Accessories: Hoese and / or cycle sound Invader Fairing with the Krauser K2 Luggage system
Modifications: Breakwell and Green, (hand made with no visible welds)Stainless Steel Pipes. Surefoot Sidestand. The top of the Center Stand that rolls back onto the (frame)'lugs' had been'Tempered'to prevent it rolling back past them and hence splaying open and collapsing off the stand. The 'feet' had two 'internal footplates' welded onto the 'bottoms' to provide more service area contact o prevent it sinking into the ground and / or falling over. Circuit breaker fitted.
Problems: BMW Exhaust systems were rubbish. I went through three sets of silencers (thankfully under warrenty) in very much less than the prescribed 3yrs or 24,000 miles. Hence I repalced them with Breakwell and Green Stainless, which have now been on the machine 18 years. Repeated vandalism and theft.
Comments:
This is post 1996, therefore what follows is a insequential and incomprehensive SERVICE HISTORY (of my beloved) BMW R65'81: purchased (and delivered from Germany), Sept 1981. CLUTCH: failure resulting in vehicle recovery within a month or two of warranty expiring. To BMWs credit, they recovered and made good. It’s had certainly three maybe even four clutch plates replaced to date. FAIRING: (as of 1983 Cycle Sound) Hoese Invader, originally, Vetter Windjammer IV, (would have very much preferred a WJ V but alas couldn’t acquire one. EXHAUST SYSTEM: (Breakwell and Green hand made with no visible welds) stainless steel, as a result of the failure of abject failure (of three sets) of silencers to last 36,000km and / or three years. SIDESTAND: 'Surefoot' (as recommended by Motor-works purchased in 1997), which meant I could sit on the bike, even when fully loaded with touring luggage. N.B. The BMW original was about as much use as a ‘chocolate fireguard’. Hence prior to the fitting thereof, the machine kept repeatedly falling over, consequently repeatedly damaging, notably the rocker covers, (exhaust) silences and / or panniers. Having kicked the original stand, so often, (to straighten it) it eventually acquire metal fatigue and snapped off, (altogether). CENTRESTAND: The original was also about as much use as a ‘chocolate fireguard’. (Father) ‘tempered’ and ‘hammered it’ in to prevent it rolling past the lugs. He also welded on two ‘footplates to very much lessen the risk of it falling over.’20 Amp Hr. BATTERY: 2nd purchased 1985, 3RD purchased 1993, 4th purchased 1996, 5th replaced under warranty 2002. Bendix (STARTER MOTOR: changed 1985, mileage I omitted to document and hence cannot recollect. LUGGAGE SYSTEM: Krauser replaced with far superior (Krauser) K2's in 1990 purchased from Germany. (K2 undoubtedly being the best motorcycle luggage system in the world, not least of which as a result of facilitating rear wheel removal). REGRINDS: Crankshaft @ 93,000km. Also at 118,000km Valves reground and seated too. The crankshaft snapped @ 125,364km. (Possibly as a result of having twice been stolen. Who knows, if prior to recovery (in a somewhat wrecked state) if it had been repeatedly hammered during these incidents? What with that and repeated vandalism from purchase to date. My father, (a former ships engineer who, died 02 05 00) had maintained my machine throughout maintained the aforementioned work, was a work of art, such that I should and did write to them to thank them as it was in his words, exemplary. Many years prior to that, upon the very first (internal) inspection, of the bottom end, he stated he had never seen such an incredibly robust crankshaft (and ironically added that the machine would outlive him). FUEL and LUBRICANTS: (as recommended by Motor-works), as of 100,000 km, Broquet Fuel Converters, and Slick 50 added to engine and gearbox RECEIPTS: Many though unfortunately not all retained, due to erroneously disregarding their relevance and / or misplaced. BEARINGS: Swingarm @ 100,000km, ditto (steering head) bearings. Wheel Bearings (best recollection every 30,000km)? REWIRING: Complete (as a result of vandalism) and once again since then due to soiling. CABLES: replaced due to repeated vandalism and / or (fair) wear and tear. SEAT: replaced 1994 as a result of vandalism. SPEEDO: Replaced 1993 @ 97,000km TIMING CHAIN: replaced 1996 at 118,000km. Alternator BRUSHES: replaced 1996 at 118,000km. REGULATOR: replaced 1996 @ 118,000KM COIL: replaced 1996, @ 118, 000km (Front) BREAKS: three changes @ unknown mileages. Rear, once @ 100,000km PISTON RINGS: Changed @ 105,000 REAR SHOCKS: replaced 1992. BOTTOM END: changed 1999 @ 125,750km (Stainless) DISCS: replaced (withCast Iron) 1999 @ 125,750km ATE CALIPERS: replaced with Brembos 1999 @ 125,750km. Front (FORKS): reconditioned @ 125,750km. CLUTCH: plates replaced approximately every 30,000km? (Vehicle recovery resultant) CLUTCH: operating pushrod and bearings replaced @ 136,500km. CARBUERETTOR: (Cylinder Head Mounts) replaced 2001 @ 145,000km. CARBUERETTORS: overhaul kit fitted, 2002. BRAKE LEVEL RESERVOIR: replaced @ 145,836km STARTER MOTOR and SOLENOID: replaced 2001 at 145, 900km REPAINT OF FRAME: (with Hammerite as a result of having travelled to Iceland) 1985. RESPRAYS: 1990 and 1997. ELECTRONIC IGNITION CONTROL BOX: replaced 2001 Due to high mileage 153,500km and lack of (father) and compression coupled with long term unemployment we must now regrettably part company. Hence it is available for either restoration but will consider ‘breaking’. Offers please. (New)Spares (for sale): Control Cables Wheel and other bearings Fork Seals Wheel Seals Gaskets. (Other) Spares: Cowling (Seat) Foam (Knackered) Carbuerettor (Knackered)Starter Motor Fairing (Headlight) TOURS: 1982 Eire/Wales 3,500km 1982 Scandinavia 12,500km 1985 Faroes and Iceland 5000km To conclude, (whilst I have no job and no prospect of one, hence cannot afford another machine) it’s truly lamentable that BMW no longer continue to produce these wonderful machines. (I erroneously sold the first one within eighteen months, with a view to progressing to a R100RT, R100RS, R100T, R100S or R80, but most definitely didn’t like any, hence I purchased yet another R65 only the ’81 version with (North American) Swept back bars. For further details: PLEASE TELEPHONE (UK) 01642 300289 Why is it, anything worth having be it a BMW R65, (Vetter) Windjammer V, (Hoese and / or Cycle Sound) Invader Fairing or Krauser K2 Panniers are no longer available? Do some fools not appreciate craftsmanship and hence quality engineering?

Accessories: Bikini fairing, 2 into 1 exhaust
Modifications: nil
Problems: Experinced an intermittent miss for first year, some days it was fine, but would just "die", often at a critical time like passing a truck at 120kph, or when I was out the back of beyond on a boys' weekend. Always worse if the weather was damp, turned out to be vertigrease (sp?) on the connections, since then, no problems!!
Comments:
This is a great toy, I love getting out around the backroads on a sunny weekend, it relieves all the stress of the week and bring s asmile to my face, should have done it years ago!!

Email to Dean Pennell
Location: USA (SouthEast) -- Locust, NC
Experience: maybe 5 years total
Bikes Owned: 4
Accessories: This bike appears to be mostly stock except for bag mounts, maybe a modified side-stand.
Modifications: The exhause is chrome, an obvious replacement of the original. Must have been much cheaper.
Problems: An erratic tachometer, that's about it!
Comments:
I love this thing. It's a keeper, although I recently bought an R80RT for some long distance touring. The R65LS is not a touring machine if you're of normal stature and over fifty years of age. Does anyone know of any way to attach a windshield to this bike without modifications to any of the original fairing?

Comments:
Im on my second R65(previous one scrapped after only 144,000 miles) I also own an R45 which will be converted to R65 spec next year.present R65 has 109,000 miles on clock. recent engine rebuild only required new exhaust valves.

Accessories: Had a beautiful Krauser cockpit fairing in '83, destroyed in fallover. BMW hard side cases. San Jose fork brace and fork boots. European model handle bars (lower than stock U.S.)
Modifications: Drilled out stock mufflers for a little more power/sound. Rubber rear engine mounts to replace standard spacer disks. Read about these mod in Motorcyclist mag. many years ago.
Problems: Shifting is clunky and always has been. Handling is light but the shaft drive rear end rise and fall is a bother.
Comments:
As no one seems to be interested in making simple, lightweight, torquey sport touring standard bikes anymore, I have never found anything to replace this bike with. Rode a Yamaha FZ750 for a while but the heft and busy peaky engine not really to my liking so I am going back the old R. The new BMWs are so lumpy and massive and ugly and they don't make a comparable 650 anymore. They're all 1100s. The clean lines, simple understated beauty and elegance of this bike are hard to beat.

Accessories: Luftmeister faring, samsonite hard bags
Modifications: I replaced the rings, cleaned up the pistons, had the heads rebuilt at the local BMW dealership. Rebuild cost was around $550 which included re-welding and machining one of the exhaust pipe ports that stripped when I took of the exhaust flange nut. The rebuild did alot for the power of the bike. The side stand was tweaked and the center stand was some POS after market item so I order used ones over the internet for about half the cost of new.

Accessories: Rifle fairing; BMW hard bags; Progressive Shocks; Brown sidestand; sport bars (not the LS bars). RevPak TourBag, which sits on passenger portion of saddle and overhangs onto bags.
Modifications: Custom seat from Rich's Upholstery in Seattle gets my feet closer to the ground. And it's more comfortable than the old Corbin! Pretty, too!
Problems: Fall 98 got the "recall" snowflake wheel (from 1984!); recall was originally for R80s, but R65s have the same front wheel. Kudo's to BMW for honoring this 14 years later. Electrical: had intermittant 'engine shut' off problem. Changed out coil (small crack); ignition unit (just because - probably heat sink compound would have been sufficient); kill switch (just because); ignition switch (bad). Finally, Hall Sensor (bad). Runs like a champ now. [above surgery over 9 month or so period]
Comments:
Love it! Wonderful first bike; plan on it being a keeper. Unlike some other comments, I've had no problem with the electrical system *output* -- I run an electric vest (or jacket) and commute daily, sometimes in stop-and-go traffic. Rear seal and clutch replaced 1st quarter 2000. Now it's time for paint ... Planning to buy a 1982 R65LS. NOTE: bike remains the reliable backup to a Ducati and a HD. ;-)
For Sale: Never! (the bike) However ... anyone looking for a Right Hard Bag ... contact me. OR - if you have a Left Hard Bag FS, contact me as well. ;-)
