Word to the wise: lower the gearing, its way tall in stock config. go at least to a 40tooth rear spkt. or drop 1tooth on countershaft. liven's her up a bit! Has tons more torque than even my 95'RR, 96'GSXR, felt like a 400 down low, after getting off TL. LOVE that Torque! a little RPM goes a long way.

Comments:
I bought it as a German inport into the UK from my existing Honda dealer, for the last 3 months I have been trying to obtain this thermostat and EMC change, however I am told that this is not an official import in Germany so I have to wait until the German dealer ahs spares. Anyone out there who knows better ?
