Comments:
This title-less BMW R65 was disassembled all the way to the frame on November 5, 2005. There was not much left of this motorcycle when it was located. The motor (matching VIN) was without the alternator cover, the rear fender was broken, the fork tubes were missing as were the fuel tank, the saddle, the front fender, both wheels and tires, the side covers, battery, starter, handlebars and controls. Aside from the motor and frame, what remained was the transmission, propellor shaft and final drive, front brake caliper and rotor, rear foot pegs, rear springs, swing-arm and rear subframe, the wiring harness, exhaust pipes and mufflers. The exhaust pipes and mufflers are in poor cosmetic condition. Since acquiring this neglected and cannabilized R65, I have commenced a restoration and "Cafe Racer" conversion project. It is going so slooooowwwwww .....
For Sale: No. Wanted: (1) BMW spoke wheel hubs, (2) Akront 18" spoke wheel rims, (3) Marzocchi fork tubes, (4) black R65 fuel tank, (5) black R65 front wheel mudguard.

Problems: (1) broken ignition coil frame mountings (2) a slashed saddle (3) the anemic charging system (4) left crossover pipe clamp has broken off (5) the left Bing carburetor float floods and overflows at times (6) small oil leak underneath (7) it needs a new battery due to an animal gnawing on it while in storage
Comments:
This particular motorcycle may have been first owned by Pete of "Pete's Cycle/BMW" of Marlborough, New Hampshire (the predecessor to the current "Second Wind BMW" of Amherst, N.H.). A fun, nimble, well-balanced motorcycle. Excellent for in-city usage! In my opinion, it lacks sufficient comfort (due to the stock saddle) and power for long-distance, two-up, interstate highway touring, but for short in-town errands and economical commuting on secondary roads, it is an excellent choice. Steering head bearing service underway. This motorcycle was ridden in northern Sardinia, Italy from 1997 to 1999.
For Sale: No. Wanted: 1) kick-start mechanism, complete or not.

Location: USA (NorthCentral) -- Omaha, Nebraska
Experience: 20 years, commuting and some touring
Bikes Owned: 9
Accessories: BMW hard bags & mounts, unknown brand of plastic wind screen
Modifications: none yet
Problems: Somehow this bike ended up with one key for the gas cap; and another key for ignition, seat lock, and hard bags. But no key that I have works in the fork lock. Nothing about the bike or its paperwork suggests a salvage job. A minor irritant--but stuff happens on a vehicle this old.
Comments:
I'm still evaluating the wind screen that came on the bike--it might be coming off. This is the 2nd R65 I've had: the 1st one I sold after I bought a sports car in 1990. I'm very happy with its highway performance (I ride alone). It'll run all day at 65mph.

Problems: Charging light stays on VERY faintly (noticed only at night) but battery stays charged. Speedometer reads up to 20 kph at highway speeds. I ride by RPM to compensate
Comments:
Very comfortable to ride but dosnt like high RPMS Feels like it is straining. Presently looking for a 1994-95 R100R 'Classic"
For Sale: Actually, I lost my original BMW Owners manual last summer, and am in dire need of a replacement. Anyone ??? R65 MIGHT be for sale, IF I can find a sutable R100R

Turquoise 1981 R65 (Updated: 2010.2.6)
Purchased: July, 2009
Usage: 24,300 miles, Street/Sport.
Tires: F=100/90V18, R=4.00V-18
Owner: Gregg
Email to Gregg
Location: USA (NorthEast) -- Maryland suburbs (Wash, DC)
Experience: 32 Years
Bikes Owned: 3
Accessories: Factory hard bags were installed, and I immediately installed Progressive rear shocks.
Modifications: It has an 800cc engine installed, (not 850 jugs). I'd like to track the serial to get date of Mfr. to identify parts.
Problems: Same as many owners, the seat could be used to interrogate POW's. It has the usual 4,200 RPM buzz, but can cruise endlessly @ 4,000. Slow from a start even with the 800 engine (which is also VERY thirsty). One of the earlier "owners" tried to repaint the front fender and now the paint is etched badly.
Comments:
All the above problems are minor compared to the positives on the bike. I'm currently repairing some small maintenance items and am really looking forward to my first full season riding it.

Quick release top chest saddle bag rack. Homemade metal topchest 30"x12"x12", and saddlebags 12"x22"x8" with integrated lights and fender. 150W/120VAC.
Problems: Nothing you woundn't expect with a 25 year old bike!
Comments:
Third owner, I know both the previous owners, the bike has been from Toronto to the maritimes countless times, and serves me well as a daily commuter, including a few days in the snow. I recently purchased an 84' R100 and the R65 now belongs to my wife. We just got back from the Grand Canyon (8,000 kms in two weeks), and both bikes were 100% reliable. Everything is past tense now. Nov 9, 2009 the bike was hit by a car driver doing a left turn while my wife was driving. She shook off the dust from herself... the bike was a complete write off. Today, purchased a new baby 1986 R65 with only 31,000 kms.

Location: Australia (Southern) -- Launceston, TASMANIA

Photo: Photo-Link
Accessories: None, it's stipped back to minimum factory standard, not even the engine bars anymore
Modifications: Kawasaki ignition coils, fuel cap seal off a later model, mirrors off Harley (closest to original chrome rectangular units) seat recovered in modern style vinyl (twice), resprayed twice, now Ducati 748SP yellow, new BMW gel battery - my first 2 BMW batteries lasted 8 years each! New floating front brake rotors and braided SS lines.
Problems: Lost a sidecover before I started to zip tie them on, alternator rewound, split cv diaphram, dead coil, leaking fuel tap, water in fuel, unevenly worn front disk rotors due to the hole spacings, timing chain replaced once, speedo was fixed 17 years ago, the rear main seal has been replaced twice, the gear shaft seal and the rear diff seal and wheel bearings have been replaced, only had to replace the rear brake shoes once, the rear drive splines have some wear - requires high quality grease to absorb shock and minimise wear,
Comments:
Lots of bikes have come and gone but I've kept the little beemer for 24 years, it's a part of the family. Never had the heads off, doesn't use oil. It's done a lot of 2-up touring with a heap of gear, had the rings reved out of it keeping up with the big japs, done a few wheelstands and we even have a TasRally donut comp trophy and won a bike overload - 12 people and I rode it! Since doing it up I have won the 'Best European' trophy at a local show-n-shine 2 years running.
