Experience: 11 years road riding
Bikes Owned: 20+
Accessories: rear hugger earls stainless hoses front and rear
Modifications: none as yet
Problems: none at all, other than slight lumpiness at lowish revs which I know from experience is commom to practically all kwaks (worked in the bike trade for five years)
Comments:
probably the most underrated bike of the last ten years; comfy, practical, has more soul in its handlebars alone than a hundred Fireblades, awesome sound and BRAIN-BLEEDINGLY FAST!! Thinking of changing gearing (front sprocket?) for less top end and more low down grunt - anyone got any advice on effects on fuel economy/raised revs at cruising speeds/wheelies/speedo error?? Also thinking of adding k+n that has been in my garage for about three years with a jet kit (dynojet or factory?) as without rejeting it knackers up the bottom end, but no exhaust changes - worth bothering or not?
For Sale: no

Experience: Nearly every day for 4 years. one track day"so far"
Bikes Owned: 3
Accessories: LSL Crash mushrooms(very pretty, match the Purple top fairing), Pyramid colour coded Hugger, Smaller Coolant reservoir
Modifications: Crash mushrooms, had to drill Fairings but it was worth it, only draw back was that I had to fit the supplied smaller coolant bottle which allows left hand bung to locate directly to engine mount. But no leaks or heat problems
Problems: Carb-icing easy remedy (Silkolene Pro FST £7.50 for 500 ml which lasts daily winter use. used on previous bikes. Ill fitting panels unlike a Honda say but once Kwak always Kwak. Small showing of rust around tanks front lugs.
Comments:
Get your bike set up for you, Followed the advise for suspension in "performance Bikes-set-up guide. available from their website for about £3.00, Turned it from lard to laser, totally confidence inspiring. Want to fit a race can like Roger Nicholls but proper set-up is a must, currently toying with an Arrow system as have already been Dyno-Jetted before I bought it and now has original can on needed fine fettling to bring fuel consumption to around 120 miles a tank. but would love to gain more, but who cares about fuel when she is singing...JUST FOR INTEREST and science sake; have seen 185 mph on clock and began to run out of track obviously not a true exact speed, who has a more definate figure, not that it is that important, not like say cock size!!!!
For Sale: only if I could afford the other 6 grand for a ZX10R.... Keep you posted.

Red 1998 ZX-9R (Updated: 2004.1.20)

Tires: Bridgestone BT010
Owner: Tim Atwood
Email to Tim Atwood
Location: USA (NorthEast) -- Boston, MA
Experience: 10 years riding, 2 years club racing
Bikes Owned: 4
Accessories: Throttlemeister bar ends, MagKnight tank bra /top sheet, RKA 3 pt. 16l tank bag, Nonfango 38l tail trunk w/custom mount, V1 radar detector, DualStar heated grip kit with Progrip 713, Kisan headlight modulator
Modifications: Helibars, LP Superpole footpegs (lowered .75 inch), customized seat with Comfor foam, undercut transmission (see Problems), steel braided front brake lines, Factory jet kit, Racetech goldvalve forks, rebuilt shock (40k miles), electric carb heaters.
Problems: Misfiring in cold and humid weather, tried gas treatment and hotter plugs (cr8ek), didn't work, have fitted custom electric carb heaters. At 20k miles, 4th gear started popping in and out, previously had occasional false neutrals. I replaced the bent shift fork and had the rounded gear dogs fixed/ undercut at R&D Motorsports in Clearwater, FL. Now it shifts better than any bike I've ever ridden; shame on kawi for not using undercut gears stock. Front brake lever travel has always been too long, never as good as my brother's zx, no matter how much bleeding.
Comments:
Great bike, handles like an f2 but power of an open classer. Headlight much better than '94 zx9r. The weight loss makes it much easier to ride. Seems like quite a few of these have transmission problems, especially in the higher gears. Mine was out of warranty, so I ate the $300 to fix the shafts and did the disassembly/reassembly myself. Big $ to have a shop do it. Be careful if you're looking for a used one. After 5 years, still love the bike, though its really more bike than anyone needs for the street. I have added some mods to make it more comfortable. The lowered footpegs and higher seat make a huge difference, no more sore knees, and max lean angle is unchanged since the pegs are shorter/flatter than the stock ones. Helibars are very nice, but check out the twobros v3 risers as well. The riding position is now slightly more upright than a stock vfr. After racing for a couple years, I now appreciate comfort in my street bike, and I don't care about projecting a racer-wannabe knee-dragging image like the squids demand. Replaced brake rotors with new oems this winter at 39k mi. Recent suspension work brought back that new ride feel, but its still not a big difference from stock.

Problems: 10/10/2003 Bike just died this morning. Hit the ignition switch and the bike started for a second then it just died. When the key is in the on position the middle front light and the tail light will light up and the horn will blow, but the led reading of the mileage and the led clock is blank. The green light for nuetral won't light up either. Has any body had this problem before and if so, what was the solution? I know it's something electrical, but not sure exactly. Comments:
This bike is a real gem Very fast with a professional setup on the engine and suspension and a genuine 150+ RWHP I am currently considering stripping it for track use only and fitting a big bore kit Cams and take the engine to FIM spec as I recently bought an Aprilia RSVR Edwards Replica to very different bikes the 9R is a lot quicker!

Problems: 1. Right foot peg has a vibe coming on just past 6 to 6500 rpm. That is low in the rev range. 2. Engine has too much of a sewing machine sound even with the Hindle pipe on it.
Comments:
I bought the bike for power, looks, comfort. Got it all. I think the looks are out of this world. I go to my garage a lot to look at it. If it didnt come in gold/black I would not have got it. I think I would have gotten a 954.

Location: UK -- NW London / Middx

Bikes Owned: 3
Photo: Photo-Link
Accessories: Datatool Veto Evo alarm, ARD Racing carbon hugger, Nuvo Aeroflow screen
Modifications: Akrapovic end can. I dyno tested the bike after fitting the end can as it had totally fvcked up the bottom end and to a lesser extent the midrange. I fitted a dynojet kit to overcome this problem. I have gained 20Nm torque and 7 bhp at 2200rpm. i.e. "things" happen much earlier in the rev range. The power lines are fairly similar between 3k and 7k but above 7k things improve again and it has also gained 7bhp at 11800. Max bhp = 140 Check the graph at http://tinyurl.com/hpq0 I get another 20 mpg before reserve and the hesitation on a trailing throttle after a high speed run has also gone. Ohlins fork springs and rear shock - has transformed the bike.
Problems: Carb Icing - Silkolene FST (ie Fuel System Treatment) solves it.
Comments:
Do a lot of touring on the bike. I am 6' tall and find it much more comfortable than the physically smaller R1s/GSXRs/etc. The other bikes may be better for serious scratching and track days but for "real world" riding this bike has got to be at least as good if not better.

JKAZX2F132A002007:
Candy Gold/Black 2002 ZX900F1 (Updated: 2003.7.26)
Purchased: March 2002
Usage: 8,900 miles, Street/Sport.
Tires: BT012
Owner: Scott Forsythe
Email to Scott Forsythe
Location: USA (SouthEast) -- Marietta, Ga
Experience: started in dirt at age 12, raced MX/desert thru age 21, street/sport since then, been riding since 1968
Bikes Owned: 9
Accessories: Chase Harper tankbag, Shoei RF900, Joe Rocket mesh jacket w/armor, Technik boots, Joe Rocket summer gloves, Pit Bull rear spool stand and front triple clamp stand, lightweight cover, Kryptonite disc lock.
Modifications: Performance: Adjusted rear ride height by adding two 17mm fender washers (total thickness 6mm)under the upper shock mount..took about 20 min....wow what a difference! I am over 200 lbs, if you weigh less you might want to try about 4mm. Got the springs set at about 30mm sag, 2 turns out from full stiff on compression damping at both ends. No more standing up under trail braking, no more running wide & having to force it down..Carburation: At 7100 miles, I backed out the fuel screws on the bottom of the float bowls 3/4 turn and shimmed the needles up with a 4mm OD aluminum washer under each...then performed carb synch; result was a huge improvement in throttle response and power at all rpms but especially low-mid range. Mileage was unaffected (except when blasting up thru the gears which is more fun now!)Cosmetic:Trimmed up the rear fender (a pair of tin snips & a little masking tape to mark the profile works great)& relocated license plate(flipped the bracket upside down and mounted it in the holes where the rear reflector was)Removed the sidemarkers. Installed racing pegs on the stock mounts and replaced stock turn signals with Lockhart- Phillips miniatures.
Problems: Have had no failures or quality issues. Still running original chain/sprockets, very little wear, using Motul chain wax, WD40 to clean chain. Well into 2nd set of BT012E OE tires, getting great wear and very good all-round performance.
Comments:
This is a fantastic motorcycle! It turns in and flicks/changes line almost like a 600 after the ride height adjustment, yet hasn't lost any stability or front end feel. I don't care what they say about the Niner being overweight and too big. This thing runs hard but the motor is smooth as silk, it handles great, is all day comfy, has good range for a sportbike and looks great! ....Kawasaki got it right, including the price!

Accessories: Shoei helmet matches the bike. Joe Rocket mesh jacket, Pro grip tank gaurd, New pegs and turn signals, frame sliders, Ohlins damper, rear stand, new arctic purple bulbs, and a 12v cigarette lighter power accessory in the storage.
Modifications: Muzzy full system exhaust, titanium oval can. Factory jet kit. I cut the rear fender eliminated the turn signals, moved the bracket were the reflector was. Put on new turn signals, flush mount ones on front. I just converted the rear turn signals into the brake light. I used a tail light converter you can buy at a hardware store for trailers, it really looks good. A new smoke windscreen, used tinted clear coat and smoked out the front turn signals and tail light. You can still see very well but they don't stick out as you can see in the picks. I also powder coated the rims black. Went up two teeth in the rear sprocket, Stainless brake lines.
Problems: Rattle in the gauge cluster
Comments:
I recomend the exhaust system and the jet kit. It really makes the bike. The black rims are awsome!!!!

For Sale: I am actually a Concours owner, (sorry for invading your registry). I have a set of exhaust headers for a 1984 to 1986 ZX9R. (I bought them on ebay--somone was selling them as Concours headers!) Fortuneately for you, but not for me, I had them ceramic coated before I found that they won't fit under the fairing--cost was $190. They are in excellent condition and now have a satin chrome ceramic finish inside and out. The ceramic coating reduces radiant heat of the pipes by around 50%--cooler under fairing temps! It also boosts performance. This coating is used by top car racing teams. I would like to get that $190 back so that is what I'll ask for them--or just make me an offer.

Modifications: Polished rims, casings. Nikon race can (recommended). Difference is staggering. Dyno graph is straight up!! Plug chop shows good health and right mixture. No flat spot at all.
Problems: Carb icing (minor niggle). Main one is that the 10amp ignition fuse blows. Sometimes it'll run for a bit, though mostly blows when turn key. Typically, just out of warranty and will be expensive to fix according to dealer (picture man at service desk sucking air through teeth and tutting). Bike in garage at home until constant metering and head scratching resolve niggle. Can't find the problem - anyone help?

Love it to death. People notice it, although that could be something to do with the straight thu' can. DO NOT own or recommend these stupid furry ears that folk stick to helmets - DO NOT BE A DONUT!!

Black/Purple mica 2000 zx9r (Updated: 2003.5.4)
Purchased: March 2001- New
Usage: 33,000 kilometers, Street/Sport, Racetrack.
Tires: Dunlop D208
Owner: Mark
Email to Mark
Location: Australia (Eastern) -- Brisbane
Experience: 10 years riding hard
Bikes Owned: 6
Accessories: Tinted screen, Geelong carbon tank guard, Geelong carbon rear hugger.
Modifications: Pipemasters oval brushed alloy slip-on (about 1/3 the weight of the original with approx 9hp gain accross the band), jets/dyno tuning. Had the front forks lowered through the trip claps 5mm - great improvement...do it now. Increased the rear ride height to nearly max...need as much weight on that front as posible. New throttle grips - stickier tha betta. RK (gold) chain and sprok's to suit. fluffy dice (joke). Next on the list is WP spring upgrade for front shok.
Problems: Very little. I ride this bike everyday to and from work. On the weekends push it VERY hard. I go through tyres approx every 4000klms all round wear (soft compound D208's). I have some problems with throttle control in very tight corners/slow speeds - need more rear brake tha I usually like. Love the power delivery but more couldn't hurt. This bike does not like cold mornings (even in sunny QLD - crazy) once warmed no probs. biggest problem for me however is front sus confidence, hence the aforementioned lowering/heightening. I truly think that this may be remedied by a) heavier weight front fork oil and b) stiffer spring (WP).
Comments:
This bike loves good oil - for engine noise (got plenty of that) and gear change. I find Shell Advance fully synth works well. I have found that the front of this bike is WAY to soft - NEEDS fixing. The riding position is great alround riding-slightly more aggressive wouldn't hurt - but very comfortable (my biggest stint was 1100kms in the saddle - on the way to phillip is). overall I really do love this bike. I am very tempted to buy something new but honestly nothing quite compares to the allrounded performance of the 9. Very easy bike to LIVE with.

Problems: The brakes are fooking shite! No feel at all, they work, but the lever nearly comes back to the bars. Had to take the hugger off because it catches on the back shock reservoir. Back shock none too good but i understand the early ones are like that anyway.
Comments:
I like the bike, it takes two hefty people and luggage no probs, but would benefit from a better shock. Been all over the country and the TT on it. I'm debating whether to get a newer one or renovate the one i've got.
