Modifications: Z-Technik Exhaust, Peg Lowering Kit, Corbin Saddle, Evap. Canister Relocation, will upgrade to K&N air filter soon. ***HIGHLY RECOMMENDED MOD*** Stebel Nautilus Compact Dual-Tone 12-Volt Motorcycle Air Horn, 139 dB, from Twisted Throttle.com (this thing has saved my ass time and time again making it worth every penny and minute it took to install. It will wake up any pre-occupied driver in a snap and have them realize that you are in the next lane as they blindly merge into you! Replaces stock horn very easily. BUY ONE NOW!!!!)
Problems: Nothing out of the ordinary for a Boxer, normal surging fixed periodically by synching throttles
Comments:
Love this bike! Can cruise around on it all day without being sore. Looking forward to many more years of riding it!

Yellow 2000 R1100S (Updated: 2008.7.27)

Location: Australia (Southern) -- Melbourne
Experience: 40 years riding
Bikes Owned: 20+
Accessories: BMW panniers, Ventura rack, rubber "bung" in rear wheel, QD fuel linke kit, throttle friction lock, Dual FIAMM horns, heated grips
Modifications: Staintune pipes, petrol tank expanded by RJ's BMW Motorcycle Service in Queensland, "Odyssey" dry-cell battery to suit changes to tank, Corbin seat, Fournales air suspension units, front & rear, K & N air filter, fuel injection chip to suit Staintunes, "San Jose BMW" replacement paralever torque arm, "Sports" BMW sidestand.
Problems: This bike is now fitted with all of the hand made, imported, and locally obtained BMW accessories that WB10422AXZA80186 had. I am surprised by the excellent response the "at fault" driver's insurer (GIO) had to my claim, and to their willingness to cooperate in salvaging the non-standard bits off that bike so I could be restored to same position I was in prior to the collision.
Comments:
This is a replacement for my 1998 R1100S, which was also yellow (why did they make that colour?) - it being the victim of a blind, deaf, stupid driver. Time will tell if it will be as reliable as the old one; but it does have minor differences, sometimes is the way something is made; sometimes in the way something "feels" - in this case the gearbox is reluctant and harsh when cold. Perhaps different oil will fix it.

Yellow 1998 R1100S (Updated: 2008.7.20)
Purchased: 3/01
Usage: 100,500 kilometers, Street/Sport, Touring.

Location: Australia (Southern) -- Melbourne
Experience: 40 years riding
Bikes Owned: 20
Accessories: heated grips, head protectors, BMW panniers, Ventura rack (sports & bag), rubber "bung" in rear wheel, quick detach fuel line kit, throttle friction lock, Dual FIAMM horns (w/relay)
Modifications: Staintune pipes, petrol tank expanded by RJ's BMW Motorcycle Service in Queensland, "Odyssey" battery to suit changes to tank, Corbin seat, Fournales air suspension units front & rear (plush ride, controlled movement), K & N air filter, fuel injection chip to suit Staintunes, "San Jose BMW" replacment paralever torque arm
Problems: seat (fixed), tank too small (fixed), horn too weak (fixed). Clutch replaced at 35,000 K (the bike had a hard childhood). Replaced again at 88,000 (seems adolescence is no better). Header pipes reflect use and to some may be unattractive. Otherwise, goes like a train.
Comments:
The bike is really too wide for heavy traffic with the panniers. Having now become familiar with its width, its steering and stability allow walking pace, feet up, full lock turns between cars in heavy (eg stationary) traffic. It has plenty of power, is very smooth and the transmission is snatch free. Very good in braking, and especially its ability to offer suspension movement when braking hard. The increase in the tank is well done and fits neatly. The increase comes from the area forming the void or the "saddle" shape being filled in. That area is available when ABS is not fitted. The Fournales air suspension is top notch at the front; giving a smooth ride approaching that of a tourer with the control of the sports. The rear unit is adjustable to cope easily with full luggage and pillion. It is with great regret that I report the death of this motorcyle. Cut down in its prime of life by a careless, blind, 70 year old man who could not see it before he executed a right turn across its path. The rider survived without permanent or even serious injury. A replacement R1100S has now been purchased, and a new entry will appear shortly.

Best handling bike I've ever owned. First gear is too tall to my liking, but given everything else, I'm ok with it. How about a real helmet lock? My knee-dragging days are over, but I'm not ready for the low-slow crusers yet.

Wanted one of these in 1999, but couldn't afford/justify a $13k price tag. Finally found a used version for a little over $5k with bags and a few battle scars. This bike is everything I thought it would be. If I sold it I know I'd regret it, so I'm not going to sell it.

Great bike, rode two fireblades and VFR750 prior to swopping my 954 Blade out for the 1100S. Much heavier than the Blade, but what a superb ride. The seating position is still quite aggresive but much more comfortable. Riding hard through bumpy corners which would unsettle the blade feels amazing. Love it.

Modifications: Added an oil cooler mesh cover, Cee Bailey touring windscreen, Pyramid CF hugger, Rapid Dog's BarBacks, Suburban Machinery peg lowering kit and a new horn that registers at 138dbs
Problems: Clutch Slave Cylinder failed at about 18,000 km, surprisingly tough to ride without a clutch!
Comments:
Engine is likely as smooth as it is going to get now - better but not as smooth as I would like it. Spoiled by my previous ride (K75C) I suppose. The new tires continue to impress (but the original Bridgestones lasted over 12,000 km). The Cee Bailey windscreen is very nice - greatly reduced turbulence around my head now.

I just brought this bike down at Bobs BMW Jessup MD. Ive been w/o a bike and riding for 4 yrs. Although in the past have worked in the MC industry for several yrs. as a demo/escort rider at the outdoor MC events throughout the USA. This is my first boxer as my last bike was a K series. Rode this beauty back up north to NJ on 11/28/97. What a beauty; its still not even broken in yet and looks like it just came out of the Box! In the future I will be looking to update the exhaust for now. Will probably do some pinstriping and somewhere on the bike a dedicatiion to 9/11/01. Anybody up in my area; would love to hear from.

Accessories: BMW System Panniers w/standard lids and city lids, heated grips, ABS, accessory power outlet, factory "high" bars and windscreen, factory cylinder head guards, BMW clear turnsignal lenses
Modifications: Autocom, Rapid Dog Bar Backs, Suburban Machinery "comfort" peg lowering kit, Throttlemeister, Kontour Seat makeover, ZTechnik cannister relocation bracket, Pacsafe Tank Bag, PIAA bulbs, Lowrance iWay 500c GPS, Valentine 1 radar detector, Sirius satellite radio, Cee Baily's and Parabellum tall windscreens, ram mounts for accessories. Eventually going to change the exhaust and put on a pair of Öhlins when I have the extra cash. **11/07 Update: Added BMW LED flashing auxiliary brake light. Adding Centech fuse block to consolidate hardwire connections for most of the touring gadgets listed above.
Problems: Spider cracks around mounting holes on stock windscreen. Replaced several times but keeps happening. Other than that, no problems. **5/07 update - crack developed in the reflector for the tailight/brakelight causing one of the contacts for the bulb to slide out. Kept indicating a blown bulb when it was really just losing contact. Not the best thing at night in the middle of nowhere. Replaced under warranty along with the 4th factory windscreen (cracks again) less than a month before the warranty is over. Considering adding small secondary LED brake/running light in case it happens again. **11/07 Update: Micro switch inside right control for activating brake lights has been sticking causing fault codes and sometimes keeping the ABS system from resetting. Replaced with new factory switch.
Comments:
This is one of the most beautiful bikes I have ever seen and the color suits it perfectly. Fantastic handling in any weather. Without all my touring crap on it, the lines are graceful and proportionate. The design is 8 years old and I've had it for over 3 yet it still gets comments every time I ride it. Most of the modifications listed above are easily removed. I use them on long trips but when I'm riding locally, I like the bike in it's more natural state. The Ram-Mounts allow me to pull everything off quickly and leave it looking as though nothing was ever there. This bike runs fantastic and the motor seems to get better with age. The shocks certainly could use some improvement. Initially, things got painful on very long rides but the mods above make a 500+ mile day far more tolerable. I have managed one 900 mile day. The one thing I wish this bike came with is a fuel gauge. I wouldn't mind a bigger tank too. I'd love to fit the modern gauges off the R1200S but I can make due with the old fashioned clocks it came with. I ride pretty aggressively, especially in the mountains and twisty back roads. No chicken strips on the last rear tire. The barbacks and peg lowering kit don't seem to affect handling hardly at all, even when I ride it hard. Although, I have scraped the toes of my boots more than a couple of times when I really lean it over... I prefer the look of the stock tall windscreen. The aftermarket ones are ugly but work well for cross-country rides. One thing I don't much care for on this bike is the wind noise. No matter which screen I try, it is just loud. The turbulence breaks right at shoulder level. One day I took it out without a screen on and it was hugely quieter. Good thing I have fantastic ear plugs.
