GREEN 1997 TL1000SV (Updated: 1998.11.25)

Tires: METZLER MEZ1
Owner: Ron Filler

Location: USA (SouthCentral) --
Experience: riding-25 yrs; raced motocross-15 yrs; road raced-5 yrs
Bikes Owned: 25+
Modifications: Slipping the fork tubes up in the triple clamps about 3/8 inches will really help the turning. Feels more like my GSXR-750 now. No instability problems with the factory (recall) steering damper. Also, be sure the idle RPM is set at 1200 for the replacement engine module-makes it work better; this is in a service manual addendum.
Problems: Just wanted to pass on that the only real problem was the clutch slipping. After replacing the fiber plates and back torque limiter-no help; then installed Barnett springs-some help; finally noticed on this registry someone talked about the left side adjuster-this is the answer so far; just back off this adjustment enough to give the release rod a little more play. This adjustment is independent of the lever/cable free play and must be adjusted separately.
Comments:
Great bike with the fuel injection and clutch slipping problems alleviated. Very similar to my Ducati 907IE with more power. Ride is a little more like a racer, though; I really haven't tried to remedy this with spring/damping adjustments much. As an ex-racer, it just feels natural. Bar position is a little extreme for the street. Understand there is an aftermarket fix for this.

At one point the bike wouldnt't hold a charge took it to the dealer and after one day they said it started fine but when they went to try it after the leak and new tank it wouldn't start and then tried to find the problem. It was a bad battery.

Comments:
Don't waste your money on a aftermarket exhaust! The stock pipes flow just fine and keeps this ultra hooligin bike stealth! For plug fouling promlems try the 8EK plugs. And what ever you do don't use the choke on this bike, all it does is raises the idle into plug fouling rich condition. I also don't crack the throtle open when the bike has not warmed up for short time. Since I've done these two things, I have not had to change the high doller plugs in this beast. I have two TL's street bike must go.
For Sale: Must sell this so I can race my other TL S Next season. 6500obo. Possible west coast dilivery.

getting suspension dialed in, works great. trying to get steering(front ride height)right. Looking for more neutral steering, wants to run wide, but I'm getting there. Power is great. Problems: ENGINE CUTS ON TO ONE CYLINDER AT HIGH REVS (7000 TO 8000), AND THROWS OUT LOTS OF SMOKE. THIS CLEARS UP AFTER TWO / THREE SECONDS AND THE BIKE RUNS SWEET. THERE ARE NO MECHANICAL NOISES WHEN IT DOES THIS. ITS HAPPENED THREE TIMES IN EIGHT MONTHS. UPDATE...BAH ! IT DID IT THREE TIMES TODAY, COULD THIS BE "TOO MUCH OIL" (FUEL AND OIL)??? ITS STILL RUNNING THE STANDARD THERMOSTAT(NORM 50 DEG), COULD IT BE RUNNING TOO COLD ? STILL ON ORIGINAL ECU, THERMOSTAT, TANK AND CLUTCH (HAS SLIPPED A LITTLE). ANY IDEAS ?

Modifications: 10/17/98. Had GMD Computrak in Framingham, Ma revalve and upgrade to .95 springs in the front suspension. Much better. No more clunk in front end, yeah! Peter did a great job correcting my bikes suspension!
Problems: Old note>The front end is still noisyl...this is my biggest complaint that never got resolved. I have stripped entire nose and confirmed it to be a clunking from the forks. 10/22/98 Peter at Computrak did an outstanding job fixing suspension, The rear rotary damper was faulty which had been clunking from original purchase. He had one on shelf to swap out and it fixed my rear clunking. He also revalved the forks and it smoothed out front suspension. No more dives when applying brakes, and no more clunking. Front is firm but plush. I should have gone there first. Dealer's suck! No clue! No help! Thanks GMD Computrak. The cost was $575 and worth every penny.
Comments:
This TL is now fixed. 1 1/2 years and 4 recalls later, this bike runs and handles the way it should have from the dealer. Starts 1st try, runs smooth and strong, suspension is responsive and quiet. No other leaks or problems. I think I'll keep it now and invest in some pipes.

Tires: D207
Owner: Mark

Location: USA (SouthWest) -- San Diego
Experience: 23yrs riding, 15yrs racing
Bikes Owned: 31
Accessories: Kerker Cans, ceramic coat headers, kevlar brake lines, modified dampner, revalved forks, rear ride height adjuster.
Modifications: I am a pass factory mech (Honda) and have spent considerable time working the bugs out on this machine. For your info: To fix the surging/missing and cold running problem, buy the TL 98 thermostat housing and relocate your engine temp switch from the radiator. The CPU gets bad data (cold readings) from the radiator and then runs rich. I get 38-42 mpg. You can change the oil in the dampner (run 7.5 Spectro) and construct a heat shield to protect the unit from the header heat, these mods were really appreciated after 15minutes on the track (the unit used to fade considerably). I installed a ride height adjuster and raised the rear .6". Toss the factory dampner and ensure you stay on top of the steering head bearing tightness. Dunlop 207s are the most wicked tire I have ever tried. Do these ever let go? Every 1,500 miles check the sync on the throttle bodies, AND fine tune them with the air bleed screws, not the throttle stops screws. The Dyno Jet Commander does work, just dont expect power increases, just improved drivability. I pulled out the factory dent in the pipe where the chain runs over it and welded on a shield. DO not get full system pipes, they are too large of diameter and you will lose bottom and midrange, and gain on the top only. Smaller headers give better throttle response as well.
Problems: The surging, cold running problems, and hesitation were solved by new ECU, throttle valve tuning, and install of 98 thermo housing. See above.
Comments:
I found that the bike does not welcome really hanging off like my ZX9 and ZX7 did. Ride it like a Duck, in the fast stuff and get off it in the slow stuff.

Accessories: Two Brothers Shotgun carbon fiber race exhaust system, Zero Gravity smoke windscreen, flush mount front marker lights and mini-stalk rear markers, braided oil lines and Kevlar brake lines.Just added DynoJet Power Commander-one word- WOW! As delivered no stumbles, no missing, good cold performance, eliminates abrupt throttle response and significant power and torque increases. If you have $399.00 buy one it will transform the bike and your riding enjoymjent.
Modifications: Pulled forks up @5mm, adjusted suspension to settings suggested in the Sport Twin web site, removed all warning stickers, reflectors, passenger footpegs and the funky Japanese looking "pant guards" attached to the footpeg mountings. Removed the factory steering damper because it was too heavy(both in weight and steering feel)and removed the turn signals. Flush mounts up front look bitching.
Problems: Would not start and would buck at 3000 to 4500 rpm when first delivered. The dealer replaced the ECU and the bike ran fine for a short while and then would not start. Turned out that the low speed sensors have to be recalibrated whn the new ECU is installed. If the dealer does not recalibrate then the plugs will foul as mine did. After recalibration one year ago, the bike has run fine although it occaisionally stumbles at partial throttle settings at steady rpm levels between 3000 and 4000 rpm. The bike is extremely cold blooded since adding the race exhaust system and misses badly until reaching 140 degrees (f). It also seems to run rich when cold. I never had this problem until adding the free flow exhaust. Clutch also slips at 6000 rpm in third and up.Also cannot adjust the clutch and brake levers down far enough because of the wiring connections on the bottom of the lever brackets. I have not had any of the other commonaly reported "problems" with the engine. Bike does headshake over uneven/rough pavement when heeled over and under power. Once, I thought I was going to lose it in heavy traffic when crossing an intersection at @35 mph and under light acceleration. When I hit the rough pavement the front end began to tank slap like my old dirt bikes when I came into a rough corner too hot. Fortunately a heavy dose of throttle lifted the front wheel and cured the headshake.
Comments:
Love the motor, the power and torque delivery are awesome, predictable and easily controlled. Mine has been reliable since the initial fix except the clutch slippage. The sound since adding the exhaust system is too cool and sounds like a formula one race car. It literally sets off car alarms in my office parking lot. Handling on smooth pavement is exemplary and stable up to the 160mph I've had the bike but can be twitchy on the rough. I've read about a purple steering damper that mounts "a la Ducati" and is sold in the UK. Does anyone ahve experience with the unit and where it can be bought?

Accessories: Only the steering damper supplied by Suzuki. Although this tokk one year to get, as the dealer here in Malaysia is a slack jerk!
Modifications: Changed to twin horns. Now using Pirelli Dragon MR 02, and very happy. Riding at the 240kph plus mark almost constantly on the roads here, I have found the dragon heats up quick and sticks. Only get about 4500 miles per tyre. But hey, it's worth it.
Problems: Suzuki are a useless bunch of no hopers, not one dealer here, nor Suzuki Australia, will help me to get the free safety recall parts. I have to pay a dealer to get them etc. Well, that's certailny changed lately let me tell you. There has been a change of management and it looks like I will be getting all the recall bits.
Comments:
I am an Australian living here in Malaysia, this bike has made me a lot of friends with whom I ride regularly. Best bike I have ridden in 30 years. Made me stop and asses my riding skills. Ride it hard and fast, but never forget it's the boss! Have not touched suspension settings, but not racing it on the track either. Would kill for some cheap Yoshi Carbon mufflers, too expensive here with the economic climate rooted.
