Red 2001 TL1000S (Updated: 2001.8.27)

Usage: 9,000 kilometers, Street/Sport, Touring.
Tires: Avon Azaro Supersport
Owner: James Phillips
Email to James Phillips
Location: Australia (Eastern) -- Sydney
Experience: 7
Bikes Owned: 5
Accessories: Scotoiler (chain lube system), Givi top box, dual horns.
Modifications: 16T front sprocket. Braided front brake lines, K&N filter, carbon rear hugger, Hyperpro s/damper, Yoshi RS3 Zyclone full system. 6-pot front calipers off 95 GSXR1100 + EBC green pads. Heli handlebars + Hot Grips heated grips. Spent the usual couple of hours scraping off paranoid warning stickers. Most sophisticated mod so far: got a $10 watch, removed band, velcroed it to a little aerodynamically sculpted foam wedge stuck just below instruments, & now I've got a clock. Just need some fake carbon fibre stickers to make it really blend in. Replaced original MEZ1's with Avon Azaro Supersports AV39/AV40 (180 section rear) after 6000km. The 180 rear seems to improve steering. Avon rear is shot after 3000km, will try harder AV36.
Problems: A bit squirrely in slower corners - constantly wanting to sit up then drop down, wants to run wide. Big improvement in low-medium speed steering with Hyperpro steering damper, Backed off rear compression 4 turns & that improved cornering but still not really happy with it - want to experiment more before going expensive suspension modification route. Standard MEZ1 front tyre is too sensitive to road grooves (same complaint as everyone else) - Azaro front seems to have cured that. (6/2001) Front/rear shocks revalved + heavier springs in front by Frank Pons of Biketek in outer Sydney (for roughly half the price of an Ohlins rear shock). This has totally transformed the handling - can now throw it into corners with confidence knowing it will actually hold a line and keep its mind on the job. Heavier front springs mean I'm running less preload so small bump compliance is better than before. (7/2001) Dropped front forks 5mm - marginal difference only.
Comments:
Tried the competition baffles in the Yoshi Zyclone system for a while, but went back to standard again - found the noise got a bit wearing. 6-pot front calipers are a noticeable improvement. Heli bars make a big difference to the feel - much better for threading between traffic stopped at lights, more relaxing for wrists, better control for hoonish manoeuvres, just can't get right down over the front the same way as before if really pushing it through corners of course. Hot Grips are a real guilty pleasure on cold days. Bike just keeps getting better as it runs in. The suspension mods (see above) have been the best improvement so far.

Accessories: Harris Cans, K&N Air filter,
Modifications: Dropped front end 10mm, transformed the front end feel. 6 Pot calipers remove 5 lap brake fade on track days. Harris cans. Preload Jacked right up, compression eased off a little to improve rear end squat. TLR rear sprocket (one tooth more) to give a little more punch.
Problems: Tank Leak -FOR (fixed on recal) Stumbles -FOR. Rear suspension worked loose -fixed on warrently (Shimmed shock). Weeping oil on water pump area. Back firing seriously on the over run - it's in the garage for this right now - initial diagnosis is loose exhaust sucking in air but I've just read an entry that says it may be an ECU prob but I'd be surprised at that. Pinging/Pinking in front cylinder probably down to still being on original HT leads. Clutch slipping shimmed under warranty but now happening again but then again I'm still on the original clutch after 24000km. Symptoms of 160mph for hours on end on a Monza trip this spring!!!
Comments:
Pissed all over my rich mates who were on.... 2x 996R's 2x748R's and an SP1 round the lakeside twisties just outside of Zurich, nuff said, I'd get another if I had the money. Why oh why have Suzuki dropped this model instead of relaunching it. Anyone that has ever owned one has not said anything other than "Great bike" just needs a little refinement re the daft little niggles, love it" etc. P.S D&K were great with me, gave me a courtesy ZX7 for two weeks while the warranty jobs were on etc.

Modifications: Planning on Corbin saddle to minimize forward slide on seat. Any feedback welcome /// 8/2/02 have not doen the Corbin- not sure if I will. I did just swap out my worn MEZ1's after 2400 miles- and replace them with BT-56SS- Ran the Bstones in a bit last night and they are really nice. Grip and feel are awesome- and wear should be better than the MEZ1
Problems: Occassional little chug around 3-4 thousand RPM during constant throttle. Never any issues rolling on or off throttle. //// 8/2/01 had to bring the bike to the shop last month because the top bolt for location the dampener of the rotary dampener system actually fell out. I noticed a blown shock feeling right away- saw the problem and rode to the shop for them to fix it right away. Bike still chugs at 2500-3000 rpm's so I just don't ride it there. Seems better not to lug the engine anyway. Only downside is high city riding temps.
Comments:
Amazing execution by Suzuki. Great Style & Handling. Now I have got the 600 mile svc. for a ding of $ 169.00 . The bike is running really smooth, other than a few off throttle chugs here and there. I changed the suspension settings for slightly less preload front, and took twice as much out on the rear, along with slightly increased dampening. The bike tracks better over the choppy roads here in N CA with these settings, and the rear end has a great feeling "compression" set up during cornering with these settings. This engine has tons of power!!! 4/30/01 This just gets better and better. hard punching motor, sweet brakes, tons of cornering clearance, awesome exhaust, great gas mileage....no complaints besides not enough time to ride. 8/2/01 Still can't get enough of the bike. Top end rush is huge, mid range torque is huge, power wheelies are part of riding the thing, just a blast to corner.

Modifications: Suzuki steering damper, changed the chain kit for a shorter 16/40 one, and the rear tyre for a narrower one.
Problems: Previous owner had a engine break down... (crankshaft was dead...).
Comments:
Changing the chain kit ratio was a revelation for this engine! But more than anything else: change that shit of a rear tyre as soon as possible: mounting a 180/55 D207 (with a front D207 too) Made the bike more agile, more neutral, and even more stable (didn't understand this one). This and quite a soft rear damper setting make the bike very pleasant on small contryside roads even bumpy.

Accessories: Lockhart Tank Bag, K&N Filter, Power Commander II
Modifications: 16 tooth sprocket on order.
Problems: I thought I had evaded most of the problems but today was a bad day. I had the clutch upgraded and all was good with that. I just developed the clutch case leak, I think I have that fixed. Now my gas tank leaks and the dealer says they already did the recall on the gas tank so it is up to me to fix it now. Lack of rubber on rear tire is also a problem.
Comments:
I upgraded from a Katana 600, big upgrade! I have ridden a lot of big boar off road bikes so I was very familiar with having big low end torque. It is deffinately a bike I will be keeping for a long time. I highly reccomend the Power Commander, it does wonders. I had the K&N from the beginning so I can't say what difference it made. I am debating the best exhaust to put on any suggestions? The only thing I am curious is did your tl1000s pick up the front end stock without clutching? Mine needs a bit of a hill bump right now otherwise I have to clutch it up. I am hoping the new sprocket witll take care of that. All in all a great bike.
