Hi John,

I'm fairly familiar with those, I had an 81 GPZ1100 and 
have restored several bikes from that era.

Most likely the problem is the seal at the left end of the 
crankshaft.  It's not uncommon on older bikes as the rubber 
seal gets brittle, especially with dirt bikes.  Getting the 
magneto assenbly off usually takes a special puller, you 
might need to see if your dealer will loan you one or yank 
it off for you.  The seal shouldn't be terribly hard to 
replace once you're in.

IMHO, the aftermarket magnetos on ebay are usually okay, 
I've used an aftermarket one on a previous project.  YMMV.
