|
Comments:
This is the best bike I have ever owned, and the longest I have ever kept the same bike. I have owned Fireblades, FZR, GSXR's, etc.The finish and reliability are second to none. Its also the quickest and best handling. Suzuki had really sorted the TLS by the final 'Y' model. I am still on the original clutch. This was beefed up from the 'X' model on. The last model also has the same rear damper as the TLR with larger fluid capacity. I ride the bike really hard, but have never had any handling problems. Only problem with bike has been rear tyre consumption, usually 12-1500 miles, however I am now upto 4000 miles on BT020's. And they grip as good as my previous D207/208's.

| Modifications: I removed the stock steering damper. The bike is a lot easier to handle at low speed, with no head shake problems anywhere. I am light(150lbs.) so I set the suspension to the owners manuel light settings. Which works perfectly for me.I also trimmed the rear fender/licens plate mount.Oh yea, removed the stock tool kit to save weight:O] | |||
| Problems: Well before the 3 recalls,Tank, Ing.,Steering dampner. I had the ing. done on the recall but it still coughs and sputters at 3000. The biggest problem that I had to get use to was the slipping clutch. I can't just wack it wide open at 65mph, when I do the clutch slips a lot. 6/6/03-I got the update clutch from my local dealer(part # 21440-02F00 $130.00). After installing the new clutch, there is absolutly no slipping any more. This updated clutch fixes the problem 100%. What a beast the bike is now. | |||
|
Comments:
The power is a lot better with the 1 tooth smaller front sprocket. The bike turns through the corners effortlessly. I have the stock suspension adjusted perfectly for my riding. This TL can handle any corner perfectly, better than any other bike I had. The new M1 Sportec rear tyre is an amazing bun! The bike just keeps getting better and better. AS OF 6/10/04 I TRADED THE TL IN FOR A NEW APRILIA SL1000 FALCO. MY TL WAS GREAT TO ME FOR ALL THE TIME I OWNED IT.

Comments:
Well, it's finally time to say goodbye to the old girl. I sold off all my parts and am trading in a mostly stock bike for an 01 Aprilia MIlle R. It was just too good a deal to walk away from. I will miss the TLS, it was a great bike and will make somebody else very happy.

| Problems: had a stumble from 3-4 grand like everyone else, then i did the T.R.E. and power commander and it is gone now. i can't say which one did the trick because i did them both at the same time. seemed like it wallowed in curves but then i had the forks done and installed the rear shock and it handles like a dream now. i have a little problem with the clutch now. have taken it apart and put it back together numerous times, but can't figure it out. it seems like the throw-out bearing is keeping the clutch disengaged.....wierd. it doesn't happen very often but when it does it is annoying. other than that it runs like a dream | |||

next mods are camshafts from web-cams, and high compression pistons from wiseco. along with carbon fiber bodywork gas tank and wheels. i would like to get it under 400 pounds with about 130-140 horsepower.

| Bikes Owned: | 4 | ||
| Accessories: Security items, chain oiler (Chaintec; had to rebuild it to stop it leaking onto the rear brake and tyre) | |||
| Modifications: K&N filter (as a long-life replacement - no power gain expected and none observed) | |||
| Problems: Rear cylinder barely ignites under 4500rpm by cold/damp weather, coughs and sputters between 2500 and 4500rpm pretty much all the time now - new spark plugs, throttle bodies and TPS adjustment have no impact. As every other TLS owner noticed, the rear shock's preload doesn't seem to be meant to be altered... Had the frame cracking problem, i.e. the frame's top mounting point for the rear damper snapped together with both corresponding bolts. A new frame was fitted under warranty. No major issue thereafter until it hit 22,000 miles, by which time the rear wheel and suspension rod's bearings were shot, the front discs warped, the rear brake pad retaining pins seized and the exhaust had blown its second set of gaskets. Fairly loud ticking noise ever since the first few thousands of miles. Slipping clutch was fixed at 30000 miles with new discs (old ones were just at the bottom of the thickness range) and mainly new, stronger springs. About to replace steering head bearings at 38,000 miles. | |||
|
Comments:
The whole bike's a delight (but could be more robust). Not extremely powerful at high revs (I reckon mine wouldn't dream of reaching 110bhp), but the mid-range torque and resulting acceleration are brilliant. It is rather demanding and will give you a warning whenever you lose focus on your riding, but when you get it right it's quite rewarding and can really beat anything else. Fuel consumption is quite reasonable at a very steady 45mpg(UK) in touring mode (125 miles to reserve with another 30-35 to go), down to 30mpg in sports mode, and tyre wear is OK if you ride smoothly (rear up to 4000 miles). I strongly recommend BT010s - I found they provide a much better feel than Metzelers (MEZ1, MEZ1-Racing and MEZ3) in all circumstances, most noticeably on the wet. Quite comfortable at 6'3" although you can't read the clocks with the OE screen. Handling is good provided you set up the suspension carefully, albeit obviously not 996-standard at that price - and it doesn't age too well.

| Problems: Water pump twice, second time I found that the washer under the 6mm bolt gets overlooked & can also cause leakage along the impeller shaft. Skimmed the impellor face under the washer to provide a good seal. Sorted! More recently, the dogs on 6th driven gear sheared off, casuing no drive to 3rd gear & considerable mess to the engine internals. THe bike is now being dismantled for spares. | |||

No frame or rear linkage problems, whatsoever. As for hadnling, I guess its relative to what you're used to, but its the safest, well planted bike I've ever owned. Great fun at Rockingham too.

Airbox mods- removed flapper valve+related stuff-cleaned the inside of airbox a bit, now it makes more induction WROOM..good, Changed to race pegs->and now back to originals. Updated clutch to EBC 10% stronger heavy dyty springs and plates, hopefully it now holds.. Öhlins rear shock. Scorpion mufflers, helibars. relocated temp sensor to termostat housing(originally at the radiator)-recomended...
| Problems: Previous owner made factory recalls, sometimes clucth slips, rotary damper is not very good.. Öhlins fixed that. Adjusted valves at 21500km , all valves little tight, ~0,07 intakes, ~0,17 exhausts. | |||
|
Comments:
great bike, wheelies, stoppies, everything is easy, some stalls when cold. Good handling tip, Because the fuel injection is a bit triggerhappy at corners, when coming off/on the throthle during cornering-> to make things easier-keep the fast idle lever on when driving, this way it is much smoother. The fast idle lever is not a shoke, follow the cable, it just keeps idle faster.. Also race drivers use this method.

| Problems: When it was new, the clutch did want to slip when you twisted the throttle enough. I installed springs from a Husky 610, they are longer and heavier. The slipper clutch feature is not as functional, but my riding style never depended on it anyway. Also had the upgraded{?} brains installed. Replaced clutch and cable @ 20,000. I suspect the stiffer springs helped eat the cable up {it wore through the inner sheath}. Clutch itself would have lived longer, but for the 40 or so dragstrip passes... Best pass 10.93. No other illnesses, runs strong. | |||

The bike was almost un-ridable at low speeds (25-40mph) Took it back to Orange County Suzuki and they tried again. Surging was not as bad but still a real pain-in-the-ass. The throttle is extremely sensitive around the 1/8 open position, makes bike hard to handle at low speeds on a bumby road (like all roads in L.A.) 11/11/99 - Got a hole in the front exhaust header just before taking it back in to get the surging problem resolved. Will have to buy a new #1 header before Suzuki can work on the bike. An aftermarket belly pan will help prevent road debris from attacking the very low exhaust header, oil radiater and oil filter. 12/22/99 After 5 weeks in the shop, the dealer finally got a factory tech from Suzuki to come out and troubleshoot my bike. The tech determined that the TPS/Throttle Body assembly was defective. My bike runs good now with very slight surgeing. An ECU remap with the Yosh Black Box smoothed out the stumbling almost completely. Too bad Suzuki didn't figure it all out in the first place. 4/5/2000, clutch slipping, Suzuki replaced complete clutch assy with hi-po clutch replacement.

Comments:
At 2000 miles I already knew that bone stock this one has more torque than you'll ever need on the street. As delivered from Suzuki the steering is very slow. You really have to muscle it to make fast L/R/L transitions. Once dialed-in I think I'm gonna have lots of fun on this one! :) 11/11/99 This bike is a real pain in the ass but the torque makes it all worth the hassle. The stock suspension is marginal so I will probably do some fork revalving, spring changes and see what I can do with the rr rotary damper. I'll probably replace it with a Lindemann upgrade. The T1000S definitely has a lot of potential. I know now that I'll never ride a 4 banger again. Twins Rule! 12/22/99 In stock trim w/BMC Air Filter and Yosh RS3 race slip-ons, the TL1000S is making ~73 lb/ft torque and 116+ HP. The torque is awesome and real fun to ride. The stock suspension is marginal with the back end prone to slide out easily. Now that the motor is running well, I'll spend some time trying to dial in the stock suspension and see if I can get it to behave better. 6/15/2001 - Installed 750 lb./in. linear rate rear spring and 0.90 kg/mm linear rate RaceTech front fork springs. With the upgraded springs, the TLS feels like a completely different bike! Handling is vastly improved and going to 10Wt oil in the forks gives me some badly needed damping that the stock forks don't have. 6/2002 - I ripped off the stock rotary damper and replaced it with the Lindemann/Penske conventional shock unit. The difference is day and night. The major suspensions problems I was having were caused by the rotary damper piece of junk. Even at the lightest settings, the rotary damper binds up the rear and transmits shock waves up to the front. With the Penske installed, even the stock front forks immediately work better. The problems I thought I had in the front were actually caused by the rear rotary unit binding up. The stock forks with 10wt. oil and aftermarket spring actually work just fine on the street. On the track however, the stock forks still lack sufficient damping. 7/2001 - Took the front forks to RaceTech and had them install the GoldValve kit and revalve rebound damping. They also beefed up the springs rate to 0.95kg/mm from the 0.90 kg/mm I had on there. With the 0.95 kg springs I can go down to 35mm of rider sag which quickens the steering without hard bottoming of the forks - real nice on the track but a bit stiff on the street. With the 0.90 I can get a nice cushy ride with minimal bottoming with rider sag cranked up to 30mm of rider sag, the tradeoff being slightly slower steering but still perfectly nice on the street. I'm now either used to the TLS chassis, or the upgrades have worked out perfectly. My TLS is now just about absolutely fabulous!

I love this bike! I fit into it like a glove compared to what other reports suggest. I don't have alot of miles yet, But I'm ready for this year. The wheelies are great at 5000 rpm in first gear and even better at at 55 mph. This is a serious machine and all my friends love it as well. Also I've been smoking my buddy on his 919 like a cheep cigar. Best bike I've owned to date so don't believe all the stuff u read about its perfomance.

While new to the TL, I have always longed for a twin and the chance to own this clean, well taken care of bike presented itself to me recently. I work at a motorcycle shop (dyno included) so if you have a TL and want to see some horsepower numbers, email me and I'll set up a dyno day!
