Now GPS - do you need one

The Garmin C550 looks nice, but I need something i can also take in  
the Jeep for offroad, and in the boat for REALLY off road.  :)

Can you upload non-street maps to the garmin and plot your own  
waypoints?  Maybe pre-program your route based on map data and have  
the garmin follow along?

Just got back from Arizona where i was offroading with my dad.  Had a  
blast, but could have used a GPS to get the right trail (the  
instructions for the route were not quite correct).
