Experience: 20 years street riding, I took Kieth Code's racing school in 1996 and have had the bug ever since.
Bikes Owned: 4
Accessories: Heli- bars, tinted speedscreen, Spiegel steel braded brake lines.
Modifications: Rear fender eliminator kit, M4 full exhaust and pipe, K&N air filter. I just installed Michelin Pilot Sports. They are fantastic and well worth the cost.
Problems: The ever-present stumble around 2500-3000 RPM when engine not completely warm. I also have corrected slight oil seapage from left side cover. UPDATE..11/02/01...Slight oil leakage has turned nasty. I replaced the cover gasket and leak still persists although not as bad. I replaced the counter shaft sprocket shaft seal and o-ring. Now it,s leak free and running great.
Comments:
Having owned ZX11,s the past 10 years, this bike is a step in a different direction. I must say that I have never had so much fun on a bike. I have read about many problems with fuel delivery and am encouraged with the repairs but quite honestly, I know very little about the fuel injection on this bike. Are these repairs something I can do myself or does the dealer have to do them? When I bought the bike, I was told it was remapped. If that's the case then it needs to be done again. Thanks...

Problems: Well- Started making a low down noise so I took it into the bike shop. Stopped into the bike shop yesterday the mechanic handed me a torch and told me to shine it past where the clutch normally lives. Doing so I asked him what the shiny bits in the sump were, he stated "that's your big end bearings, parts of the crank and the golden bits are your conrod. Yep it gets worse. But all covered under warranty. Can't complain about the service they lent me a TLR while my TLS was being re built. All work covered by Suzuki. The loan of the TLR was a setup it is a great bike that really has some go and handeling to match. I think I've discovered my next steed. 6 weeks later and the bike is back good as new, no explination for the problem, never been seen before. The TLS is nice and tight but that is just a matter of Km's. Yes the TLR was a nice bike but it is great to have my TLS back safe and sound. So the bike is back and running like a Swiss Watch done about 1200km on the new motor and it's running better than ever. Prior to the re build I had a little oil in the air box (?blow by from the front head) well that gone.As the motor frees up it will be interesting to see how this thing goes.
Comments:
Love the bike Buttttttttt. I'll see how it goes following the rebuild. Back in love with this bike there is just something about having a hand built engine and there is a sensuality about a Vee Twin. My daughter tells me this bike is female as nothing male could look that good!!

BLACK 2000 TL1000SX (Updated: 2002.6.19)

Owner: Tim Nunan           Phone: 64 4 934 2326
Email to Tim Nunan
Location: New Zealand -- Wellington New Zealand
Experience: 24, dirt, road
Bikes Owned: 12
Accessories: Heli bars, pack rack, airhorns (louder than the silent original) watch secured next to ignition switch, headlight cover. Two Brothers pipes. Been using a throttle rocker. Allows the palm of your hand to assist throttle operation. Makes a difference, no aches from keeping the throttle wound on.
Modifications: Mirrors spaced out 1.5 inches each side to see past elbows, front mudguard extended to protect oil cooler, GSX600R chainguard to replace original spade fitted to New Zealand TL's, K&N air filter. Rear MEZ1 replaced at 4,800Km with narrower 180/55 MEZ4 which speeds up handling. May'02,fitted Ohlins rear shock. What a transformation! Better handling, more comfortable. Front end now shown up so will fit Ohlins front springs. Recently fitted a Metzler Sportec front tyre. Very secure on a recent 1800km ride including ice & grit.
Problems: Nothing major like experienced by 97-98 TL's. Occassional unexpected stalling. Oil blown up into the airbox after high speed running but was expecting that after reading about this trait on the registry. Paint quality absolute crap. Rising oil level early on but no such problem since I started turning the idle control full on when starting at all times, as suggested via the owners registry. Pipes set off car alarms! Need to wear ear plugs out of town. Seat is crap after a couple of hours but a Corbin replacement is $717 here in New Zealand. Have now had custom sheepskin cover made, enables longer time in saddle. March 2002, oil leak from clutch cover & leak from small hole under water pump. Both fixed under warranty by Wellington Motorcycle Centre. New seals etc. Great service. Clutch slip & abrupt take up twice on recent 1,000km weekend. No fault found by dealer. Something loose under the tank, can't find it though. May'02, less than 200km since replacement of water pump seal, failed again. No option but to continue recent 1800km ride topping up coolant from time to time. Replaced again by the dealer with no questions asked.
Comments:
After years of 4's thoroughly enjoy the power characteristics of the V twin. Need to take care off the line & in the wet though. Couldn't afford a Ducati & the Guzzi Sport was cramped. Was about to purchase a VTR1000 but a magazine test sugested the TL was probably more comfortable for anyone over 6 foot & they were right. More of a hodrod than the VTR, certainly quicker at the top end. Haven't tried the top end fully but have let it wind to 250. Gets 42 (15km/lt) to 51mpg (17.8km/lt) at 120 to 140km/hr. Not interested in saving gas but it just helps with planning when to stop for the next fillup. No slow speed stumbling so Suzuki must have got the chip sorted. Handles OK but looking at alternatives for the rear shock. Awaiting arrival of next Ohlins shipment but cost is $1500NZ. Mainly used for 500km blasts up the North Island. March 2002, motor fully run in. It will drink gas & keep the Arabs in the manner they're accustomed to - at 180 to 230km/hr, around 32 to 37mpg. Just had another front tyre fitted. Apparently the Metzler OE replacement for the MZ1 is the M1 Sportec. Anyone got any feedback on performance? Amazing bike riding roads here in New Zealand. Thanks to Dave at Canyonchasers for instructions / pictures on fitting the Ohlins shock. No problems.

Modifications: None yet. Early model ,97 SV, so need to check for mods (ECU) etc. Desperately want loud(ish) pipes for the noise only - happy with the power.

Problems: (05/03/02)Bike is smoking after high revs. I think that the BMW dealer I bought it from overfilled the oil and blew a bunch into the air box. It was soaked! Drained the oil to the low fill line....still smoking, but I think I may have missed some oil in the box. Will reopen and clean. Anyone else had this problem? Could it be something else? Dealer isn't sure. (05/05/02) All smoked out. Must have been the oil line, bikes done smoking. Something to be aware of I suppose. Bike's running great! (06/14/02) Well, bike is smoking again. I have a feeling that perhaps a valve guide seal is busted or worn. Not bad, but it's eating a bit of oil. Damn thing is ticking....ticking....and ticking some more. Driving me nuts, but I know it's just the motor being itself.
Comments:
Great Bike! Torque is simply a thing of beauty. It's a bit twichy at low revs, but I think a PCII will fix that. Rear suspension sucks...will replace with Ohlins when I've got the $$, gold valves in front eventually...I think I like the TLS better than the TLR. The gearbox of the R is a piece 'o crap. Had all sort of trouble. TLS's feels like butter. Feels much lighter than the R too, suspension and gearing feels about the same. (06/14/02) Installed the PCII. That should have been the FIRST thing I did when I got this bike. Whoa! What a difference. All twichyness is gone and bike is putting out more power, especially on top. One word about the PCII though: Dyno Jet has some SERIOUS Quality Control problems! Between my TLR and this TLS I've gone through 4 Power Commanders. Two were bad. One's buttons were defective and the other internals were non-operative. Bike wouldn't even turn over, just spit back bad FI codes. So, after you buy one (if you do) make sure it's good.
For Sale: Power Commander II for a 2000-2001 TL1000R. Brand new, never used, TLR was stolen and it doesn't fit my TLS :-( $250. email--> demeter_r@hotmail.com

Comments:
Great bike, love the awesome power and nimble handling. I don't care what everyone else says about the ROTARY rear suspension, it works great for me. I mostly commute to work and sport tour. (Geisinger Miracle Motorcycle Tour '99, I had to bum a push start from a Harley rider..then I puked from the fact that a Harley pilot had to give MEEEE a push start)Could use a fuel gauge. Starts easy w/fast idle. I'm heartbroken because of the engine bearing problem. Not sure what I am going to do about it. Any suggestions are welcome!

Great Bike, Wanted to try a really light bike that was easier to turn. Now have an R6. The TL was the BEST bike I've owned in 20 years of riding by far. It had bags of personality and was a very capable track tool, The only thing missing was too much weight and not enough clearance. It was also a great touring bike, I'll never forget showering titanium throughout the Rockie Mountains with knees grinding along with a tank bag and full luggage! A real shame Suzuki did not continue it's development - I wanted a GSX750 with an updated TL motor! My purchase would certainly have been different than it is now! - Highly recommended from this Guy!
