Modifications: removed ALL stickers , trimmed rear fender ,installed C/F T/S's , adj suspenson to suit my taste. adj ECM richer on low end. Reasearching exhaust systems for best
Problems: Typical stumbles as experienced on 97 model (fixed with ECM reprogramed),"clunking" from front end, "ticking " from front cylinder,"head shake" from 55 to 40 on decel. with or without dampner.( dealer warrentied front tire and new steering damper) false neutral between 5th and 6th,(only once so far) gearbox smooth on up shifts but stiff on downshifts,(getting better with miles) engine vibration numbs hands (not as bad as 900ss sp DUCK) , paint scratches easily, power feels weak compared to 97 model owned, and honda vtr1000 that was traded in for this TL (I'll try new exhaust system ,if not improved "trade in time"
Comments:
Not too pleased so far in dealer knowledge of bike and results of fix attempts, This should be a better bike based on what Suzuki has learned from 97 model problems ,but it isn't WHY? I would like to have my TL1000R or VTR1000 back . I'll give it some more miles to improve but if not it'll be another "trade in"

Problems: about the same encoutered with other tls, the same on the recalls, but none with the stalling,or fouling plugs i cannot say that the bike is troublefree did develop a anti-freeze leak between the cylinders, other that life been good
Comments:
i will tell everyone keep a close eye on the clutch&valve clearances do not trust the owners manuals(because i just redid my and i had only 7500miles on it!)15000miles yeah right!this bike is more fun than beating the snot out cbr900rrs&r1s,and boy they were surprised(snicker)and by the way do not let anyone say that these bikes need a full fairing, because that is part of charater of these fun machines and they would not get it anyway ,i convinced quite a few after they tried mine!.

THEY TOLD ME THAT'S THE COLOR THEY ARE STICKING WITH WHETHER IT MATCHES OR NOT.JUST A WARNING.
Modifications: YOSH RS-3 STAINLESS/CARBON FIBER EXHAUST SYSTEM,REPROGRAMMED BOX(THANKS,JASON THURMAN!),K&N FILTER,16 TOOTH FRONT SPROCKET REMOVED STOCK TURN SIGNALS AND REPLACED WITH C/F SMOKE TEARDROP STYLE,REMOVED REAR FENDER AND MOVED PLATE AND LIGHT UNDERNEATH(WAITING FOR EUROBIKES FENDER ENCLOSURE)S/S BRAKELINES,REMOVED ALL STICKERS AND RELECTORS,POLISHED CHAIN GUARD,YOSH HI-MOUNT SYTEM REQUIRED REMOVAL OF REAR FOOT PEGS SO I MADE A BRACKET THAT MOVES THEM FORWARD(I ONLY USE THEM WHEN TAKING A PASSENGER,IT TAKES 5 MIN. Problems: THE USUAL STUMBLE(CURED BY JASON THURMAN),THOUGHT I WAS HEARING"CAM NOISE" I HAVE OTHERS TALK ABOUT ON THIS SITE,MAYBE JUST PARANOID
Comments:
MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE TO RIDE SINCE BOX WAS REPROGRAMMED,16 TOOTH GEAR MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE,EVEN THE WHEELIE IMPAIRED SHOULD BE ABLE TO STAND THE BIKE UP AFTER DOING THIS MOD!THE BEST 20 BUCKS YOU WILL EVER SPEND.YOSH SYSTEM EXTREMELY LOUD(RACE-ONLY SYSTEM,I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN)I HAD THE BIKE DYNO TESTED AND WAS KIND OF DISSAPOINTED,111 H.P.WITH 70 FT./LBS.AT THE WHEEL, NOT BAD BUT I EXPECTED MORE WITH THE MODS(THESE NUMBERS ARE WHAT THE BIKE SUPPOSEDLY HAS STOCK!)I SEE SO MANY OTHER OWNERS ON THIS SITE WITH NUMBERS LIKE 117-128. THE MECHANIC SAID THE NUMBERS SHOULD COME UP ONCE THE MOTOR GETS ABOUT 1500-2000 MILES ON IT.IF ANYBODY HAS HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE I WOULD APPRECIATE HEARING FROM YOU.

Problems: 3k - 4k Stumbles. Cured with new ECU. Smileage has increased greatly. Oil coming out the weep-hole, found that the impeller was also broken off of the shaft.
Comments:
The Lindemann suspension work is incredible. The bike sits taller, because of correct preload, flicks quicker, and is more controllable. No tankslappers since the damper was installed.

Red 1997 TL1000 (Updated: 1999.11.11)
Purchased: September 1999
Usage: 5,400 miles, Street/Sport, Racetrack.
Tires: Metzler MEZ1 Race Compound
Owner: Michael Smith
Email to Michael Smith
Location: USA (California) -- California
Experience: 4 years, 1/2 year racing
Bikes Owned: 2
Accessories: Micron Carbon Slip-Ons, Lockhart short stalk II rear turn signals, Lockhart bullet front turn signals
Modifications: The first thing I did was hack off that ugly rear fender. Used a dremel and made a fairly clean cut. Mounted the license plate to the back of the storage box. Removed front and rear turn signals and replaced them with Lockhart Phillips pieces. Converted to Dot 5.1 brake fluid, front and rear.
Problems: This was a salvage bike. I bought it for a screaming $3200 bucks. It came with a bent front rim and a smashed fuel tank. I got a new tank from the salvage yard that was perfect for $75 and a new front rim and rear passenger seat for $300. The bike has pretty much every piece of plastic scratched. Repainting this thing in the near future will be necessary. I had to replace both levers, footpegs and the shifter lever. By the way, what's up with Suzuki's pricing. I was quoted $110 for the shifter lever from the dealer. HIGHWAY ROBBERY I THINK. I don't know what recalls have been fixed but it has an erratic idle coming to a stop and I have a clunk in the front end. Other than that, this bike is the best bike I have ever ridden. The sound alone is worth the price of admission. IF ANYONE HAS DONE THE WARRANTY WORK ON THEIR TL, I WOULD APPRECIATE A LIST OF WHAT WAS DONE SO THAT I CAN CHECK TO SEE IF THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD THIS BIKE FIXED. I WOULD RATHER CHECK MYSELF THAN LET SUZUKI CHECK.
Comments:
If there is one thing I have learned it's that Suzuki and their dealers are awefull. I have never waited less than 15 minutes for service(often with nobody in line). The guy behind the counter was telling racist jokes in front of a black man that was looking to buy a bike. Overall, the service is absolutely horrible. The prices for parts is ridiculous and I would never trust my bike to the kind of hacks that work at the dealership near me. Previously I owned a Honda and I have to admit that their prices seem fair compared to Suzuki and at least there was some amount of service.

Kevlar lines from Goodridge, EBC green pads. (soon to be HH) -VeeTwo ride height adjuster. -Drained oil out of stock steering damper, refilled with air tool oil.
Problems: -Difficulty in explaining to the officer why the front wheel is off the ground. -Stock gearing is way too high. -A busted fairing, broken off footpeg, and lots of scratches (see below) -Gas in oil -Fouled plugs at 175 miles, wouldn't fire a beat. Replaced the CR9EK with CR8EK, haven't had a problem since. What a bitch though!
Comments:
-Awesome bike! Has power anywhere -Bought it on 3/23/98, crashed it on 3/27/98. Car pulled out in front of me and a buddy. No where to go. What a bummer. -16 tooth on front helped a bunch, but I need more gear. -Yosh cans sound great! Resembles a Harley until you crack the throttle, then it sounds like hell on earth. They are a lot on the loud side, so I'll probably soon get some tickets to show for my effort. -I love this bike. -New brakes are the cats ass! This thing will stop now! -8/21/99 dynoed at Bloomington Power Sports (IN). 115.5 hp without a remap.

Email to Jacques Courteau
Location: Canada (Central) -- Ottawa
Experience: 32 years riding: street, trials, road racing, ice, sidecar etc.
Bikes Owned: 50+
Accessories: Suzuki tank bra (black) and LP tank bra (green); Suzuki rear stand; "recall" steering damper; magnetic tank bag (use a cloth to protect the paint...); swingarm stand spools; Hindle full race system
Modifications: flush-mount LP turn signals; small rear turn signals; front fender extender and rear hugger fender; K&N air filter; re-mapped fuel injection to match Hindle system; made brackets to mount exhaust can REALLY high (right under rear bodywork, cans exit above stock mounting points for rear turn signals)
Problems: originally had slight surging at steady low revs (3.2k to 4k); stumbles cured (faulty TPS, two other sensors replaced on warranty, good synch); leaking water pump seal (warranty). Fuel consumption was 26 mpg (imperial), now 42-46 mpg (imperial); clutch sliping badly by 23,000km, was replaced under warranty although bike was then 2 years old (thank you Suzuki Canada for standing behind your product); bent both rims badly on manhole cover in street under construction, but Moto Pintendre in Quebec City did wonderful job straightening them out for $40 each!
Comments:
Nice bike if it's not your only one: very single-purpose bike, great for sport riding, lousy for anything else (but who cares about anything else anyway?); break-in DOES make a hell of a difference: mine did not tun right until 2500km, then almost overnight, BINGO! Got an Avon Azaro at 4100 km, but tire was out of round and was immediately replaced by Metzeler MEZ1; this feels really good, quick warm-up, sticks well. Michelin Macadams feel like I've added another inch of suspension travel at both ends: great ride, now have about 8,000 km on them (wow!) and stick well although I would not take them to the track.

Tires: Dunlop 207s
Owner: Philip Hostetter
Email to Philip Hostetter
Location: USA (SouthEast) -- St. Petersburg, Florida
Experience: 19 years
Bikes Owned: 20-25
Modifications: Two Bros. C-2 Aluminum Slip-Ons.-Great sound, naturally. Moderate quality of fit - needed liquid gasket to seal leaks: Dynojet Power Commander - see comments below; Front - Goodridge brake lines/EBC(Green) brake pads/ Sunstar Rotor - Each highly recommended. All (including windshield not including tank) decals/ DOT reflectors removed. Front/Rear suspension settings altered per Superbike, and other well-intended sources- At 210lbs., never really a tankslapping issue. 8/7/98 - 16 tooth countershaft sprocket - money well spent - YIKES!; New tank/gasket; Dynojet PC re-re-mapped; New (possibly "phantom") new clutch springs; "Dremeled" rear fender. 12/15/98: Added Corbin seat. Okay, as usual, but what a monopoly. Also, switched to 180/55 rear (Dunlop 207 along with front). Handling seems more balanced/stable-certainly quicker.
Problems: No Stumbles with new ECU and/or Dynojet PC, but hard to keep Throttle Postion Sensor/ Idle/Dynnojet PC properly set up. 8/7 - Dynojet PC - improves throttle response and smoothness(if a TL can ever be characterized as smooth), but still difficult to dial in properly for an extended period of time. Clutch slips a little in top two gears at 7000 RPM despite "Suzuki bulletin-based" mod- no warranty or, apparently, any recall. Clunk in front end-appears to be either new disc or, more likely, inside forks. 12/15 Clunk remains . Front suspension stiff as well in need of a rebuild. . 1/99: Clutch no longer slipping. Bike runs beautifully...
Comments:
Fast, interesting, and unique bike. However, thanks to Suzuki a constant work in progress. 8/7/98 - Never a dull moment from any perspective!

I just love my TL, there is nothing like a V-Twin and i'm going to stay with them now. I just have one thing though i would like to find a kind of tire that will last for 5000 miles but has the stickyness for the hard riding. If anyone is looking for a great summer tire thats sticker than the dunlops, and fall into a corner better. Try out the mich PILOTS, but DO NOT use them when it rains. For wet weather TRY out the battle ax BT56SS's. I got just over 3,000 miles on the pilots (thats hard rideing). I don't kave a number on the bt56ss's yet but i am over 3,000 miles now and with plenty of meat still left. Also, after i had the ecm card replaced i had it all dialed in and came out with 115 horse at the rear with 80 foot pound of tourque. Now it really does power wheelies like it's cool.
