Green 98 zx9R (Updated: 2001.6.28)
Purchased: 2/98
Usage: 30,000 miles, Street/Sport, Racetrack.
Tires: Dunlop 207/ 207GP-track
Owner: Larry Smith

Location: USA (NorthCentral) -- Michigan
Experience: 30yrs street riding - 20yrs motocross - occasional Track days.
Bikes Owned: many
Accessories: Hey guys, The r1 forum has kindly provided a spot for us ZX9 guys. There is not much action now, but I thought I would pass along the information. It's a good oportunity to share information. www.yzf-r1-forum.Valentine one radar detector
Modifications: braided steel brake lines front & rear (Muzzys) EBC HH sintered pads,Ohlins 0.9 staight rate fork springs, re-valved forks, Penske rear shock, Zero gravity double bubble screen, Targa solo seat, ZX6 race kit clutch springs, redline synthetic oil (noticable improvement in shifting action) Update: Akropovic full exhaust with titanium muffler, Ivans jet kit, +4 factory ignition advancer
Problems: Suspension spring rate was way too soft for track duty.(Update: Recently upgraded to a Penske shock and re-valved the forks. the choppy feel is now gone.) I have had to re-adjust my clutch at the handlebar after hard track use (slipping) (Update: I installed Muzzys ZX6 supersport clutch springs and it completely cured the clutch slipping problem. I measured the clutch plates and friction plates at the time of the spring change and everything was in spec) Front fender is cracking around the mounting holes at the fork. I have seen other ZX9's with the same problem. Update: Added the exhaust, jet kit and ignition advancer. Waaaay better everywhere! Sounds great! Jet kit is well engineered with no dips in power anywhere. The lean stumble that all 98/99 9R's have between 2 & 3 grand is gone. The advancer gives better snap when cracking the throttle at the apex. All in all, great (but expensive) additions to an already great bike!
Comments:
I'm still happy with this bike three years down the line. It has never broken down or failed me in any way and it has been run plenty hard. After some suspension mods it has proven to be a far better track bike than it is generally given credit for and it is absolutely the best street bike ever made.

Modifications: Triumph Daytona 955i hand grips installed, Powdercoated wheels Silver sparkle (looks fab.) Also custom drilled and inst. a JT (steel) rear sprocket one tooth greater (42).
Problems: Yea, all the salesman younger than I can wheelie my bike better than I do. CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHERE TO REFRENCE: THE SHIMMING OF THE STOCK CARB NEEDLES THAT M/C-ist MAG. AND OTHERS HAVE CLAIMED IS "PERFECT" FOR CLEANING UP THE SUMBLE @ 4-5K RPM...IT'S SUPOSSED TO BE IDEAL AND WAY CHEAP TO DO ?? LET ME KNOW!??!
Comments:
I don't miss the 4-5 MPH lost (top end) due to the shorter gearing, Motor gains RPMs more quickly and front end lofts equally well (at moderate throttle) as my pals mod. '98ZX-9R (jett & full MUZZY w/stock gearing), although his bike under full throttle will have you holding your breath, it's scary fast.
For Sale: I sold: my 1994 YZF (in the Picture) it's a 5400 mile bike, and it's @ parkcycle.com in Canton, Ohio. Cheers!!

Modifications: I've put a full muzzy on, factory Jet kit.
Problems: Dealer forgot to mount the muzzy so they'll do it at the first service for free. Breaking it in sucks, but is totally worth it.
Comments:
I've only been able to turn the thing cause I am still breaking it in but it falls into slower speed corners much easier then my 98-7R did, shifts smoother and looks better. The seven though felt more stable at higher speed corners. I let you now what I think as soon as I hit red line. Damn I can't wait to hit red line. I get the first service done in 4 days, then she'll be good to go.

Comments:
Word of advice. My first time out a couple of guys showed me the art of avoiding photo radar tickets by bending plate up and this netted me a $230 fine. This bike flies! Can't really compare it to anything besides an old Honda shadow 500 but every one I ride with (CBR 929, Fireblade 900, R1) say that it goes. It must, they are always in the rearview mirror on the straights.

Yellow 98 C1 (Updated: 2001.5.10)
Purchased: April 1998
Usage: 13,000 miles, Racetrack.
Tires: Perelli
Owner: Chris Astley
Email to Chris Astley
Location: UK -- Leyland
Experience: 9 years riding, 1 year racing.
Bikes Owned: 5
Modifications: Maxton fork re-valve & re-spring, Maxton Rear shock (with ride height adjuster), Harris Clip-ons (below top yolk), Harris Rearsets, Shift Tech Quickshifter, Ohlins steering damper, Micron race exhaust system, Factory billet engine casings, Carbon/Kevlar clutch casing protector, Factory gear selector spring, Bolt on sub-frame, Lap timer, Race Bodywork, Braided brake hoses.
Problems: I had to have the gearbox rebuilt as the dogs between 3rd & 4th had become worn and it kept jumping out of gear. This is a common problem on the C1, I know of at least two others that have had the same problem. The C2 had a modified gear shaft to stop movement between the gears. I had to replace four gears, which had become damaged as pieces broke off the dogs and the clutch basket, which had split down one side. NOT GOOD! The other problem I have had seems to be very common and that is the front mudguard cracking round the rear mounting holes. This is due to the mudguard hitting the fairing under heavy breaking and means that dropping the forks through the yolks to quicken the steering is not an option.
Comments:
I Love it! The ram air really works, the power just keeps on coming the harder you push it. “The faster it goes, the faster it goes!”

Comments:
Good beefy engin, bit heavy in the "twisties", Very stable frontend over bumps. Unless you up the rim size, DO NOT FIT a 190/55 rear, looks good, but very dangerous and vague. Lots and lots of power. Great all-rounder and sits with the best inspite of being an older model.

Problems: Tail, brake and instrument light fuse blew exactly one week after purchase. Problem was very intermittent for about a month. Had it into shop in Texas the first time, couldn't locate problem. Moved to southeast Florida late 2/98 and finally got fixed. Wire harness chaffing on rear subframe where it makes the turn at the aft end. Very intermittent and hard to pin down, have since gone through entire harness aft of the engine and secured from any chaffing whatsoever. No other problems whatsoever with this machine.
Comments:
Owned a 95 VFR new from 10/95 and was ready to dump some serious cash into it till this monster came out. WOW! "It's the duck's guts, Max" While I lived in Florida, I attended four Bike Weeks and did demo rides. Nothing I rode, after the initial woah, has made me want to stray from the 98. Bone stock and just broke in, she dynoed 131bhp at 1200 miles at Blaize Cycles in Miami, the BEST bike shop on the planet. Late 98, with 15k miles daily driven and no mods to power got 128bhp! Stock air filter, chain and no engine mods! This girl just loves to run. In my opinion, it IS the best all-round bike on the planet! Twenty-two and change on a new 95 VFR and this 9'r does all the same, but better! Go as slow or as fast as you want(ind 173 in 5th gear 12.2k rpms) this bike does it all.

Comments:
An obvious improvement on my B1 model. This bike replaced a TL1000R,steerings not as quick or precise as the tl but you can`t have it all. Fuel economy is very good, have had 200 mls from a tank full including a bit of reserve @ 90 mph plus. Its comfortable with good wind protection. The biking press really have got to get to grips with what normal people use bikes for,R1`s GSXR`S etc, all excellent but the 9 is without a doubt the best all round fast user friendly bike on the street. Hey! anyway we`ve only got 899 cc`s where as the rest have fuel injection, 1000 cc but as for outright speed in the right hands ZX9`s are the dog`s nadgers! My bike is stock bar the race can, my friends C2 has full Acropovic race system, ignition advancer and a 42 tooth rear sprocket. It does accellerate quicker but top end mine will out drag his, speedo reading well past 175mph. Tyres, came with BT010`s,fitted 207`s before bt`s were shagged ( had good deal on 207`s £150 a pair) Will go back to BT010`s though, as the dunlops tend to slide to easily on the rear. still trying suspension settings/tyre pressures to get better grip. Things will probably improve when the sun comes out.

Problems: CARB ICING was really bad but sorted out totally by Kawasaki with the recall on all C1/C2 models no problems since,so if your bike ain't been done get it done as it don't cost you a penny and you don't have to twat about with alchols like some of you have been doing.
Comments:
Not a bad bike still not happy with the handling. Waiting for a good dry day to set the suspension up properly at a racers practice day,not sure if I should have bought a R1 instead, depends on the handling I suppose.24/2/01 got suspension sorted what a difference this has transformed the bike totally. front forks 4 lines showing on preload, compression 4 clicks from max, rebound 5 clicks from max, forks dropped through yokes by 5mm. rear shock setup as follows spring preload wound up to give static sag of 4mm approx 2 full turns of spring adjuster, compression 2 clicks from max, rebound 4 clicks from max,ps; I weigh 15 stone, if someone trys these settings e-mail me and let me know what you thought.
For Sale: FOR SALE;- I can make all the carbon bits listed above as well as complete sets of bodywork. Drop me a line if anyone interested prices will be discussed later.

Modifications: Muzzy Port/Polish on head, Full Muzzy Titanium exhaust, Muzzy Jet Kit, K&N Filter, Muzzy Ignition Advance, PM Edge Wheels, PM 6 Piston Road Racing Brakes (which are far better than Brimbo RR54's), PM 320mm Disks (Front), Lockhart Phillips Carbon Fiber (everywhere it can be put), Toby steering Damper, Yoshimura rearsets, and some other stuff like hidden plate and so forth.
Problems: Jerkey throttle response cured by pushing ignition up 3.5 degrees OTDC and re-jetting. Initial Port and Polish of head was done incorrectly by Muzzy and caused some interesting and exciting running charateristics on test firing. Muzzy took the entire engine back free of charge, and did a complete rebuild with no questions and no charge.
Comments:
Some low end buzzing when throttle opened up in sub 3000 rpm range while in 2nd thru 6th gear. It really doesn't concern me all that much and is inherent to engine design. Overall a wonderful bike. Easy to ride, rock solid and it will hang with anything out there depending on your skill. I had the goal of making this bike more of an overall rider friendly project which would be in complete contrast with my 996 which is great fun for 50 miles or so then it's pure hell. Anyway I far and away exceeded my expectations with the ZX9R. Fast enough to take on anyone on anything, and comfortable to ride all the way from Seattle to Spokane (220 miles) without getting ass-rash.
