Comments:
This was my Demo machine in 1979. I liked it so much I purchased it when we took it off the demo program with 4000 miles on the clock. In the summer of 1980 I put 17,000 miles on it in three months traveling around the US and Northwest Canada. It would cruise at 117 MPH indicated prior to being modified. It was carfully maintained and never gave me a problem after the warranty work. I rode it constantly year around even in the snow. The week before Christmas 1981 I rode it to Maine and L.L. Beans from Connecticut to do some shopping for the family. This was a night time ride with no fairing or windscreen. The transmission and rear drive have never been appart and work faultlessly, as do the instruments and electrics. After a number of years riding through New Englands winters the R65 was disassembled and the frame/swingarm re painted gloss black as the semi gloss the factory used did not hold up to the harsh weather. I was never happy with the 851 piston kit. The machine pulled hard and was noticably faster but the teflon coated slipper skirt pistons would rattle during warm up and eventually just got under my skin. I didn't run the machine for fifteen years, but kept it warm in my garage with my other riders. I am just now, late 2004, bring it back to original specification and hope to have it on the road again very soon.

Comments:
Bike has been virtually flawless since purchased from 1st owner. With two other bikes to ride, Commando and Morini, the low milage has this bike just broken in. I believe this was the last year for the R65 in the USA.

Problems: Hall sensor replaced at 50K miles, speedo rebuilt at 53K (try Palo Alto Speedometer Repair in CA - these guys are great!). Horrific brake squeal from front discs no matter what pad compound I use, have had warped front right rotor. Also have a wierd intermittant loss of one cylinder when starting up cold that no one has been able to fix. It goes away immediately once warmed up a bit. Any comments or experience on this??
Comments:
I am the second owner having purchased the bike from a guy I work with who bought it new. This bike has a personality all its own - not fast or fancy by any means, but it always gets looks at the bike shop or on club rides. I have a K1200RS for long trips and two-up rides, but I seem to gravitate to this bike when I am alone. It is probably the most fun bike I have owned for riding in the twisties, and it seems to handle like it is on rails, despite the skinny little Metzeler on the front rim! Easy to work on and just a pleasure to ride on trips or around town. I will probably always keep this one.
For Sale: For sale: One set of Krauser saddlebags that fit on the trapezoidal Krauser pannier frames and latch with seatbelt type tabs. These bags are in great shape, are white in color, and are smaller than the big "suitcase" style Krausers that most of us have. Good for city riding or weekend trips.

Modifications: Running Rock Oil semi synth 15w50 and fully synth gear/final drive oil. Semi gutted and rewelded remaining baffles in muffler and welded shut. Can't afford AU$400 just yet. Fitted new Staintune tail pipes, bargain at AU$600.
Problems: None so far. Do BMW's have problems?? Gave the carbs a much needed o/haul and replaced throttle cables and timing chain. Once correct sequence of carb/cable synchronisation learnt (using manometer), purrs like a kitten and pulls smoothly in top from just under 2k revs (but don't make a habit of it, just that it now can).
Comments:
Is the realisation of a 10 year dream to own an airhead classic. Totally different feel from my previous rice cookers, even the Yammy SR500. Hope to take Eastern States tour later this year, all the way to Sydney and back. Love the sound/feel at idle of the boxer engine (also long time VW/Porsche fanatic) and the power delivery, flat torque curve, on acceleration. Not a rev head so love the raw feel of the bike, vibration and all. Only 5'3" so am on tippy/toe at rest, but low centre of gravity means leaning bike to flat-foot it is not a chore lifting it back up for take off. Hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Owner: Karl Stevens           Phone: 813-739-1494
Email to Karl Stevens
Location: USA (SouthEast) -- Tampa, Florida
Experience: Thirty plus years riding - have owned 5 prior Beemers, over 30 other bikes from Honda to Harley
Bikes Owned: 30+
Accessories: Pichler color-matched full fairing, black chrome crash bars, Sargent seat, gold pin stripes, black valve covers, Saeng antiturbulence windscreen trim, Hepco/Becker hard bags.
Modifications: None yet. Installed foam handlebar grips after first highway trip to keep hands from from going numb again. Replaced dead battery with Wesco sealed battery.
Problems: The bike is in excellent condition and reflects the low mileage. Petcock started leaking, but this was a simply $30 fix. The bike will be used mostly around town and on short Interstate trips. For those uses, the stock BMW American (high)bars seem a bit too low and forward (for my personal preference), causing pain in my hands after leaning on them in about 10 minutes. I'm going to try higher RT bars, plus a taller windscreen (Gustafsson) to lower buffeting (ask me about the problems that I had with Leif Gustafsson, the windscreen manufacturer!). The only minor annoyance, besides the inherent vibration between 4,500 & 5,500 RPM, is that the transmission sometimes shifts into neutral when I'm upshifting, although I understand that this problem is common to some R65's. The solution is to only shift when the RPM's are above 4,000 (I just personally prefer to shift at a lower RPM, but I'll break myself of that habit). Other than that, there are no problems. The bike runs smooth and flawlessly.
Comments:
3/15/04 - I've always had larger BMW's and other make bikes, but this one is just flat out FUN to drive, especially around town. The Henna Red with white original wheels REALLY draws compliments. I have several other bikes. As soon as I got the bike, I changed all the fluids, per my dealer. 7/08/04 - The dealer told me not to use full synthetic engine oil, since leaks might develop. However, the bike's inherent buzzing between 4,500 & 5,000 although not really that annoying, prompted me to change the oil to full synthetic (Golden Spectro 20W-50), which is what I use in all my bikes, including my older 1972 BMW R75 toaster. That has really made a difference. The buzzing is not as pronounced, and the bike has more power and is definitely smoother.
For Sale: 1982 R65 LS for sale - Please see above for accurate description, and feel free to call me for more. I will mechanically guarantee this bike for the first thirty days, since I know that it's in perfect condition. I'll be pleased to send pictures. The bike is really beautiful. As of 7-08-04 it only has 23,500 original miles on it. Original Henna red with a full Pichler color-matched fairing (both uppers & lowers), original white wheels, gold pin stripes, Sargent seat with original Hepco-Becker hard bags, black chrome mini-case savers and black valve covers. Complete routine servicing done with all fluids changed twice within the first thousand miles. I've only put about a thousand miles on her and I think that I need a larger bike (I weigh about 220 pounds). Price is $3,300 firm. Karl Stevens Tampa, Florida 813-739-1494

Accessories: No accessories but would dearly love a set of panniers.
Modifications: No real modifications. Ran the last battery dry (pretty much after I bought it) and put the biggest BMW battery that could fit the battery compartment. The only problem was that the battery straps were too short so I just secured it with some zip ties to the existing battery holder. The other modification is I quickly got rid of the collector box (due to internal rust and noise) and put a H-pipe between the headers and exhaust pipes which increased volume by 1 decibel but surprisingly the bike did breath better. Have just had the accelerator and choke cables replaced due to wear.
Problems: A leak from gear selector/gearbox junction. But the big one is the front right push rod seal has cracked and has developed a very slow leak and will need to be repaired. I have done nearly all mechanical stuff to the bike (oil changes, electrical wiring, disassembled the speedo unit to replace the trip meter spline that had broken half way up the shaft) but this requires someone with experience as the barrel has to come completely off. So if I am doing one side I will get the other side done too. There is also a slight noise from the timing chain. I have also replaced the ignition coil due design fault (cracks in casing) so every time it rained charge would arc to the frame and not go to the spark plug.
Comments:
Apart from the few problems, which were/are easily rectified, I love the bike and will never get rid of it. It has style. It is great to ride (even if it lacks a few horses and suspension is soft) and I am a shaft drive convert. No hassels and power delivery is smooth.

Problems: Suspect fuel tank has rust internally - carb float bowls full of reddish grit. Will be obtaining a tank sealant kit to fix the problem.
Comments:
It's a really nice ride. No rocketship, but sweet steering and handling, despite the super-soft suspenion. Very pleased with my latest acquisition.
