Comments:
My cross-country days are done. I put my trusty K100LT on the auction block, and was sold. I wanted a smaller "R" bike between 500 and 750 cc, and found the R65, with extremely low original mileage, in fabulous condition, just twenty miles from my home.

Accessories: Oxford Tank Bag. Roadster screen. Just bought a second hand pair of 42 litre Krauser Panniers and top box with mounting set. A bit large and they're in garish red and blue so a respray (probably black) is immiment.
Modifications: None
Problems: The steering head lock and seat lock won't work with the key supplied with the bike. Suspect ignition lock has been changed at some time in the past. 21 June 2001. Front twin disk calipers seized up after 400 miles. Many happy hours spent removing the corroded pistons - flooding with penetrating oil, gently heating in an oven and then applying 150psi air hose (courtesy of friendly local garage) finally got 'em out. Great company called Motorworks (www.motorworks.co.uk) has recon'd pistons which are now fitted and all's well. Next up is replacing the disks which were pretty well scored when I bought the bike. Anyone any experience with cast iron disks? Are they better?
Comments:
I've had three 75/7s in the past. My first impression of the R65 (after 130 miles) is that I need a higher top gear! 70 mph needs 4250 revs - sounds a bit breathless. But the bike is a joy to handle and I'm very happy with it. 21 June 2001. It gets better! Very easy to handle, comfortable, good engine note - but I still wish I had a higher top gear! There seems to be enough torque to take a higher gear - anyone tried to modify the gearbox ratios? 2002 - Toured Ireland, very comfortable, no problems. Plus several trips to London and back (450 miles round trip). No problems. But what do you expect? This is a BMW!
For Sale: BMW R65, 1979, 78,000 miles, twin front disks, 42 litre Krauser panniers, topbox and Oxford tankbag, screen, ready to travel classic, good condition, completely reliable, taxed November, MOT May 2004. Very reluctant sale £1500 ono Tel: 01423 528390

Accessories: Pichler Uni-4 faring with new windshield purchased from factory. Corbin seat. No bags but want some.
Modifications: None other than to replace the instrument panel which was chopped to accommodate high rise bars, and replaced bars with stock US style.
Problems: Hard starting on cold mornings. Runs rich - should do better than 35-40 MPG. Odometer doesn't work (typical).
Comments:
Was going to replace the faring with stock headlamp and turn signal bars until I watched riding buddies freeze and get smacked with bugs. Love the faring! Bought for commuting but have enjoyed road trips, including to the 2003 BMWMOTORRAD at Lake Tahoe. Took the bike to 8500 feet and still no problem on the hills. Told the wife I wasn't going to get addicted...

Comments:
The bike handles fairly well & touching the jugs on the ground is worlds better than doing so with the solid mounted pegs. Of my three bikes, it's the one I ride on a regular basis & the one primarily used in wet weather for its skinny tires. My longest trip on it was from Fairbanks, AK to Missoula, MT & back ~5200 miles.

Experience: 20 Age 63, returned with this bike 6 years ago
Bikes Owned: 5
Accessories: Old BMW Hard bags,Parabellum windshield, otherwise completly stock. Have not replaced coil
Modifications: Had speedo rebuilt(Irv @Palo Alto)after water seeped in. Later, tripmeter went out. This seems a common prob. No problems at all except nothing common to this bike even some stuff thats supposed to fit R65's.Even such things as instructions for spline lube is different for this bike.
Problems: Vibration problem common to these that goes away above 75mph.I heard about a fix for this problem. Also the lean over position on bars is tough on shoulders. It helps to use rear pegs.Seat is very uncomfortable. Center stand is problematical! Also I learned that when the switch is on the bike better be running!
Comments:
It's such a neat and unique little bike,so dependable.I guess Progressive springs on front are in order and steering bearing check/ replacement. Would like to hear where I can find info on modifications specific to R65LS- for example modification of engine mounts to reduce vibration, modification on handlebars to improve posture for touring, or other suggestions

Problems: 1) rubber boot on odometer reset knob needs replacement – in heavy rain a little water can get into speedo, 2) Slight flat spot in steering – steering bearings should be repacked. 3) Chrome on pipes in good condition, but slight bulge may indicate sub surface rust starting on one of the pipes.
Comments:
I am the original owner - nevver dropped and a fine ride.
For Sale: $2900 - I like the bike, but am replacing it with an F650
